Fubara’s impeachment; Speaker orders C J to constitute seven man panel
By Magnus Chukwudi, Port Harcourt
The Rivers State House of Assembly, under the leadership of Speaker Martin Amaewhule, has formally directed the Chief Judge of the state to constitute a seven-man panel to investigate allegations of gross misconduct against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Prof. Ngozi Ordu.

Speaker Rt Hon Martin Amaewhule
The resolution was reached during plenary yesterday, following the adoption of a motion by lawmakers, who cited relevant provisions of the 1999 Constitution, empowering the legislature to commence impeachment proceedings against a sitting governor or deputy governor, where allegations of misconduct arise.
Lawmakers said the decision was guided by the principles of transparency, accountability and the rule of law, stressing that the move does not amount to a declaration of guilt but represents a procedural step to allow the allegations to be independently examined.
If constituted, the panel is expected to invite all parties involved, review evidence and submit its findings to the Assembly for further legislative action in line with constitutional requirements.
The development comes amid heightened political tensions in Rivers State, with political stakeholders and civil society organisations urging restraint and strict adherence to due process as the situation unfolds.
Earlier, the lawmakers addressed a live press conference in Port Harcourt, where they accused Governor Fubara of allegedly engaging in acts of blackmail and intimidation against the legislature.
Deputy Speaker, Dumle Maol, said the governor had lost the trust required to resolve the political crisis in the oil-rich state.
The lawmakers further accused the governor of infringing on provisions of the Constitution, insisting that the Assembly was left with no option, but to exercise its legislative powers, including impeachment, to safeguard democracy.
Four members of the Assembly who had earlier called for a political solution reportedly recanted their positions and declared support for the impeachment process.
As of the time of filing this report, Governor Fubara and his deputy had yet to issue official statements on the matter.
Reacting to the worrisome development, Mr Darlington Orji, Special Adviser to Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, alleged that members of the Rivers State House of Assembly received N350 million each for constituency projects, despite claims by some lawmakers that certain payments to them were not appropriated.
Orji made the allegation same yesterday, while appearing on Arise Television’s Morning Show, where he addressed questions surrounding the budget process and recent tensions between the executive and the legislature.
He also referred to a N100,000 payment made in December to civil servants as an end-of-year appreciation, noting that the same amount was extended to members of the House of Assembly, though some lawmakers reportedly rejected it on the grounds that it was not appropriated.
Orji questioned the rejection, arguing that the lawmakers had previously accepted N350 million each for constituency projects without raising concerns about appropriation.
He said: “You know that your platform is a very respected one, and I will not come here to tell lies. I will not say what I’m not sure of now. Because the Governor did not agree with them on that, so they didn’t come up with a presentation.
“You know that in preparing budget, there are too many things that will be improved that will make up the appropriation bill. And when they say the interest was not captured, and the man (Fubara) said, don’t worry, by December.
“So the specific amount I do not know as it stands today, because that presentation was not made because His Excellency, the governor, refused to accept that. But don’t forget, in December, there was N100,000 that was given to civil servants as a way of appreciating them and end of the package, it was also given to the members of Rivers. Some people rejected the money.
“They rejected it that it was not appropriated. You cannot build something of nothing now you rejected because N100,000 was not appropriated. Can you ask them, please, sir, the N350 million naira, that was given to each of them for their constituency projects, where did it come from? Why did they not reject it, since it was not appropriated?” ###

Fear grips Matawalle as moves to counter allegations against him leaked ……Accused of bribing USA officials to suppress report.
By Our Correspondent
Palpable fear of arrest and detention may have gripped Minister of State, Defence, Alhaji Bello Matawalle as a result of fresh controversy, which may spiral into a major scandal as a viral video released by the United States lawmaker, Kimberly Daniels has alleged that the minister attempted to bribe a U.S. official to change the report indicting him of complicity in Nigeria’s worsening insecurity.
In a statement, which has sent shockwaves across government circles in Abuja, Kimberly Daniels, who is the Chairwoman of the United World Congress of Diplomats (UN-WCD), claimed that Matawalle offered money to an elected U.S. official to help him stop the pressure on the Federal Government to remove or redeploy him from the Ministry of Defence.
Congress woman Daniels said the bribe was also intended to suppress a UN-WCD report, which focused on the ongoing genocide against Christians in Nigeria.
The report allegedly identified “red flags” and linked Matawalle to bandit groups during his tenure as Governor of Zamfara State. Civil society groups have defended the US Congress women’s report and have urged the government to implement the recommendations.
The Middle Belt, expecially Plateau, Kaduna, Kwara and Benue states have suffered several bandit and terrorist attacks and the devastating surge in violence in the region has resulted in the loss of hundreds of lives, including brutal massacres that were described as systematic religious cleansing.
The UN-WCD report argued that there is “troubling disconnect” between the Federal Government’s official statements and the reality on the ground, and she asserted that the attacks are “allegedly protected by leadership from the inside.”
The Presidency has not made a clear statement on the calls for Matawalle’s sack or his redeloyment since it started early this year but the controversy will likely not disappear from the public radar anytime soon especially as bandit and terrorist attacks continue in the north east, northwest and the middlebelt regions.

Re: Allegations Of Forgery,Conspiracy Against Prof. Augustine Akubue False,Baseless,Malicious
By Our Correspondent
State Chairman Elect, African Democratic Congress (ADC), Enugu State Chapter,Prof. Augustine Akubue, has described as false, baseless and malicious forgery allegation against his person by a group under the aegis of “Concerned ADC Stakeholders” in the state.
In a statement signed by by himself and made available to Journalists Prof Akubue said ” my attention has been drawn to a spurious publication by a group parading itself as “Concerned ADC Stakeholders” led by one Raphael Idoko, wherein they made unfounded allegations of forgery and conspiracy against my person.
“I categorically state that the said allegations are false, baseless, malicious, and a calculated attempt at political bullying by disgruntled elements who lost out in the recently concluded, free and fair ADC State Congress in Enugu State.
“For the record, there was indeed a civil matter arising from a property transaction at Trans-Ekulu, Enugu, which I lawfully bought through a legal practitioner. In the course of that transaction, an issue of alleged irregular signature arose and the matter was submitted to court for adjudication.
“Upon diligent inquiry and judicial review, it was established that there was no wrongdoing on my part. Consequently, parties voluntarily opted for an out-of-court settlement, and a Memorandum of Understanding was duly executed by all parties concerned.”
The statement further added,”Any subsequent attempt to impugn the authenticity of the said Memorandum of Understanding was appropriately discountenanced by a High Court of competent jurisdiction, which upheld the settlement. The certified records of the Memorandum of Understanding and the relevant judicial pronouncements are extant and available for verification, and they conclusively establish my innocence.
“Ordinarily, I would not dignify such mischief with a response. However, for the sake of the unsuspecting public and the integrity of our great party, it has become necessary to set the records straight: I, Prof. Augustine Akubue, have never been involved in any act of forgery or conspiracy.
“This contrived allegation is nothing but the handiwork of political detractors seeking to acquire power through the back door, having failed at the ballot during the Congress.
“I therefore advise Mr. Raphael Idoko and his co-travelers to desist from further acts of defamation and political brigandage, and to join hands with the duly elected leadership to build a strong, united, and victorious ADC in Enugu State.
“I remain committed to the rule of law, due process, and the democratic ideals upon which our party is founded.”
