By Our Correspondent

In a bid actualize his vowed ambition to contest 2027 President Presidential election,President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Tuesday opened the long awaited sale of nomination and expression of interest forms of the All Progressives Congress by picking the first forms to prepare grounds for his reelection i

The president bought the forms through a proxy, Federal House of Representatives member, representing Ikeja Federal Constituency, Chief James Faleke, who led a delegation of directors in the presidency to the Abuja Intercontinental Hotel (formerly Sheraton Hotels and Towers), where the event took place to purchase the nomination forms.

The documants were handed over to the delegation by the National Organising Secretary of the All Progressives Congress, Sulaiman Muhammad Argungu on Tuesday immediately the party commenced the sales to aspirants, who came from the 36 states of the federation to pick the documents for the 2027 elecrions.

Fielding questions from journalists shortly after picking the forms, Hon. James Faleke, expressed optimism on the chances of the reelection of President Bola Tinubu.

“My name is James Abiodun Faleke. I represent Ikeja Federal constituency. And by the grace of God, I am the representative of Mr. President in the House of Reps. So for all support groups who have made efforts, who have contributed money to purchase the form, I have done so on their behalf, on behalf of Nigerians.

“There is no one particular person that has done this. It is on behalf of all Nigerians.Just as we did pre-2023 election, I was also privileged with some leaders to buy the form. Here again, I am privileged to buy the form on behalf of all Nigerians, for our president, for our performing president and by the grace of God, 2027 will be a reality. By the grace of God, he will contest and he will win the election.

“At the same time, I am also privileged, with my friend here, Hon. Ajala, to pick the form for the incoming governor of Lagos, Dr. Kadiri Obafemi Hamza. And let me also say that those of us who contributed money to buy this form are like more than 1,000 in Lagos.

“It is not just one person. All of us cannot come here and pick the form. Only representatives are sent. And I am also lucky to be one of those who have been sent to pick the form. At the same time, I picked my own form to come back to the House of Reps and you can see the forms with me. So, I am lucky, and I am also waiting behind to get the receipt of our incumbent senator, Senator Idiat Adebule, that I will pick the form for her from my West Senetorial District. This is just to let you know that everything is intact and God is in charge.

“First, let me tell you that political parties can come together as part of democracy. When we do our work, they will do their work,” Faleke remarked.

The president is so far the only aspirant for the presidential election in the APC to have obtained the forms, which cost N100 million representing N30 million for Expression of Interest and N70 million for nomination forms.

Representatives of many other aspirants expecially those vying for governorship, the Senate and House of Representatives seats were seen at the venue and they purchased the two forms for their principals.

The exercise, which started on Saturday, April 25, 2026 will end on Saturday, May 2, 2026 and it is hoped that all aspirants would have picked up their forms because the APC has ruled out the possibility of extending the period for the sales of forms.

As Pamultation for 2027 election heats up,former presidential candidate of Labour Party (Pl), Mr Peter Obi and key South-East political leaders have intensified pre-2027 consultations, holding a strategic closed-door meeting with former President Goodluck Jonathan amid growing calls for opposition realignment.

On April 27, 2026 — The high-level engagement, held in Abuja, reportedly focused on Nigeria’s political direction and possible coalition-building ahead of the next general elections. Sources indicate that Obi was accompanied by prominent regional stakeholders, reinforcing the South-East’s push for greater influence in national politics.

Although details of the discussions were not publicly disclosed, the meeting has triggered speculation about a broader alliance capable of challenging the ruling party.

Analysts suggest the consultations may be part of a wider strategy to consolidate opposition strength and possibly present a unified presidential front.

In a related development, political figure Gbenga Hashim urged the labour movement and civil society groups to actively defend Nigeria’s democracy, warning that complacency could weaken democratic institutions ahead of 2027.

Together, these developments underscore intensifying political manoeuvres, as alliances, regional interests, and ideological blocs begin to reposition in what is shaping up to be a defining electoral contest

President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio has officially declared the Ondo South Senatorial seat vacant following Senator Jimoh Ibrahim’s appointment as Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, UN.

Ibrahim was last week accredited as Nigeria’s Permanent Representative in New York after presenting his Letter of Credence to UN Secretary‑General, António Guterres.

Announcing the vacancy during Tuesday’s plenary, Akpabio said it takes immediate effect in line with constitutional provisions.

He directed the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC to conduct a by‑election to fill the seat within the next 30 days.

Under the 1999 Constitution, as amended, the Senate is required to notify INEC of any vacancy in its membership to initiate a fresh election.

Senator Ibrahim, a businessman and politician, represented Ondo South Senatorial District on the platform of the All Progressives Congress, APC before his diplomatic appointment.

His presentation of the letter of credence marks the official start of Ibrahim’s duties as Nigeria’s Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary and Permanent Representative to the United Nations.

During the ceremony, Ibrahim conveyed President Bola Tinubu’s goodwill, commending Guterres for his leadership and commitment to the principles of the UN Charter at a critical moment in global affairs.

Highlighting Africa’s role within the UN system, Ibrahim said President Tinubu recognizes the continent’s contributions in supporting the Secretary‑General and the G77 plus China bloc during General Assembly deliberations.

He stressed that this backing reinforces the call for a permanent African seat on the UN Security Council, describing such a move as a historic milestone that would strengthen global peace and security, especially across Africa.

Nationalsecurity: Gov. Diri Okays Use Of Kinetic, Non-Kinetic Approaches For Tackling Insecurity. ‎ ‎Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, on Monday, said the adoption of both kinetic and non-kinetic approaches in the fight against banditry, kidnapping, insurgency and other forms of criminality will help in tackling insecurity rocking the country. ‎ ‎Governor Diri stated this during a courtesy visit of participants of the Executive Intelligence Management Course (EIMC) 19, of the National Institute for Security Studies (NISS) in Government House, Yenagoa. ‎ ‎The Bayelsa Chief Executive, who was represented by his Deputy, Dr. Peter Akpe, emphasised the need for complementation, stressing that no military strategy, however sophisticated, can substitute for inclusive governance and equitable distribution of resources that will give the citizenry a sense of belonging. ‎ ‎He informed that his administration was sustaining the prevailing peace in Bayelsa mainly through non-kinetic measures, such as prioritisation of youth employment, skills acquisition scholarships and as well as opening up rural communities with roads and bridges to engender socio-economic development. ‎ ‎Describing the theme of the NISS study tour, “Ethnic Militias and Resource Competition in Africa: Implications for National Security”, as apt, Governor Diri said that Bayelsa and the Niger Delta are most suitable environments to conduct such research activity. ‎ ‎He recalled that the Niger Delta agitations in the past were necessitated by decades of criminal neglect and marginalisation its people suffered despite the region’s huge contributions to the commonwealth of the Nigerian state. ‎ ‎Stressing the need for equitable resource sharing, Senator Diri pointed out that when ethnic communities felt alienated from resources on their own soil, there is the likely tendency for the affected people to resort to armed violence. ‎ ‎He commended the Director General and the entire leadership of the NISS for ‎consistently investing in the intellectual and professional capital of the nation’s security and intelligence architecture, expressing optimism that the team would work hard to actualize its study objectives to promote national security. ‎ ‎His words: ” We welcome you and also appreciate you for choosing Bayelsa for this particular study tour. These studies are so important; but most of the time, because we don’t study, we don’t get empirical data or information on what is really going on. And so, we tend to theorize everything. ‎ ‎”We take this study very seriously. Therefore, we commend the Director General and the entire leadership of the National Institute for Security Studies (NISS), Abuja, for your consistent investment in the intellectual and professional capital of our national intelligence and security architecture. ‎ ‎ ‎”Distinguished participants, your chosen theme — “Ethnic Militias and Resource Competition in Africa: Implications for National Security’ — could scarcely have found a more appropriate field laboratory than Bayelsa State, and indeed, the wider Niger Delta. ‎ ‎”Bayelsa is the heart of the Niger Delta. Beneath our creeks, our mangroves and our communities lie the wealth that has powered the Nigerian economy for over six decades. Yet, for so long, our people lived with the painful paradox of plenty gas flares lighting the night sky over our communities without electricity, pipelines crossing farmlands that no longer yielded crops, and a generation of young men and women growing up to watch wealth pass them by. ‎ ‎”On the issue of national security, I believe that no military strategy, however sophisticated, can substitute for inclusive governance, equitable resource sharing, and a credible social contract between the state and its citizens. ‎ ‎And so, in Bayelsa, the Prosperity Administration of His Excellency, Senator Douye Diri, has continued to use more of the non-kinetic approach by prioritizing youth empowerment, skills acquisition, scholarships and the opening up of our communities through critical infrastructure. ‎ ‎”Because we understand that an idle, hopeless and excluded young person is the most fertile recruiting ground any militia, anywhere in the world, can ever hope for. I respectfully urgently urge you to look closely at what has worked here in the Niger Delta, what has not and why.” ‎ ‎Earlier in her opening remarks, the NISS team lead, Mrs. Vivian Okpeh, said the Executive Intelligence Management Course (EIMC) 19 is a 10-month intensive training programme designed to equip participants with advanced skills in intelligence management, strategic leadership and national security policy formulation. ‎ ‎She further said that the study theme was carefully selected in recognition of the growing influence of militia groups, noting that their activities have profound implications for governance, economic stability and national development, which require a coordinated and well resourced response ‎ ‎While calling for greater collaboration between the NISS and Bayelsa, Mrs. Okpeh expressed readiness of the Institute to partner the state government in training the 2027 set of participants in the EIMC programme in Bayelsa. ‎ ‎
