LIFU JUDGMENT: APC Wants to Set Nigeria On Fire — Says Sokoto Rally Has Sent Ruling Party Into Panic

Published

By George Mgbeleke

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has described today’s judgment by Justice Peter Lifu of the Federal High Court, Abuja, purporting to sack the Senator David Mark-led leadership and invalidate the candidacy of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar as another desperate attempt to cripple the opposition and deny Nigerians the right to choose their leaders in the forthcoming general elections.

In a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the party said the timing of the judgment, barely 24 hours after the massive turnout at the ADC presidential campaign rally in Sokoto, exposes what it considers the growing desperation of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

“We have reasons to believe that the judgment had long been written on this case. The Sokoto rally was simply a trigger that stampeded its delivery. Yesterday, Nigerians came out in their hundreds of thousands to demonstrate their support for the ADC and our promise of making life affordable for them. Today, they are being told that the party that they support and the candidates that they have supported at all levels could be erased by the stroke of a reckless judicial pen.”

The ADC questioned whether those behind the flawed judgment had considered its far-reaching implications for the country, warning that the attempt to invalidate the party’s leadership could affect thousands of candidates contesting elections at the local, state and federal levels.

“Do these people understand what they are playing with? This is not about Atiku Abubakar or David Mark. It is about the democratic rights of Nigerians to freely choose their own leaders. It is about the rights of thousands of candidates to participate in a democratic process.”

The ADC maintained that the judgment is legally indefensible and would be challenged through every available judicial process.

“Our objection is particularly anchored on the subsisting judgment of Justice Musa Liman of the same Federal High Court, delivered on 2 July 2026 in Suit No. FHC/ABJ/CS/1637/2025, which affirmed the legitimacy of the David Mark-led NWC and directed INEC to recognise the leadership. It is a settled principle of Nigerian jurisprudence that a court of coordinate jurisdiction cannot sit on appeal over, review, vary or nullify the subsisting judgment of another court of equal jurisdiction.

“The ADC, therefore, rejects any consequential orders founded on a determination that appears to disregard these fundamental legal principles. However, we await the Certified True Copy (CTC) of the said judgment to ascertain its precise terms, scope and operative orders.

“We have seen this script before. When they are scared that the opposition is gathering steam, they use their judges in the courts to influence legally indefensible judgments. But the millions of Nigerians that are hungry and waiting for them at the ballot box see right through them and will not sit down in silence while our democracy is taken away by the courts.”

The ADC, therefore, warned the APC against pursuing what it described as a dangerous attempt to eliminate political competition through judicial controversies.

“We warn the APC: do not play with fires you cannot control. The peace and stability of Nigeria are bigger than the ambition of any president or political party. Nobody should be so desperate to retain power that they are prepared to put the entire country at risk. This is not the time to play silly games with the stability of this country.

“Nigeria belongs to Nigerians, not to the APC. The presidency is not an inheritance. If the President thinks he has performed well in office, why is he afraid of competition? If the APC thinks that its policies and candidates are popular, why don’t they subject themselves to free and fair elections?”

The ADC calls on the judiciary not to allow itself to be used in foisting a dictatorship on Nigeria.

“This is not just about the ADC or Atiku Abubakar; it is an ill wind that blows nobody any good.”

The party urged its members across the country to remain calm and law abiding while the party pursuers all legal means to address the situation.

Group Rejects Court’s Judgement Voiding Mark-Led ADC Exco , Atiku’s 2027 Presidential Race,Petition Int Community

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar

By Timothy Obasi, Abuja

Unhappy with the judgment by Justice Peter Lifu on the Sen.David Mark’s led National leadership of African Democratic Congress (ADC) and its Presidential Candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, Associates of the former vice president and presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress ADC Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, under the ageis of United Friends For Atiku ,, have petitioned the United Nation, UN, African Union, AU and the Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS over Court Judgement that voided David Mark led executives.

Making this declaration at a Press Conference in Abuja on Thursday, the group described the judgment by Justice Peter Lifu as unacceptable and a plot to destroy democracy in Nigeria and predetermine the outcome of the 2027 presidential election.

It called on the International Community to pay close attention to the developments unfolding in the democratic process in the country, urging the world body not to sit on the fence.

The Association warned the judiciary not to allow itself to be weaponized against the rule of Law and democracy in Nigeria

“Against this background, we demand the following:
To the Judiciary: Uphold your independence. Do not allow the courts to be used as a tool for political elimination.
We urge the Court of Appeal to accord any appeal arising from this judgment the utmost urgency.

“To INEC: Discharge your responsibilities strictly in accordance with the Constitution and finalised judicial decisions, immune from the political preferences of the incumbent.

“To the Incumbent and Political Actors: Cease the weaponisation of state institutions. True political stability comes from fair competition.

“We urgently call upon the United Nations (UN), the African Union (AU), ECOWAS, and our international democratic partners—including the United States, the United Kingdom, and the European Union—to pay close attention to the unfolding crisis in Nigeria. Do not wait for the total collapse of the democratic order before intervening. We urge you to hold the incumbent administration accountable to international democratic standards, scrutinise these judicial anomalies, and deploy necessary diplomatic pressure to ensure that Nigeria’s electoral process is not hijacked through institutional subterfuge.

“The stability of the West African sub-region hinges on the survival of Nigeria’s democracy.. We call on Nigerians to remain peaceful, vigilant, and committed to constitutional democracy. Disagreement must not become violence, and frustration must not become an excuse for lawlessness.

“However, let this serve as a definitive warning to those orchestrating this democratic heist: While we continually caution our supporters and the general public not to engage in the breakdown of law and order, the government must remember a fundamental truth of human nature. When a goat is pushed to the wall, it fights back, even against its owner.

“Do not push the Nigerian people to the wall. Do not test the limits of their patience by stealing their choices in the courtroom before they can reach the ballot box.

“Nigeria is bigger than any election, and democracy is bigger than any government. It does not belong to the Presidential Villa; it belongs to the Nigerian people.
Do not extinguish the alternatives and then expect the people to celebrate a hollow election.
Do not shrink the democratic space and mistake the people’s silence for consent.

“Let the courts interpret the law fairly. Let the institutions operate freely. Let political parties compete. Let the international community bear witness.
And, above all, let the Nigerian people decide”

Court nullifies David Mark-led ADC leadership, invalidates Atiku’s 2027 presidential ticket

ADC National Chairman/Former President of Senate ,Sen. David Mark

By Godwin Okafor,Abuja

Less than 70 days to the upcoming 2027 election the Federal High Court in Abuja has nullified the leadership of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) led by former Senate President David Mark.

It also invalidated all decisions taken by the party under the leadership, including the emergence of former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar as its presidential candidate for the 2027 general elections.

The court also voided the emergence of former Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, as the party’s National Secretary, as well as the appointments of other national officers and the nominations of candidates presented by the party for the 2027 elections.

Justice Peter Lifu, who delivered the judgment on Thursday, declared the Mark-led Caretaker Committee illegal, holding that the committee lacked the constitutional authority to assume control of the party and conduct its affairs.

The judgment followed a suit marked FHC/ABJ/CS/1819/2025, instituted by Nafiu Bala Gombe, a former Deputy National Chairman of the ADC (North-East), who challenged the process through which Mark and other members of the caretaker committee emerged as the party’s leadership.

Gombe had argued that following the resignation of the party’s former National Chairman, Ralph Nwosu, he was constitutionally entitled to assume the leadership of the party.

He consequently approached the court to challenge the legitimacy of the Mark-led leadership, seeking an order invalidating its decisions and restraining Mark and Aregbesola from parading themselves as the party’s National Chairman and National Secretary, respectively.

Upholding the plaintiff’s case, Justice Lifu held that the emergence of the Mark-led leadership contravened the provisions of the ADC constitution, the relevant provisions of the Electoral Act and the 1999 Constitution.

The court further directed that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) should not recognise or act on decisions reached at the party’s 99th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held on July 27, 2025.

The decision effectively invalidated the actions taken by the party under the leadership that emerged from the disputed process, including its preparations for the 2027 general elections.

Speaking after the judgment, Lukman Fagbemi (SAN), counsel to Gombe, said the ruling nullified all actions taken by the party since the disputed NEC meeting.

“All the actions taken by the ADC as a party since July 27 to date stand annulled,” Fagbemi said.

Another counsel to the plaintiff, Luka Musa Haruna (SAN), said the judgment had left the ADC without candidates for elective positions in the 2027 general elections.

According to him, the implication of the ruling extends beyond the party’s presidential ticket to its candidates for governorship, Senate, House of Representatives and State Houses of Assembly elections.

The judgment therefore places the party’s preparations for the 2027 elections in uncertainty, particularly the status of its presidential candidate, Atiku, and other candidates who had emerged through processes conducted under the now-invalidated leadership.

However, the ADC indicated that it would challenge the ruling at a higher court.

Nkemakolam Ukandu, the party’s National Welfare Secretary, who was joined in the suit as an interested party, said the party would appeal the judgment.

The ruling came barely 24 hours after Atiku, whose name had earlier been published by INEC as a presidential candidate, held a campaign rally in Sokoto State.

The development represents a major setback for the party’s preparations for the 2027 elections, as the court’s decision has thrown into question the legitimacy of its leadership structure and the validity of the decisions taken under the Mark-led caretaker committee.

Drug Abuse Fuels Cultism, Kidnapping In Edo, Says Okpebholo

Edo State governor ,Senator Monday Okpebholo (right) handing over plaque to NDLA Chairman, Brig.-Gen. Mohammed Marwa(left).

By Victor Joseph,Benin

In its determination to rid the state of criminality, Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has described drug abuse as a driver of cultism, kidnapping and other violent crimes, and promised his administration’s full support for the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in the fight against illicit drugs.

Drugs are totally our enemies, and we have to fight them as drug abuse remained a major concern for my administration because of its link to crime across the state.

The governor stated this on Wednesday at Government House, Benin City, when he received a delegation of the agency led by its Chairman/Chief Executive Officer, Brig.-Gen. Mohammed Marwa.

Okpebholo said the war on drug trafficking and substance abuse could not be won by government alone. According to him, security agencies and members of the public must play their part.

According to him, drug abuse remained a major concern for his administration because of its link to crime across the state.Adding that Drugs are totally our enemies, and we have to fight them,” the governor stated.

He recalled that Edo lost about 10 persons to cult-related killings shortly after he took office, adding that cultists rarely operate without taking drugs.

“Within a short time after I took over as governor, we lost about 10 persons to cult-related killings. These guys do not operate without drug intake,” he added.

The governor also said kidnappers often demand drugs as part of ransom, which, in his view, shows how deeply narcotics are tied to violent crime.

Okpebholo commended the NDLEA for its work in the state and thanked the agency for the officers and men posted to Edo as they have been doing actively well.

He assured the delegation of the state government’s cooperation. “We are ready to partner with you, we are ready to work with you, and we are ready also to support you in whatever request you make,” he added.

The governor thanked the team for the visit and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to working with the agency to curb drug abuse and trafficking and strengthen security across Edo.

Earlier, Marwa said the NDLEA was strengthening international partnerships to combat illicit drug trafficking.

He commended the state government for its support in the fight against drugs, as well as its backing for prevention programmes aimed at discouraging young people from substance abuse.

“Permit me to commend your developmental strides. You have achieved a lot within a short period of time,” Marwa said.

He described Edo as a gateway state and a cannabis-producing state, noting that this made the governor’s support all the more important.

“We appreciate your efforts against illicit drugs. Drugs are the root of all criminality. We appreciate your laudable steps and support to the NDLEA,” he said.

The highlight of the visit was Marwa’s announcement of Okpebholo as the NDLEA Grand Patron of the War Against Drug Abuse.
