By David Owei, Bayelsa
Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri has assured of collaboration with the media as partners and critical allies in his administration’s determination to entrench transparency, accountability, and openness in governance in Bayelsa.
Governor Diri gave this assurance on Monday in Government House, Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital when the Comrade Tonye Yemoleigha led Executive members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Bayelsa State Council, paid him a courtesy visit.
The Governor, while congratulating the newly elected Executive of the NUJ, acknowledged that Journalists are strong agents of democratic accountability in any society, promising that his Prosperity Administration will work hand in glove with them to strengthen good governance and deliver on components of his Prosperity promises.
He called on journalists to be objective in their reportage to foster development , peace and unity among the people; rather than negative reports with divisive tendencies.
The Bayelsa Chief Executive further directed the commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mrs Ebiwou koku-Obiyai to laise with the Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Surveyor Moses Teibowei, in order to give the NUJ Secretariat a facelift and also ensure that the issue of flooding in the premises is addressed.
Governor Douye Diri also assured of his support to the proposed Bayelsa Media Summit, the first by any State Council across the country.
Earlier, Chairman of Nigeria Union of Journalists, Bayelsa State Council, Comrade Tonye Yemoleigha promised that the NUJ will continue to collaborate with the state government and all critical stakeholders within the media space to project positive frames of reports that will sell the Bayelsa brand and attract investors and tourists to the State.
Comrade Yemoleigha insisted that media professionals have a central role in the progress and development of any society, while explaining that new NUJ leadership in Bayelsa State is repositioning it to be a frontline participant in State affairs in line with its obligation to society.
Comrade Yemoleigha commended the prosperity administration for the ongoing three Senatorial roads projects which he said will not only open up communities to socioeconomic transformation, but that they are central to tapping the enormous benefits of the Blue Economy surrounding Bayelsa State.
He noted that the newly constructed and rehabilitated roads have imbued serenity and beauty in the State capital, and prayed that the governor will continue to expand his urban renewal drive, while expressing optimism that the long awaited gas turbines will power the economy of Bayelsa State, adding that like every other Bayelsan, Journalists are anxiously looking forward to their arrival and installation.

Senator Yar’Adua dumps APC …says party derails from original ideals, selfish, corrupt

By Our Correspondent
Senator Abubakar Sadiq Yar’adua has formally resigned his membership of the All Progressives Congress ( APC ), citing the party’s departure from its founding ideals and describing the current administration as “selfish and stinkingly corrupt.”
In a strongly worded resignation letter addressed to his colleagues and the Nigerian public, Yar’adua, a founding member of both the defunct Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) and the APC, accused the ruling party of betraying the masses and abandoning its original mission of service to the people.
“I can not remain in a party or support a government that unashamedly watches its citizens being maimed, intimidated, sexually-harassed, assaulted, killed and displaced… while the government, its leadership and organs… remain aloof and unconcerned,” Yar’adua stated.
He further criticized the economic policies of the APC-led government, labeling them “destructive” and targeted at the “welfare, dignity, lands and livelihood” of Nigerians . He likened those in power to “urban bandits” and declared his intention to work with other like-minded individuals to democratically oust the current administration.
His exit marks a significant development in Katsina State politics and could trigger more defections, especially among disillusioned party loyalists.
Yar’adua concluded his statement with a call to action: “I, therefore, have no option other than to join hands with like-minds to democratically remove this bad, selfish and stinkingly corrupt administration.”
