Pope Francis to Leave Hospital, Begins Long Road to Recovery at Vatican

Catholic Pontiff, Pope Francis

Pope Francis will be discharged from Rome’s Gemelli hospital on Sunday and return to his Vatican residence, where he is set to undergo at least two months of recovery, doctors have confirmed.

The 88-year-old pontiff, who has been battling pneumonia since his admission on February 14, is expected to wave and offer a blessing from the hospital before departing for Saint Martha’s House, his official residence.

Dr. Sergio Alfieri, one of the pope’s physicians, emphasized that while his condition has improved, his recovery will continue at home.

“A hospital is actually the worst place for recovery due to the risk of further infections,” Alfieri said, explaining why the Vatican opted for home care.

Another doctor, Luca Carbone, reassured the public that the pope’s health was improving, adding: “We hope he will soon resume his normal activities.”
Speculation over a potential resignation has swirled given the length of Francis’ hospital stay—the longest of his papacy. However, Vatican Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, dismissed the idea outright.

“No, no, no, absolutely not,” Parolin stated when asked if the pope had considered stepping down.

Despite missing five consecutive Sunday Angelus prayers for the first time in his tenure, the Vatican remains optimistic about his gradual return to public duties.

As Catholics worldwide continue to pray for his recovery, well-wishers have left flowers, candles, and messages of support outside the Gemelli hospital.

With Easter approaching, the Vatican is expected to adjust its schedule to accommodate the pope’s convalescence while ensuring key religious events proceed smoothly.

Special Assistant to. Chairman/CEO of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria, NAHCON, Professor Abdullahi Saleh Usman, Ahmad Muazu

By Abdul-Ganiyy Akanbi

Ahead of the 2026 Hajj exercise, the Chairman/CEO of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria, NAHCON, Professor Abdullahi Saleh Usman, has inaugurated the Aviation Monitoring Committee to ensure quality outbound and inbound flights services.

Speaking at the ceremony held at the Hajj House headquarters of the NAHCON on Monday in Abuja, Usman charged the newly inaugurated committee members to function as diligent gatekeepers entrusted with the critical mandate of undertaking transparent and impartial monitoring of all aviation matters.

The chairman, according to a statement issued by his Technical Assistant (Media), Ahmad Muazu, urged the members to carry out their duties with the highest levels of integrity, patriotism, and professionalism, reminding them that the eyes of millions of Nigerian Muslims are upon them.

While expressing full confidence in the collective expertise of the committee members and tasked them to see their assignment as a sacred duty, he pointed out that the committee is a functional, non-decorative body, reflecting the commission’s zero-tolerance for failure and its core commitment to the pilgrims welfare.

“For the Nigerian government, under the visionary leadership of His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, facilitating this spiritual journey for its citizens is not just a statutory duty, it is a sacred trust. We are committed to ensuring that every Nigerian pilgrim performs their Ibadah in comfort and safety,” he pledged.

The chairman said while NAHCON has recorded steady improvements in airlift logistics, aviation remains the most sensitive and visible component of Hajj operations.

He said: “This committee is not a decorative body; it is our commitment to pilgrim welfare. You are the gatekeepers, entrusted with the responsibility of monitoring the aviation matters of our pilgrims.”

Earlier in his welcome address, the Commissioner of Operations and Licensing, Prince Anofiu Olanrewaju Elegushi, thanked the chairman for the confidence reposed in the committee and pledged the team’s total commitment to its mandate.

“Our mission is straightforward and solemn to guarantee safe, secure, and dignified air transport for pilgrims. We will not compromise the safety of Nigerian pilgrims,” he assured.

Pilgrims praying at mecca

Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, KSA, has unveiled comprehensive health requirements and guidelines for all intending pilgrims across the world planning to perform the 2026 (1447 AH) Hajj in the holy land.

A circular by the authorities of the KSA and made available to journalists by the Deputy Director of Information and Public Relations in the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria, NAHCON, Fatima Sanda Usara, outlines both mandatory and recommended medical conditions that must be met prior to undertaking the pilgrimage.

According to the circular, all countries, including Nigeria, are to ensure that their citizens performing Hajj are physically fit and free from ailments that could affect their health or that of others during the pilgrimage.

The Saudi Ministry of Health listed severe heart, lung, or kidney diseases, advanced chronic illnesses, and mental or psychological disorders as conditions that may prevent an individual from performing Hajj.

It mandates full compliance with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Health medical fitness requirements for attending Hajj, including a certificate from medical authorities of the pilgrims’ countries confirming that they are free of conditions like major organ failure (heart, lungs, liver, or kidneys); neurological or psychiatric disorders that impair cognition or are accompanied by severe motor disabilities; senility accompanied by dementia; high-risk pregnancy at any stage; cancer patients receiving chemotherapy, biological, or radiological treatment; and active infectious diseases with a public health impact such as tuberculosis and hemorrhagic fever.

On vaccination, the Saudi health authorities reiterated that all intending pilgrims must present valid certificates of vaccination against COVID-19, meningitis, polio, and yellow fever before entering the Kingdom.

To ensure effectiveness of the guidelines, Saudi authorities will conduct health screenings at all entry points to ensure compliance with the set requirements while any traveler who fails to meet these health standards may be denied entry, isolated, or subjected to further medical evaluation.

The Saudi Ministry of Hajj and Umrah emphasized that “no pilgrim suffering from the listed diseases will be allowed to travel, and health certificates will be thoroughly verified before and upon arrival in the Kingdom.”

It also disclosed that additional measures may be taken if there are global disease outbreaks or international public health emergencies during or prior to the Hajj exercise, in coordination with the World Health Organization, WHO.

The NAHCON, has therefore, urged all intending pilgrims to take note of these requirements and ensure they complete the necessary vaccinations and health checks well ahead of the 2026 Hajj season.

The commission restated its commitment to work with the State Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Boards and Licensed Tour Operators to enforce compliance as provided to avoid travel disruptions at the point of entry into the Kingdom for Hajj.

HURIWA Blasts Onanuga as Tribal Bigot, Declares Support for Sowore’s Protest*

IPOB leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu
By George Mgbeleke
The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has slammed President Bola Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, describing him as a “tribal bigot” whose utterances are not only divisive but dangerous to Nigeria’s fragile unity.
The Association said Onanuga’s recent statement that detained IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu, “will get what he deserves” is a clear reflection of the dysfunction and double standards that have long defined Nigeria’s justice system, where individuals from certain ethnic backgrounds are persecuted for dissent while others are rewarded for incitement.
In a statement made available to journalists on Friday, HURIWA said Onanuga, who openly threatened the Igbo people during the 2023 general elections, ought to be in the DSS underground cell instead of occupying a powerful seat in Aso Rock.
“Bayo Onanuga is the one who deserves to be in DSS custody, not Nnamdi Kanu,” HURIWA declared. “In 2023, he incited ethnic hatred when he warned Igbos to stay out of Lagos politics. He said, ‘Let 2023 be the last time of Igbo interference in Lagos politics.’ That was hate speech at its worst; a direct assault on the Igbo nationality. Yet, he roams free and enjoys presidential privileges.”
The rights group said Onanuga’s comments are not just an attack on Kanu but an affront to the entire Igbo-speaking population of Nigeria, adding that Kanu’s agitation represents the cry of a people who have long suffered systemic marginalization and exclusion.
“Nnamdi Kanu’s message, though sometimes delivered in strong language, was rooted in the call for equity and justice for the Igbo race. Anyone who denies that the Igbo people are systematically marginalized in modern-day Nigeria is either dishonest or an outcast among his people,” the association said.
HURIWA noted that Onanuga’s renewed attack on rights activist Omoyele Sowore and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar for supporting Kanu’s release was both hypocritical and arrogant. “It is ironic that Onanuga accused Atiku of commenting on a case before the court while he himself is making inflammatory pronouncements on the same issue,” the group said.
“Onanuga is not the Chief Justice of Nigeria. He has no right to sit in Aso Rock and pass judgment on Kanu. What gives him the moral or legal authority to pre-judge a matter in court while pretending to caution others?” HURIWA queried.
The Association announced that it would join and fully support the peaceful protest being organised by Omoyele Sowore to demand Nnamdi Kanu’s release, saying the time has come for Nigerians, especially the Igbo people, to rise against selective justice.
“Let the heavens fall, we will come out. Enough is enough. Every right-thinking Igbo person should join this protest. We cannot continue to be intimidated by people like Bayo Onanuga who should be behind bars for hate speech and ethnic incitement,” HURIWA said.
The group recalled that Onanuga’s ethnic tirade in 2023 was not an isolated incident, pointing to similar threats made by the Lagos transport union leader,, Musiliu Akinsanya, popularly known as MC Oluomo, who warned non-Yoruba voters to stay away from polling units unless they were voting for the APC.
“MC Oluomo said, ‘If you no wan vote for APC, stay at home o!’; a clear call for voter suppression and ethnic violence,” HURIWA recalled. “That reckless statement was followed by brutal attacks in Lagos, including the case of Mrs. Idowu Owohunwa, who was stabbed and bloodied while trying to vote. Yet, no one was arrested or prosecuted.”
HURIWA argued that Onanuga, MC Oluomo, and others like them who made hate-filled comments before and during the 2023 elections are “far guiltier” than Nnamdi Kanu, whose words from abroad never directly led to election-day killings or assaults.
“The truth is that Onanuga and MC Oluomo are the real symbols of hate speech in Nigeria. They are worse than Nnamdi Kanu because their words caused bloodshed, while Kanu’s words were calls for justice,” HURIWA said.
The rights organisation condemned the apparent ethnic imbalance in the country’s justice system, where anti-Igbo bigots walk free and even hold federal appointments while the leader of a movement calling for equality is treated as a felon.
“If Nnamdi Kanu were a Yoruba man, he would not have been held for this long. The Nigerian justice system is skewed, weaponised, and openly biased against the Igbo people,” HURIWA said.
The Association called on the Department of State Services (DSS) and the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) to immediately investigate Onanuga for incitement and ethnic hate speech, stressing that his conduct poses a real threat to Nigeria’s unity.
“The government cannot continue to protect people like Onanuga who are capable of setting this country on fire. Before Tinubu rewarded him with an appointment, Onanuga made a statement worse than what Nnamdi Kanu ever said. Yet, he is in Aso Rock while Kanu is in chains. That is not justice,” HURIWA concluded.
