Gen.Gowon’s reason for Nigeria, Biafra war provocative, baseless – IPOB insists

Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Monday, vehemently condemned the recent statement credited to former Nigerian Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, describing his remarks as a provocative, insensitive, and shameless attempt to whitewash the atrocities of the Biafran genocide he orchestrated.
In a statement made available to newsmen on Monday IPOB’s spokesperson, Emma Powerful said that, “His claim that the Nigerian Civil War was fought for “unity, not hatred” is not only a grotesque distortion of history but a deliberate insult to the millions of Biafrans slaughtered under his command and an affront to all victims of his premeditated genocidal campaign.
“Gowon’s crocodile tears over the violence in Jos and his hollow lamentations about Nigeria’s disunity cannot erase the bloodstains on his hands. His words are a painful reminder of the unrepentant arrogance of a man who presided over the massacre of over 5 million Biafrans, men, women, and children whose only crime was seeking self-determination in the face of systemic marginalization and state-sponsored pogroms.
“To compare his genocidal war to a quest for unity is to spit on the graves of our ancestors and mock the suffering of survivors. Gowon’s legacy is not one of unity but of unparalleled brutality, second only to Adolf Hitler’s slaughter of 6 million Jews.
“We demand that Gowon answer the following questions, which he has dodged for decades: What happened at Aburi? Why did you renege on the agreements reached with Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, which could have averted the war? Why did you repeatedly seek guidance from a certain diplomat during those negotiations, betraying Nigeria’s sovereignty to neo-colonial interests?
“Why did you perpetuate the falsehood that the January 1966 coup was an “Igbo plot” when evidence clearly shows it was a military action by officers from across Nigeria? Why did you refuse to return Nigeria to regionalism, a system that fostered unprecedented economic growth, in favor of a unitary structure designed to exploit Biafra’s oil and gas resources?
“What transpired during the late Sir Ahmadu Bello’s visit to Sandhurst, where he addressed Nigerian cadets in Hausa, sowing seeds of division? As a self-proclaimed “born-again Christian,” why have you refused to publish your account of the Aburi Accord? What truth are you afraid to reveal to posterity?”
According to IPOB Gowon’s periodic speeches are not calls for healing but deliberate provocations that reopen old wounds and his refusal to acknowledge the truth about the Biafran genocide, starvation policies, mass executions, and aerial bombardments of civilian populations demonstrates his lack of remorse.
“Unity cannot be imposed by force, nor can it thrive in a contraption like Nigeria, an artificial creation designed by colonial masters to exploit indigenous ethnic nationalities. The diverse cultures and worldviews of Nigeria’s peoples are irreconcilable under a forced union that prioritizes the interests of a few over the aspirations of many,” IPOB stated further.
“To Gowon and his ilkes, we say: Your generation failed to build a foundation for meaningful development or coexistence. Your actions sowed the seeds of discord that Nigeria reaps today. Spare us your sanctimonious rhetoric about unity. The blood of 5 million Biafrans cries out for justice, and no amount of media posturing can silence their voices. If you seek peaceful coexistence, let your actions, not empty words, prove it. Begin by telling the world how you sleep at night after superintending one of history’s worst atrocities.
“IPOB remains resolute in our pursuit of self-determination for Biafra. We call on all Biafrans, both at home and in the diaspora, to reject Gowon’s revisionist narrative and unite in our quest for freedom. Nigeria’s unity is a myth, sustained by coercion and exploitation. The time for truth, justice, and liberation is now,” the movement stated.

Governor Adeleke is not Joining ADC Nor Aligning with Anyone in ADC- Spokesperson

By David Owei, Bayelsa
Governor Ademola Adeleke is not defecting to African Democratic Congress (ADC) nor aligning with anybody within the ADC ahead of the 2026 state elections, his Spokesperson, Mallam Olawale Rasheed has disclosed.
Responding to media publication and enquiries, the Spokesperson affirmed that Governor Adeleke remains in Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and is going to win, with wide margins, the 2026 governorship elections on the platform of the PDP.
The statement reads further: “Our attention has been drawn to news reports and media enquiries about the imminent defection of Governor Adeleke to the ADC or alignment with ADC big wigs ahead of the 2026 governorship race. There is no truth in those publications and speculations.
“First of all, we, the PDP Osun, have already adopted and endorsed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the 2027 presidential election, so there is no alliance with ADC.
“Secondly, Governor Adeleke has no alliance with anyone in ADC. He remains in PDP, will run in PDP, and needs no alliance with ADC to win with a wide margin in 2026.
“The Osun electorate supports Governor Adeleke because of his impressive performance since he came to office. That good work is still ongoing and Osun people are committed to sustaining the delivery of good governance by re-electing Governor Adeleke in 2026”, the Spokesperson was quoted as saying.
Governor Adeleke urges PDP members to forge ahead with the ongoing strengthening of the party structures across all levels to prepare for fresh victory next year”, the statement from the Spokesperson concluded.

By David Owei,Bayelsa
The umbrella body of Ijaw Elders, the Ijaw National Congress (INC) has rejected the Bill in the Senate seeking to permanently elevate the Ooni of Ife and Sultan of Sokoto as the exclusive Co-chairmen of the Traditional Rulers Council.
The INC said the move would be at the expense of apex traditional rulers from other ethnic nationalities and geopolitical divides.
The Second Vice Chairman of the Ijaw National Congress (INC), Chief Alabo Nengi James (OON) said, in a statement on Sunday in Odi, Kolokuma/Opokuma Local Government area of Bayelsa State, the proposal is a continuos infringement on Traditional Rulers in Nigeria.
Alabo Nengi James describes the provision of the Bill as unacceptable and against the Rights of the indigenous People across tribes, Religion, Culture and Customs.
He said the Bill should be reviewed to include clauses such as No permanent Chairmanship for Sultan and Oni only must be allowed in the ongoing bill being discussed in the Senate.
He advocates that the National Assembly should allow the National Council of Traditional Rulers to Appoint their Leadership themselves, rotationaly and based on Federal Character.
“Include the Role of Traditional Rulers into the Constitutio and No Traditional Ruler from another tribe or religion is superior to another.”
“The National Assembly should Step down the Provocative and dehumanizing offensive Bill that will cause a serious rift and breach of peace in Nigeria.”
Chief James called the attention of the Senate President, Rt. Hon. Godswill Akpabio, urging him to immediately step down what he termed a “highly insensitive and dangerous bill.”
He emphasized that traditional rulers across the country must be given equal recognition and should be allowed to choose their national leadership through internal mechanisms that reflect rotational leadership and the federal character system.
