Democracy Day outburst: “Ex-Bayelsa Reps slams  Dickson for questioning democratic credentials of Tinubu

Rt. Hon. Isreal Sunny Goli

By David Owei, Bayelsa

Former Member of the Federal House of Representative from Bayelsa State, Rt. Hon. Isreal Sunny Goli has tackled the former Governor of the State and Senator representing Bayelsa West Senatorial district, Senator Seriake Dickson over his democracy outburst questioning the democratic credentials of President Bola Tinubu.

Rt. Hon. Sunny Goli, who is also a traditional ruler in Brass Kingdom, HRH Kemmer V Amadabo of Kemmer-Ama, in a statement titled “The Hypocrisy of Henry Seriake Dickson – A Supposed Democrat with an Undemocratic Legacy ” , declared that Dickson’s on criticism of President Tinubu’s interventions in Rivers State rings hollow, considering his own troubling legacy in Bayelsa State during his 8years rule as Governor.

Rt. Hon. Sunny-Goli noted that he was shocked and astonished when he read the outburst of Senator Dickson during the democracy day questioning the democratic credentials of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu,”
while Dickson’s tenure as governor was marked by a blatant disregard for democratic principles, earning him a reputation as one of the most undemocratic leaders in the history of Bayelsa State.”

” His administration institutionalized oppression, stifled opposition voices, and exhibited an unparalleled aversion to democratic norms. Dickson’s government made political persecution a state policy, targeting opposition figures through fabricated allegations.”

Rt. Hon. Isreal Sunny Goli also recalled the harrowing experience of the present Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Dr. Samuel Ogbuku and himself had under the Gov. Seriake Dickson administration in Bayelsa.

Sunny-Goli stated that Ogbuku and himself were falsely accused of murder and extrajudicially targeted for killing or imprisonment. While he escaped being arrested, Ogbuku was not lucky as he was indiscriminately put in prison custody for months.

“Dickson falsely accused myself and Samuel Ogbuku of murder, weaponizing state machinery to crush dissent. The systematic suppression of opposing voices defined his leadership, ensuring that political rivals were either side-lined or silenced.”

“Following the unceremonious end of the administration in which I served as the Special Adviser on Youths to then-Governor Timipre Sylva in 2012, Dickson outrightly withheld my severance payment, along with those of other appointees who served under that administration.”

“His refusal was based solely on our decision to remain loyal to our principal rather than align with him. Only those who crossed over to his camp received their severance benefits. To this day, those of us who stood firm have yet to receive the severance payments rightfully owed to us.”

“In 2015, while serving as a member of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly representing Brass Constituency 1, I faced an unjust denial of my constitutional entitlements as directed by Dickson.”

” He actively sought to frustrate my tenure, ensuring I was excluded from official functions, including foreign travel opportunities with my colleagues and denied me my constituency projects.”

“Upon completing my tenure in the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, I had no option but to seek justice through the Code of Conduct Bureau. My petition prompted an investigation that uncovered the unjust treatment I had experienced at the hands of the then Speaker, Konbowei Benson (who is now a Senator representing Bayelsa Central).

” He acknowledged that I was owed certain entitlements, following directives from Dickson. It was due to my involvement of the Code of Conduct Bureau that i was eventually paid all that i was owed.”

He also pointed out the alleged penchant dislike of Senator Seriake Dickson for members of the opposition party and the All Progressive Congress (APC), “Dickson’s aversion to democratic governance was further highlighted in his public declaration that he did not recognize any of the lawmakers from the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) as well as those from other political parties.”

“Though the opposition legislators were duly elected, he brazenly asserted that only representatives from his party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), deserved recognition.”

He also accused the Former Bayelsa Governor of dividing the State along ethnic line in order to score cheap political advantage and disrespect existing rotation agreement reached over the years among political leaders in Local Government areas and Senatorial districts.

According to him,”Beyond his suppression of opposition, Dickson polarized Bayelsa along ethnic lines by introducing the dangerous concept of “core Ijaw” versus “non-core Ijaw” politics. In a state meant to be unified under a common identity, he strategically manipulated ethnic sentiments to serve his personal agenda.”

“Ironically, a man known for silencing dissent and consolidating power now seeks to portray himself as a defender of democracy.”

On the Rivers crisis, Rt. Hon. Isreal Sunny-Goli commended President Bola Tinubu for his quick and practical intervention, describing the President as a steadfast advocate for constitutional governance, ” He has demonstrated exemplary leadership, particularly in his intervention in the Rivers State crisis.”

“Even Governor Siminalayi Fubara, the key figure in the conflict, has expressed appreciation for the President’s decisive action. Yet, Dickson appears determined to insert himself unnecessarily into the discourse.”

“If Dickson were truly a Democrat, he would honour the mutual understanding in Bayelsa West Senatorial District, which mandates the rotation of the Senate seat between Ekeremor and Sagbama. ”

“Instead, he continues to prioritize his personal ambition over the collective will of the people. He should borrow a leaf from the people of Bayelsa East Senatorial District, who have steadfastly upheld their rotational arrangement.”

” This system was designed to ensure an equitable distribution of representative opportunities among the local government areas within the district.”

“Dickson’s history of authoritarianism extends beyond his governorship. His attempts to manipulate senatorial representation, suppress opposition voices, and flout constitutional processes are clear indicators of his undemocratic nature.”

” His criticism of President Tinubu’s interventions in Rivers State rings hollow, considering his own troubling legacy.”

“The people of Bayelsa State and Nigerians at large must not be deceived by Dickson’s revisionist narrative. His tenure was defined by oppression, manipulation, and suppression, values antithetical to democracy.”

“Leadership is judged by actions, not empty rhetoric, and the truth about Dickson’s undemocratic legacy must not be ignored.”

FLOOD CONTROL: Bayelsa Deputy Gov. Urges Residents To Complement Govt’s Efforts

FLOOD CONTROL: Bayelsa Deputy Governor Urges Residents To Complement Govt’s Efforts. Following the flood alert issued by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency, the Bayelsa State Deputy Governor, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, has urged residents of the state not to panic but rather cooperate with government in taking proactive measures to mitigate the effects of flooding. Senator Ewhrudjakpo made the call on Tuesday during a meeting with the Ministry of Environment, the State Flood Control Directorate, the Environmental Sanitation Authority, Chairmen of local government areas and rural development authorities at his office in Government House, Yenagoa. The Deputy Governor, in a statement issued by his Senior Special Assistant on Media, Mr Doubara Atasi, assured that there would be less impact of flooding in the state because of the steps government is taking to address the menace. He, however, urged the ministries of environment and information, the Flood Control Directorate and other relevant agencies not to rest on their oars but rather intensify efforts including embarking on sensitization campaigns on proper refuse disposal and clearing of blocked drainages. Senator Ewhrudjakpo equally charged the flood control directorate to extend their operations to areas that are heavily impacted every year such as Biseni and Tombia in Yenagoa Local Government Area and Obirigbene in Ekeremor LGA. He equally directed all relevant MDAs to work together to ensure that identified higher grounds in flood prone communities are sand-filled and made habitable in the event of any devastating flooding. His words: “The Commissioner for Information, Strategy and Orientation, Environmental Sanitation Authority and Flood Control Directorate should carry out sensitization programmes on the impending flood. “They should also enlighten our people in rural areas using town criers because we really need to adequately inform our people on the need to stay safe. The Directorate should not pay attention to Yenagoa, the state capital alone. “There is need to identify higher grounds in places that are flood prone like Biseni and Obrigbene communities so that flood victims could relocate there for safety”. In his remarks, the Commissioner for Environment, Hon Ben Ololo, said in the last couple of weeks, his ministry and the Flood Directorate Control made collaborative efforts in clearing drainages and canals. According to him, more funding and machinery will be required to open up more drainages to reduce the impact of the natural disaster of flooding and erosion. In their separate contributions, the Director General, Bayelsa State Flood and Erosion Control Directorate, Chief Omuso Wilson Omuso and the Mayor Of Yenagoa City, Mr Bulodisiye Ndiwari, confirmed that the people of Biseni had donated about 15 hectares of land for government to develop as a relief camp for flood victims.

Borno South 2027: Askira gains support as calls for power rotation challenge Ndume

Abdullahi Musa Askira

By Abdul-Ganiyy Akanbi

Stakeholders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Borno State have endorsed the Deputy Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Abdullahi Musa Askira, for the Borno South Senatorial District seat ahead of the 2027 general elections, setting the stage for a potential political contest with incumbent Senator Mohammed Ali Ndume.

The endorsement followed a series of consultations across the nine local government areas in the district, amid growing calls for power rotation and equitable representation within the zone.

Speaking on behalf of the stakeholders, a prominent political figure in the area, Sule Gambo, said the move was driven by the need to restore a long-standing zoning arrangement that had been overlooked.

“It was we, the people of Askira/Uba, who initiated this arrangement. We agreed that the seat should shift to Gwoza to give them a sense of belonging,” Gambo stated.

He, however, lamented that the rotation principle had not been sustained after the tenure of the late Senator Mohammed Mahdi.

“The senatorial seat is supposed to rotate among Chibok, Damboa, Gwoza, and Askira/Uba. Unfortunately, this has not been the case for a long time,” he added.

Stakeholders described Askira’s emergence as a strategic step toward restoring political balance in the district, urging party members to unite behind his candidacy.

“By the will of God, the time has come for Askira/Uba. One of our illustrious sons, Engineer Abdullahi Askira, has shown interest, and we want to ensure the principle of rotation is upheld,” Gambo said.

Adding a gender perspective, a women leader in the area, Tafu Malla, commended Askira’s grassroots engagement and empowerment initiatives, particularly among youths and women.

“He maintains a genuine open-door policy and is always there for the poor,” she said, noting that many women have benefitted from his employment and empowerment programmes.

Also speaking, a retired Permanent Secretary and former Special Adviser from Chibok, Hawa Mai-Musa, stressed the importance of fairness in political representation.

“To be fair to the people of Chibok and Askira/Uba, it is time for a rotation. Engineer Askira is a proven leader whose track record shows he has been tested,” she said.

Highlighting the role of women in elections, she added, “Women carry the bulk of the votes in Borno—at least 70 per cent. If we stand with him, he will surely succeed.”

From the Uba Emirate, Adamu Jafiya emphasized the need for development-focused representation, noting that the district requires leadership capable of attracting federal presence.

“While others are bringing federal projects to their zones, we are busy with political wars. We need Engr. Askira to bring his professional and legislative experience to the Senate,” he said.

The agitation for the proposed “Savannah State” has also emerged as a key campaign issue, with supporters noting that Askira’s advocacy has strengthened his political profile within the district.

However, political analysts say the influence of Senator Mohammed Ali Ndume remains significant, given his long-standing presence in the National Assembly and deep-rooted political network.

Despite this, the coordinated endorsement of Askira signals a growing momentum within the APC to reshape the political dynamics of Borno South ahead of the 2027 elections.

For now, the Deputy Speaker is yet to make a formal declaration, as his camp awaits further direction from the party leadership.

HURIWA Questions Political Accountability -Says Unresolved Corruption Allegations should Bar Public Office Aspirants

Published

By George Mgbeleke

The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has expressed deep concern over what it described as the troubling culture of political recycling of individuals facing serious allegations of financial misconduct, warning that such practices undermine public confidence in governance and the anti-corruption campaign.

The group recalled the controversial remark attributed to former Edo State Governor, Adams Oshiomhole, that “once you join the APC, your sins are forgiven,” describing it as symbolic of growing public suspicion regarding political accountability within the ruling All Progressives Congress (All Progressives Congress).

HURIWA questioned whether the APC has become “a haven for suspected thieves of public funds,” stressing that such perceptions—whether fair or not—pose a serious reputational risk to Nigeria’s democratic institutions and anti-corruption efforts.

The association specifically raised concerns over the political trajectory of former Delta State Governor, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, noting that his emergence in ongoing political realignments comes amid lingering allegations being investigated by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

According to the group, the use of an entire state political structure as a bargaining tool in political negotiations further raises questions about the ethical foundations of such realignments and the sincerity of Nigeria’s commitment to accountability in public life.

HURIWA maintained that the central objective of its position is to establish the principle that individuals facing unresolved allegations of serious financial impropriety should not be considered fit to contest any elective office until they have fully cleared their names of such accusations, including those relating to alleged mismanagement or diversion of public funds.

It stressed that allowing individuals under such a cloud of suspicion to freely recycle into elective positions without resolution of their cases risks weakening public trust and sending the wrong signal about consequences for alleged abuse of office.

However, the organisation clarified that its position does not amount to a declaration of guilt against any individual, but rather a principled call for due process, transparency, and institutional integrity.

The statement was issued by the National Coordinator of HURIWA, Comrade Emmanuel Nnadozie Onwubiko, who reiterated that no political party affiliation should be interpreted as immunity from scrutiny or investigation.

He urged anti-corruption agencies to remain firm, impartial, and consistent in the discharge of their constitutional responsibilities, warning that selective accountability would further erode public confidence in Nigeria’s democratic system.
