National Pilgrimage: Propagate Devotion to Our Lady of Mount Carmel in your Dioceses-Fr Udom Tells Bishops …..Says only prayers can deliver Nigeria from food insecurity

Published

on

By Ignatius Okorocha

Rev. Fr Cyril Udom (OCD), National Promoter of devotion to Our Lady of Mount Carmel and Brown Scapular has urged Catholic Bishops to promote devotion to Our Lady of Mount Carmel in their dioceses and parishes given the powerful roles our blessed Virgin plays in the life of her children during difficult times such as our country is experiencing now.

This is  even as he has appealed to Christians to intensify  efforts in praying to God through our lady of Mount Carmel for God’s intervention in the present situation Nigeria finds itself.
Recall that the Carmelite Order in Nigeria organized a three days  National Pilgrimage in honour of our Lady of Mount Carmel at her Shrine located at Mount Tabor at Onuiyi in Nsukka  Enugu state, where our lady’s devotees drawn from different parts of the country devoted time to pray and refected  on the life of our Blessed Virgin Mary and her son Jesus Christ.
The climax of the event was  the celebration of the feast of our Lady of Mount Carmel on July, 16 2024 with the concelebration of Holy Mass by the Carmelite priests led by their Vicar, camelite Sisters, members of the Secular Order of Mount Carmel (OCDS) and many other Marian devotees.
Speaking on the importance of the National Pilgrimage in honour of Mount Carmel, National Promoter of our Lady of Mount Carmel and Scapular wearers, Rev Fr Cyril Udom (OCD) said,”First and foremost, the Carmelite Order has a tradition of going to holy places of Carmel Order to conduct some spiritual l activities in honour of our Lady of Mount Carmel. Here in Nigeria, as soon as we built the Shrine of our Lady of Mount Carmel, we started organizing Pilgrimages every year. Since 2019 that we came here on a Pilgrimage, we have been coming here on a Pilgrimage  to the  sanctuary of our  Lady of Mount Carmel to honour her and carry out devotional activities as a way of asking her who is our Mother and our Queen to intervene
On why other parishes are not participating in the Pilgrimage , he said,’ “the annual Carmelite Pilgrimage first and foremost is organized for all the devotees of Our Lady of Mount Carmel and Brown Scapular wearers.
” So, we invited all the wearers of the Scapular and different groups and societies in the church that use the Scapular to come and be part of this Pilgrimage and indeed many of them have come.
The Carmelite Fraiers are here, the Carmelite sisters are here, the Secular Carmelite are equally here (and I know you belong to that group), members of Confraternity of our Lady of Carmel are here. Our brothers and sisters from different Carmelite communities in Nigeria are here. The  societies that wear Scapular are here.
“But you know that in  Nigeria, we have not established the presence of  Our Lady of Mount Carmel  Confraternity in some dioceses. This is why the   devotion has not reached all parts of Nigeria. In the future we hope to continue to spread the promotion of Our Lady of Mount Carmel to make sure that all parts of Nigeria have the privilege of enjoying the devotion to Our Lady of Mount Carmel and enjoy the blessings and privileges that come with this devotion.”
On the need for Catholic Bishops of Nigeria to embrace this annual Pilgrimage to Our Lady of Mount Carmel in their dioceses, he said, “actually some Bishops in Nigeria know about the National Pilgrimage to Our Lady of Mount Carmel because the first thing that I do before getting into any diocese before the commencement of the devotion is to go and greet the Bishop to explain the devotion to our lady of Mount Carmel and ask the Bishop’s permission to propagate the devotion there and I tell you,all the Bishop I have met have previously given me the permission to come and establish there and to propagate the devotion there.”
On his advice to Catholics regarding the National Pilgrimage he said,” I urge Catholics in Nigeria to embrace the devotion to the blessed Virgin Mary because the Scapular is the garment of the blessed Virgin Mary. When these people are sincerely devoted their lives  to the Blessed Virgin, they will see the need to carry out some activities in her honour and one of the activities we can carry out in the honour of the blessed Virgin Mary, is to attend a Pilgrimage like we have here in Nsukka.”
On how to combat the present difficult times in Nigeria he said,” my advise to Nigerians is to turn to God in prayers in difficult times and not only in difficult times but also in good times because God has a way of blessing and encouraging us in all circumstances of our lives and of course, the blessed Virgin Mary passed through turbulent moments in her life, giving birth to Jesus Christ, taking care of Jesus and at  the end,  her son was killed and she endured it because of God who invited her to be the mother of God and for the sake of our salvation.
“So, in this difficult moment, we should look at this time with the point of view of salvation sharing in the suffering of Christ as the blessed Virgin Mary did,” he noted.
On his latest book that was
launched, during the Pilgrimage Fr Udom
said,”‘ the Title of the book is consecration and Entrustment to Our Lady of Mount Carmel”,  Carmel’s great friend. Now from what I have been doing from promotion to our lady of Mount Carmel, I came to realize that consecration to her is very important and then in the Carmelite spirituality the essence of consecrating ourselves before our lady of Mount Carmel is to entrust ourselves to her. So that informs her title. Consecration and Entrustment to our lady of Mount Carmel. It will be one  of the very important material  that we in the Confraternity of our Lady of Mount Carmel will be using irn teaching people about our lady of Mount Carmel and consecrating them to the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Dukku, Dukkawa Farmers’ Cooperative in Niger state seeks govt intervention over a land dispute

BY UTHMAN BABA-NASEER,MINNA

A group of farmers under the Dukku, Dukkawa Farmers’ Cooperative in Rijau Local Government Area of Niger State has called for urgent intervention over a land dispute that is causing growing tension in the area.

In a petition signed by the spokesman of the group Farmers and made available to journalists in Minna, Mr James Sambo Duku, alleged that the District Head of Duku Alhaji Attahiru Garba Duku threatened to eliminate him if he continued to farm on the farmland.

The cooperative, which has over 150 members from Nafsi, Tungan Rimi, Danzugu, Anguwan Kuku, and Anguwan Dawudu Fara villages, said the land in question belongs to its members and is located in Nafsi village under Dukku District.

According to the farmers, the land was many years ago given temporarily to Fulani settlers by the late district head, Abdullahi Danbauchi, with the agreement of the landowners. The aim was to accommodate visitors and non-indigenes in the community.

However, due to rising cases of kidnapping in the area, the Fulani settlers were later asked to leave, and they reportedly did so peacefully.

The farmers explained that after the settlers left, they informed the current district head, Alhaji Attah Garba, of their plan to return to their land. They said they were surprised when the district head allegedly gave the same land to another group from the Gungawa community in Yauri, Kebbi State, for three years starting from 2021.

The matter was later reported to the Emir of Kontagora, who advised the farmers to remain patient until the three-year agreement expired.

In 2024, after the agreement ended, the cooperative wrote to the Niger State Government, which set up a committee to investigate the issue. The committee visited the land and gathered information.

In 2025, the farmers said they were told by the ward councillor, Haruna Addo, that they could return to their land. However, they were also informed that part of the land had been allocated to the district head without their consent.

The situation became worse in August 2025 when some farmers claimed they found individuals from the Gungawa community spraying chemicals on their crops. This led to a confrontation, which was later controlled before it turned violent.

The cooperative reported the matter to authorities in Yauri, where the Gungawa farmers allegedly presented a document claiming they were given the land for another year after making payment.

The Dukku farmers say this development has increased anger and tension among their members. They warned that if urgent action is not taken, the situation could lead to serious conflict between the communities.

The cooperative is now calling on the National Human Rights Commission to step in and help resolve the matter peacefully.

Chairman of the cooperative, James Sambo, urged authorities to act quickly to prevent loss of lives and restore peace in the area.
