Shettima, Ngige Present As Senate Honours Ifeanyi Ubah In Valedictory Session

Published

on

Vice President, Kashim Shettima, and former Anambra State Governor, Chris Ngige, were present in the Senate on Tuesday, as the Chamber dedicated its plenary session to honour the late Senator Ifeanyi Ubah

Also present in the Chamber were Uche Ekwunife, former Senator representing Anambra Central in the 9th Assembly, Ekaette Akpabio, wife of the President of the Senate, Hauwa Jibrin-Barau, wife of the Deputy President of the Senate; and Oluyemisi Bamidele, wife of the Senate Leader.

Before his death in the United Kingdom on July 26, 2024, Ubah represented Anambra South Senatorial District in the National Assembly.

The casket bearing the remains of the Senator lay in state at the foyer of the White House wing, directly in front of the Senate Chamber, to honour the late lawmaker.

Also, in honour of their late colleague, the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, donned the traditional Isi-Enyi attire, paired with a matching red cap and dark sunglasses, just as the Senate Leader, Opeyemi Bamidele, wore Isi-Agwu attire during the valedictory session.

The Senate also adorned Ubah’s seat in the Chamber with flowers, and was also draped in a cloth green white and green, the colours of the Nigerian flag.

Earlier during the session, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, led a delegation of House leaders in a solemn procession around the late Senator’s casket.

The Senate first suspended its rules to admit family members and close relatives of the late Senator Ubah, for the commencement of a valedictory session in his honour.

Akpabio described the late businessman from Otolo, Nnewi North, as a visionary with extraordinary empathy for all and a champion for economic empowerment and community development.

The President of the Senate who was full of lamentation, described Ubah’s death as a huge deficit in the political terrain of the country.

In his comments, Vice President Kashim Shettima, said: “The last time I met my brother, Senator Ifeanyi Ubah was when you (Akpabio) came with him along with the Majority Leader, Senator Micheal Opeyemi Bamidele and the beautiful Hadiza Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan to condole me over the loss of my mother in-law.

“The youngest member of the Ninth Senate was also one of its brightest stars. His age belied his political dexterity and grassroots affiliation. His generosity knows no bounds. There was a time when the Boko Haram viciously attacked a community in Borno state. Senator Ifeanyi Ubah reached out to me. He sent to my account a donation of N50 million and said please i do not want this donation to be publicised. Ifeanyi Ubah was a good man.

“His rebuilding capacity elevated his political journey beyond others and more established in the arena. I want to align myself with the earlier speaker, Osita Izunaso, who quoted John Donne, who said that ‘in mankind, never send to know for whom the bell tolls. It tolls for thee.’ Death is an inevitable destiny that is hanging on everyone’s neck. We are all travelers on our journeys home. From where? From God to God. My condolences to his family, friends, and political associates. Most especially to you, good folks, who are planning to go on the journey. I will miss my friends. Thank you very much.”

Senate President Godswill Akpabio said: “We dedicate this day to his (Ubah) memory and the services he rendered to this great country.

We mourn the death of one of the most erudite parliamentarian in Nigeria. He was a member of APC. So I condole with the APC, and the APC’s family in the Senate. He was an accomplished businessman. His death has numbed all of us into political turmoil. He was a champion of the alleviation of the sufferings of others. Let us not just mourn, let us celebrate his life and times. He believed in and celebrated friendship.”

On his part, Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau Jibrin, said the Chamber was in deep mourning. He is a big loss to us. Ifeanyi Ubah was an epitome of courage. He was always determined and focussed on his goals. He came into the Senate in 2019 on the platform of Young Progressives Party (YPP), but before you know it, he said he was the leader of YPP caucus in the Senate.

“He became a power broker in the Senate. He spent his life for his people. A philanthropist to the core. We have lost a brother and a friend. We need to follow-up to ensure that his children are well taken care of”, he said.

The Minority Leader of the Senate, Senator Abba Moro, described the death of Ubah as a sad day for the 10th Senate, saying:“This is sunset at noon. Today presents us with a stark reality that Senator Ifeanyi Ubah is no more alive. To the rest of us the activities of today will show us the vanity of life. I have lost a friend and a fantastic colleague. He was a consummate politician who uses both known and unknown instruments to advance his political career.”

Senators Tokunbo Abiru, Adams Oshiomhole, Orji Uzor Kalu, Osita Ngwu, Enyinnaya Abaribe, Sani Musa, Osita Izunaso, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, Ireti Kingibe, Victor Umeh, Tony Nwoye, Yahaya Abdullahi and Senator Ali Ndume all contributed during the debate.

The Senate observed a minute silence in honour of Ubah, proceeded on a procession and filed past the casket, resolved to send a powerful delegation m

ade up of the Committee of the Whole.

Governor Siminalayi Fubara, addressing newsmen at the end of the inspection tour of the Airport Road Bypass in Port Harcourt on Friday.

Governor of Rivers State, Sir Siminalayi Fubara has reassured the people of Rivers State of his administration’s commitment to the completion of the various ongoing infrastructure projects located in different parts of the state.

In a statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Onwuka Nzeshi, the governor who gave this indication on Friday while inspecting the level of work on the new Airport Road Bypass in Port Harcourt, disclosed that the project had reached sixty five per cent (65%) completion stage.

He said that in spite of recent developments on the political scene, he remains in “high spirits,” ready to continue with the task of governance, especially the delivery of projects that will impact positively on the lives of the people.

“I want to assure our people that notwithstanding the situation of things, one thing that I can promise everyone, is that every good work that we have started, by the special grace of God, will continue and we will complete them. We’re in high spirits. Like, we always say, Rivers First,” he said.

Governor Fubara said that his administration conceived the idea of constructing a bypass to the Airport Road to create an alternative route for the communities around the airport and avoid a situation where some of their activities could cause obstruction along the main highway leading to the Port Harcourt International Airport.

“We’ve always had these issues where the community may want to express their anger or dissatisfaction over some activities of the airport authorities, in the process they always block the airport road.

” We thought that in this modern society, such actions are not necessary anymore because whenever it happens, it affects the economic activities of the state. So we liaised with the community and created this bypass,” he said.

Governor Fubara who was conducted round the project site by the contractors, expressed delight at the pace of work on the road, disclosing that the total project will be delivered before October 2026.

Bayelsa Residents Lament Poor Sanitary Conditions within the state capital, Yenagoa

Growing heaps of uncollected refuse and the choking stench from waste dump sites are rapidly turning parts of Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital, into an environmental and public health concern.

Residents and business owners along the Azikoro Road axis, where overflowing waste collection points now emit offensive odours described their conditions as unbearable.

Also, Keke Riders tricycle operators and passengers are seen covering their noses while passing through the area, while some businesses situated near the dump sites are said to be relocating due to the persistent foul smell.

Drainage systems around the affected areas have also become clogged as refuse spills into gutters, increasing fears of flooding and disease outbreaks.

Investigations indicate that the worsening sanitation situation may be linked to challenges within the operations of the Bayelsa State Environmental Sanitation Authority (BESA), the agency established by Governor Douye Diri to implement a modern waste disposal and recycling framework.

Sources familiar with developments disclosed that a private company contracted for refuse evacuation is currently involved in a disagreement with the Authority over issues relating to payment and operational coverage.

A senior official of the company, who requested anonymity, claimed that the dispute has disrupted waste evacuation efforts and undermined the broader environmental goals of the state government.

Some of the Residents who spoke with our correspondent say the worsening conditions now pose serious health and economic implications.

“The smell from the dumps is unbearable, especially in the evenings. We cough and sneeze constantly. This has become a serious health hazard,” said Mr Ebiowei Akimi.

Another resident, Mrs Patience Ogbomo expressed concern over the situation, saying sanitation standards in the capital had deteriorated significantly.

“We used to have better sanitation before. Now refuse is everywhere and nobody seems to care. Our children are the ones suffering most,” she said.

A shop owner near one of the affected locations, Mr Tari Preye, said the poor environmental conditions have impacted businesses.

“Many of us are leaving because customers complain about the odour. Sales have dropped drastically. If urgent action is not taken, this area could become deserted,” he stated.

The Presidential aspirant of Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr Peter Obi has expressed particular concern on the enhancement of quality of education in Nigeria, saying that the quality of education in a country determines their level of development.

Obi who stated this during a visit to Practicing Nursery and Primary School, in his country home of Agulu, Anaocha Local Government Area of Anambra State on Thursday donated a N10millin cheque to them for the rebuilding of a part of the school gutted by mysterious fire in 2024 December.

Recall that he had earlier donated N10million as initial support for the rebuilding of the school block.

Asked what he thinks could be done to salvage schools from the dangers of insecurity in view of the kidnap of pupils and teachers and the killing of one of the teachers in Oyo State, Obi said it all depended on the decisiveness and will power of the government in power to tackle it.

I tell you, we do not only need to secure our schools from insecurity but also the society. And how we can do this is by being decisive. Government needs to be decisive against terrorists to protect schools and the society.

“I have been in government before and we knew what we did to ensure safety in Anambra. It needs decisiveness and will power of the people in government for us to defeat them.”

Donating the N10million cheque, the NDC Presidential hopeful recalled that he had visited the school last year and had promised to help rebuild it.

He said he was in the school to fulfill his promise and to help ensure a conducive environment for children to learn.
