As Senate reconvenes Tuesday, there are indications that top on the agenda of the the Red chamber will be further consideration of the Tax Reform Bills, 2024, resurgence of Insecurity in some parts of the country and Constitution Review among others.

In a statement signed by the leader of the Senate, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele,

passage of Bill has become imperative to reform the country’s tax regime and shore up the revenue of the federation.

According to Bamidele,”This will also help governments at all levels to implement projects and deliver the dividends of democracy.

“As we resume back, the Senate will work with the Executive to resolve all the lingering socio-political issues across the federation, including the situation in Rivers State.

“The essence is to ensure that all stakeholders come to terms on the need to address the root causes of those issues and ensure proper reconciliation of all key actors in the overriding public interest.”

Continuing he said,”The recent resurgence of insecurity in different parts of the federation, especially Benue, Borno, Katsina and Plateau, has caught our attention.

“As the foremost democratic institution that makes laws for the peace, order and good government of the Federation, the Senate will speed engagement with key actors in the security sector and come up with mechanisms for the effective management of national security. We are committed to putting an end to all acts of terrorism across the federation.”

The Senate leader further noted that while the Senate was in recess, “the Presidency announced a number of appointments;the management of the South-South Development Commission. On this ground, we will be screening nominees of the President for different appointments that require the approval of the Senate.

“The review of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended) is going on steady. Now that we have resumed, the Constitution Review Committee chaired by Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau I. Jubrin will speed up the review process with a view to strengthening our federal structure in the interest of all. Likewise, the Senate will kick-start the review of the Electoral Act, 2022 for the conduct of a more credible and transparent election.

“Finally, we have bills of strategic national interest that are pending before the Senate on different sectors of the economy. There is an urgent need to consider those bills and ensure their passage expeditiously.

“We will also encourage our special and standing committees to put in place public hearings that will give us the opportunity to engage with the electorate on various aspects of law-making and give their own inputs.”

Akpabio tasks Senators on Bills critical to national stability, oversight functions, others

President of the Senate,Godswill Akpabio

By George Mgbeleke

Sequel to the resumption of plenary by the Senate after its five weeks Easter and Ramadan recess on Tuesday,President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio has admonished his colleagues to spare no effort in examining critical bills that will bring about national stability.

According to the Senate President,”The rising cost of living, the instability in the energy sector, and the persisting insecurity in parts of the nation all these demand not just attention but legislative action.”

Continuing he said,”Distinguished Senators, Much has transpired in our dear country while we were away. Our economy continues to stretch the patience and resilience of our people.

“Legislative action to support the great work the Executive Arm led by President Bola Tinubu is doing to fix the myriad of challenges which besiege our nation.

“In the South-East and North-West, communities still battle criminality and terrorism. In the North-Central, farmers and herders still seek protection and justice. And in the South-South, the questions of environmental equity and resource fairness remain unresolved.”

Akpabio further noted,”These are not just news headlines they are the bleeding wounds of the republic. Our people look to us, not for rhetoric, but for rescue. But I believe that there is no river we cannot cross if we put our trust in God and faith in the people He has ordained to lead us in both the Executive and Legislative Arms of our government.

“The task ahead of us this session is as solemn as it is historic. We will be examining bills critical to national stability—on security reform, economic resilience, education, technology, and youth empowerment. Our committees will delve into oversight functions that could unlock the performance potential of many MDAs.

“Let us carry out our duties with the spirit of statesmen, not partisans. Let us elevate debate over division. Let us govern with grace, not grudge.

“To the Nigerian people, I say this: Your Senate is back at work. And we have not forgotten your hopes, your hardships, or your hunger for change. We are here—refreshed in spirit, renewed in resolve—to build a nation where peace is not an illusion, and progress is not a promise, but a pattern.”
