Senator Ikechukwu Obiorah

As National Assembly concludes review of the 1999 constitution, a faith-based and community development organization in Zaria, Kaduna State, Fityanatul Islam Gabari, has declared its full support for Senator Ikechukwu Obiorah’s proposal for the establishment of a truly Independent National Electoral Commission(INEC)in Nigeria.

The endorsement, announced at a press briefing in Kaduna, marks growing civil society backing for Obiorah’s push to reform Nigeria’s electoral framework and reduce political interference in the appointment of electoral officers.

Speaking during the briefing, the President of Fityanatul Islam Gabari, Mallam Lawal, said the organization’s decision followed a careful review of Senator Obiorah’s draft bill, which seeks to amend the 1999 Constitution to transfer the power of appointing electoral bodies from the President and State Governors to a neutral and independent institution.

“On behalf of Fityanatul Islam Gabari, Zaria, we formally express our endorsement and full support for Senator IkechukwuObiorah’s draft bill,” Lawal stated.

“We agree that credible elections cannot be achieved while those who contest elections also control the appointment of electoral officials.”

The endorsement follows a lecture delivered by Senator Obiorah in August to members of the Muslim Tertiary Students Association titled “Strengthening Democracy: The Philosophy of Elections and Nigeria’s Fake Democracy.” The lecture, which examined the structural weaknesses in Nigeria’s electoral process, appears to have galvanized support from religious and youth-based organizations.

Senator Obiorah, who submitted the private draft bill to the National Assembly in July, is proposing the creation of a restructured Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) composed of 13 commissioners. Under the plan, six commissioners would be elected by major Nigerian labour and professional bodies, six nominated by the United Nations (UN), and one observer commissioner by Transparency International.

According to the group, this model would strengthen electoral integrity, minimize corruption, and ensure transparency in the use of electoral technology such as the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) and the INEC Result Viewing Portal (IReV).

The group also emphasized the importance of extending voting rights to Nigerians in the diaspora.

“We strongly believe that dishonest and manipulated elections are the root causes of poverty, bad governance, and underdevelopment,” Lawal said.

“This reform, if enacted, will help restore confidence in our democracy and ensure that power truly returns to the people.”

The organization further defended the inclusion of international partners such as the United Nations, noting that the UN and its agencies including UNDP, UNICEF, WHO, and FAO have been longstanding partners in Nigeria’s development and governance processes.

“It is therefore appropriate that they contribute to strengthening our democratic institutions,” Lawal added.

Similarly, the National Muslim Youth Association, an alumni body of the Muslim Tertiary Students Association, sometimelast month also endorsed the bill, describing it as a necessary step toward achieving credible elections and good governance.

The group urged the National Assembly, State Houses of Assembly, and the Presidency to give due consideration to Senator Obiorah’s proposal and expedite its passage.

“The success of this bill will mark a turning point in our political evolution,” the group said, “and reaffirm the belief that democracy must be anchored on fairness, accountability, and the will of the people.

The Administrator of the Presidential Amnesty Programme, Dr Dennis Otuaro, has said that President Bola Tinubu is happy with the significant achievements recorded by the agency in the Niger Delta in about two years.

He spoke at the flag-off of the fourth batch of the two-day “Leadership, Alternative Dispute Resolution, and Mediation Training for PAP Stakeholders” organised by the agency in collaboration with the Alumni Association of the National Defence College (AANDEC) at the Nigerian Army Resource Centre, Abuja, on Monday.

The PAP had in July and August 2025 successfully conducted a similar capacity-building workshop for three batches of its stakeholders at the same military facility.

Otuaro, who said the President is delighted with the agency’s expanded scholarship scheme, inclusive stakeholder engagement, and peacebuilding process in the Niger Delta, urged stakeholders to maintain their position as key players in the region’s peace and development.

According to him, His Excellency, President Tinubu is very supportive of the programme because of his strong desire for the region to enjoy sustainable peace, stability and development.

He reiterated that the workshop is a vital component of the PAP’s peace process with all stakeholders as important partners in the peace initiative.

He stressed that the participants are not only partners for peace, but also the President’s peace ambassadors.

The PAP boss also applauded the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, for his strategic support to strengthen the programme’s initiatives and enable it to achieve the intended objectives for the people of the region.

While declaring the workshop open, Otuaro said, “His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR, is very happy with what we have achieved so far in one year and nine months. As stakeholders, you should continue to be key players in the peace and development of the Niger Delta, which His Excellency has been very supportive of and desirous of.

“The objective behind this training is to ensure that all of us are partners in every peace effort in the Niger Delta. This initiative is also to give you a sense of belonging.

“When we organised this workshop in July and August this year, we assured stakeholders that more people would also participate in the training. We don’t want to do the PAP’s work alone. It is a process of putting our heads together to ensure that the region is peaceful and united. When we are united, Mr President will do more for the region.

“We must also realise that peace starts from our communities; you all are leaders in your own rights. I know and acknowledge the support that the Office has received since we came on board. This leadership workshop is part of our peacebuilding process and is designed to ensure that peace is sustained in our region.

“Since we came on board, we have redirected the Programme towards our people and for the next generation. We have achieved a lot. This 2025-2026 academic session, we have sent 4,500 students, our future leaders, on scholarships to universities within Nigeria. We are doing this to invest in the future of our region.”

Otuaro said that his leadership would not be distracted by the smear campaign of some anti-Niger Delta elements who were angry that the programme had been taken to the people of the region, saying “nobody will hold the region to ransom.”

He further urged stakeholders not to be manipulated by political merchants, but to massively support President Tinubu’s 2027 re-election bid because of his clear agenda for the region.

Otuaro enjoined the stakeholders to participate actively in the workshop and utilise the lessons they would gain to strengthen peace and development in their communities and the Niger Delta in general.

He also expressed appreciation to the management of the Nigerian Army Resource Centre, resource persons, and the President of AANDEC, Rear Admiral Ndidi Agholor (retd.), for partnering with the PAP to deepen the peace process in the region.

Leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ughelli North Local Government Area, Delta State, on Friday unanimously pledged to deliver President Bola Tinubu, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, and all APC candidates in the 2027 general elections.

The resolution was reached at a strategic meeting held at the Uduere country home of the Ughelli North Local Government Chairman, Hon. Jaro Egbo.

The high-level session described as the first major convergence since the recent merger of political structures in the local government, brought together influential party stakeholders who projected a unified front anchored on solidarity, reconciliation, and readiness for electoral victory.

A founding leader of the APC in Delta State and leader of the party in Ughelli North, Olorogun O’tega Emerhor, lauded the defection of Governor Oborevwori and the entire PDP structure into the APC, describing it as “the beginning of a new dawn.”

He said the development had positioned the APC for unprecedented political strength in the state. Emerhor also praised the renewed unity within the party and urged elected officials and appointees to give their full support as preparations intensify for the 2027 elections.

Host of the meeting and Chairman of Ughelli North LGA, Hon. Jaro Egbo, said the APC had entered the 2026 election season in “a different gear,” stressing that the party was determined to prevent any opposition challenge in the area.

He urged members to deepen mobilisation efforts, noting that Ughelli North, Delta State’s largest voting bloc, must deliver overwhelming support for President Tinubu and Governor Oborevwori.

“As a party, we are all sailing together. Our mandate is simple: deliver all APC candidates in 2027,” Egbo stated.

Ughelli North APC Chairman, Hon. Samuel Evwighono, described the meeting as historic, being the first time the entire party structure was converging since the merger.

Evwighono, who said he became chairman “by miracle” and accepted the responsibility “by grace,” explained that his priority had been reconciling aggrieved members to strengthen internal cohesion.

He, however, expressed concern over the low collection of Permanent Voters Cards (PVCs) across the council and urged ward leaders to mobilise residents for massive participation in the ongoing voter registration exercise.

Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Sir Festus Ahon, also called for unity and unwavering support for President Tinubu and Governor Oborevwori, emphasising that Ughelli North, being the governor’s home base, must lead efforts to consolidate the APC.

Other speakers included Prof. Sam Ibodje; Member representing Ughelli North Constituency I in the Delta State House of Assembly, Hon. Matthew Omonade; Commissioner for Transport, Hon. Onoriode Agofure; Surveyor Terry Noah; and all 11 ward chairmen.

They reaffirmed their loyalty to the party and pledged to work vigorously toward securing victory for all APC candidates in 2027.

The meeting ended on a note of renewed optimism, with party leaders resolving to intensify grassroots mobilisation and strengthen APC’s dominance in Ughelli North ahead of the forthcoming elections.
