FORGIVENESS IS DIVINE: SENATOR AKPABIO AS A GRACE CARRIER*

There’s a trend in Nigeria where accusations are louder than the coin box, and everyone scrambles to the high ground of moral outrage. Yet, here comes Senator Godswill Akpabio, the President of the 10th Senate, going against the trend like a devoted monk who has decided that the usual script of lawsuits, vendettas, and endless bitterness won’t augur well.

In our clime, these spectacles are enough to fill a library. This stands out like the script for one of the best sellers.
A wild and unsubstantiated allegation of murder and organ harvesting levied on Akpabio, which occasioned investigations, courtrooms, and quite unexpectedly, forgiveness.

In a land where politicians hold on to grudges tighter than their lust for power, Akpabio chose grace. Amazing! Could this be a sign that even in our polarised landscape, truth and reconciliation might yet have a fighting chance?

● *The weird allegation*
Scandal usually starts small and balloons into monstrous dimensions that devour reputations and leave a foul stench on the victim.

In this case, it was the telephone conversation between Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan and a US-based activist – Sandra Duru that leaked – naturally, because what good is a juicy gist if it stays private?

The claims were as shocking as they were grave: that Akpabio and his wife had a hand in the 2021 murder of Iniobong Umoren, a young job-seeker from Akwa Ibom State. Not just murder, but with the twisted tale that Umoren’s organs were harvested to treat the wife’s illness.

One marvels at how such tales gain legs in Nigerian politics. It is as if we have all signed up for a perpetual drama series, complete with villains, victims, and plot twists. These were accusations that could ruin lives, hurled into the public space without a shred of evidence.

In a country where political rivals sharpen knives at every turn, this one went deep, painting Senator Akpabio as some sort of macabre mastermind.

● *The Facts of the matter*
On April 2, 2025, Sandra Duru wrote a formal petition to the Inspector General of Police, demanding investigation into the leaked conversation between her and Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan. The petition was assigned to the Police Monitoring Unit. The investigation took the police team to Akwa Ibom State for a thorough assignment. They pored over certified court records, the post-mortem report, and also interviewed the family members of the late Iniobong Umoren who had witnessed the autopsy. What emerged was a picture as clear as day, though not what the accusers were expecting.

Back in April 2021, the youthful Iniobong Umoren met a tragic end at the hands of Uduak Frank Akpan, who lured her with a fake job offer, sexually assaulted, and murdered her. Akpan was tried in the Akwa Ibom State High Court, convicted, and sentenced to death.

• *Any post-mortem?*
It was confirmed no organs were missing; everything was intact, as attested to by Umoren’s sister – Ifiok Umoren, who stood there during medical procedure. “No organs were removed,” Ifiok Umoren said plainly, putting paid to the offensive rumour.

• *Any link to Akpabio?* None whatsoever. Something must have plucked from the imagination of the purveyor of this indiscretion – who is a known content creator and also given to mischief and lawlessness. The Akwa Ibom State Director of Public Prosecution – Mr Friday Johnson Itim, laid it out: the crime was a lone wolf act, no connections to high places. The allegation was “false and without any iota of truth,” as the police report declared.

• *Any deepfakes?*
The forensic audio analysis contrary to Senator Natasha’s denial, confirmed the recording was the real voice communication between Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan and Sandra Duru who were both brought together by one Ina Okopi Agu, not AI generated or deepfake. So, there you have it: a baseless storm in a teacup, debunked by cold and hard facts. One cannot help but wonder why such fictions take root so easily in our soil. Is it the thrill of taking down a highly-placed individual? Or is it a national pastime to murmur and spread rumours without demanding evidence?

● *The legal aftermath*
With the truth laid bare, the legal wheels began to turn in earnest. On March 29, 2025, the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation slammed charges of criminal defamation on Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, zeroing in on that organ-harvesting imputation. Akpabio, no stranger to the rough and tumble of politics, initially went on the offensive, filing many defamation suits against various individuals, including the aforementioned Senator. One could hardly blame him; in the arena of high stakes politics, you fight fire with fire or risk getting scorched.

Regardless, the tale twists away from the predictable. Instead of dragging this out into an endless courtroom saga, Akpabio paused. As discerning readers know, many of these courtroom battles often end in mutual exhaustion, with no winners save the lawyers. Yet Akpabio’s move hinted at something deeper, a willingness to step back from the brink.

● *A gesture of Forgiveness or Foolishness?*
And then came the pivotal moment, as if scripted by a higher power of providence. It was during the New Year Mass at Sacred Heart Parish in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, early in January 2026. The priest preached on forgiveness, that age-old virtue we all nod at but seldom practice.

The Senate President later reflected that the sermon felt aimed straight at him, a divine nudge in the ribs. “It was as if the priest was speaking directly to me,” he said, realising the weight of carrying grudges into a new year.

Inspired by faith, Senator Godswill Akpabio directed his legal team to withdraw all pending lawsuits in every court. No fanfare, no conditions; just a clean slate. The notice of discontinuance was filed, and on January 15, 2026, the Federal Capital Territory High Court struck out the charges against Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.

In Nigerian politics, where forgiveness is as common as snow in the Sahara, this was nothing short of extraordinary. One must show respect to whom it is due. It is so easy to talk about grace, but to actually demonstrate it? That is the trademark of legends.

*A Word to Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan*
As we celebrate this uncommon act of grace, a word of caution becomes necessary for the beneficiary thereof. Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan would do well to recognise that she has been shown a level of magnanimity rarely seen in our clime. She now stands at a crossroad where the path she chooses will define not just her immediate political future but her legacy. To continue to travel on this ignominious path with tar brush and theatrical indignation, having been handed an exit from a well-deserved legal ordeal, would be the height of political folly. The public is watching; history is recording. The wise course now is to accept the olive branch, reflect deeply on the gravity of her invidious umbrage and conduct herself with the maturity that her office demands. Grace, after all, is not a licence to repeat old mistakes but an invitation to embrace a new, better and purposeful path.

● *Public reaction*
The public, like a jubilation in a rapture, responded with a wave of overwhelming support for Senator Akpabio. A coalition of civil society groups under the aegis of Human Rights Africa led the applause, hailing and praising Akpabio’s act as an “exemplary display of maturity, tolerance and magnanimity.” They were never wrong; in a time of division, this gesture spoke volumes about the Senate President’s demonstrated commitment to the ideals of our social democracy, the rule of law, peaceful co-existent, national cohesion and institutional integrity.

● *The enduring lessons*
How did such a baseless allegation gain such massive traction? Sandra Duru still calls for accountability, insisting the matter is not buried. Fair play to her; voices like that keep the powerful on their toes. But for Akpabio, the chapter is closed, with a focus on forgiveness over vengeance.

• *The wider implications*
In an age of instant judgements and viral claims, Akpabio’s actions demonstrate leadership that rises above the fray. It is a lesson in how truth prevails, grace bridges divides, and reconciliation can heal what division tears apart.

Those who have studied the growth of other nations understand that to get things done in this country, a touch of radical idealism is needed.

• *Akpabio’s path of grace?*
That is idealism in action, pursued not with ruthlessness but with the softened heart of a grace carrier and a man who knows his priest is a human vessel bearing a divine message.

As we murmur and grumble our way forward, we should all pause and reflect. In Nigeria, where nice guys often finish last, Senate President Godswill Akpabio shows that grace doesn’t mean weakness. Forgiveness doesn’t mean foolishness. It means strength. And in our polarised landscape, that is an honourable path, a path worth following. To forgive is never foolishness but it is divine.

InmatImates of the Onitsha Correctional Center, Anambra State, used the occasion of Mothers Day celebration on Sunday to Jubilate over the present of the Anglican
Bishop on the Niger, Rt. Rev. Dr. Owen Nwokolo and the Women Ministry of the diocese, led by his wife, Dr. Elsie Nwokolo, celebrated the Mothering Sunday with them in the spirit of motherhood.

Shortly after the special mass held in their honour, the inmates were counseled by the Bishop and wife, feted with 30 coolers of cooked rice, one cow, and presented with copies of Holy Bible,15 admitted into Anglican Youth Fellowship, even as 19 received sacrament of confirmation.and Mrs Nwokolo empowered them with cash.

The Bishop, his wife, several ministers of the diocese and over 100 parishioners, had before 9 am arrived the centre and solemnly processed for a two-and-half hour eventful service.

In his 30-minute homily during the service, the bishop had, while dwelling on “The dangers of ignoring wise counsel”, stressed the need for one to always be properly guided in life.

Making copious reference to the legendary Julius Caesar and the Ides of Match episode, Nwokolo remarked that the Sunday, March 15, 2026 was a good reminder to the inmates of the danger of ignoring good counsels.

The bishop said that many people, including the youth, still made the mistake of Caesar by discountenancing quality advice of their parents and elders.

Admonishing the youth to always “beware of Ideas of March”, he urged them to learn the habit of listening to their mothers’ advice, assuring them that their mothers would not receive them.

“You need somebody to guide you. If you don’t receive quality advice, you will fall, and failing is not a palatable experience “, he told
Nigerian youth.

Bishop Nwokolo however appealed to mothers not to give their children wrong counsel, but to instead constantly pray for them.

He encouraged inmates of the correction center to see their present condition as a transformative phase and not as the end of their lives, praying God for their soon regain of freedom.

In a brief chat shortly after the service, the Chaplain of the Centre, Ven John Nkwoemezie, expressed joy for the year’s outing saying that the 2026 Episcopal Visit was a big success.

According to him, the candidates for both the AYF and the confirmation performed extremely well in catechism and scripture reading, adding that while 15 boys were received into the AYF, 19 received the sacrament of confirmation, in the ratio of 15 males and 4, females.

The chaplain commended Bishop Nwokolo and his wife for the parental care and invaluable attention which he said the chaplaincy regularly received from them.

*Tinubu’s Security Strategy Failing as Terrorists Kill Soldiers, Civilians – HURIWA*

National Coordinator HURIWA, Comrade Emmanuel Nnadozie Onwubiko

By George Mgbeleke

The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has strongly condemned the escalating wave of terrorist attacks across the country, declaring that the continued killing of soldiers, security operatives and civilians is incontrovertible evidence that the current security strategy of the Federal Government has failed.

In a statement issued in Abuja on Sunday, the civil rights advocacy group said the recent spate of deadly attacks (from Plateau State to the North-East) demonstrates that Nigeria’s counterterrorism architecture has collapsed under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, warning that the country risks descending further into chaos if urgent structural reforms are not implemented.

HURIWA was reacting to reports that no fewer than 20 security operatives and vigilantes were killed in an ambush by heavily armed bandits in Wanka and surrounding communities of the Garga axis in Kanam Local Government Area of Plateau State. According to the Kanam Development Association, the victims included 12 security personnel, among them two senior military officers, as well as eight vigilante members who were assisting security forces in protecting vulnerable communities.

The joint patrol team was reportedly travelling in two vehicles during a routine security operation covering the communities of Garga, Kyaram and Gyambau when hundreds of bandits ambushed them near Wanka at about 2:00 p.m. on Friday, resulting in a deadly exchange of gunfire that left many of the operatives dead.

HURIWA described the development as a “tragic and alarming national security failure,” noting that the killing of trained soldiers and senior military officers by non-state actors should serve as a serious red flag that the country’s counterterrorism strategy is no longer working.

The group further cited additional reports of targeted killings in Plateau State, including the brutal murder of traders travelling to a market in the Barikin Ladi axis. In that incident, gunmen reportedly stopped vehicles at an improvised checkpoint and interrogated passengers about their identity before opening fire on those who identified themselves as Hausa traders.

HURIWA also referenced reports indicating that at least 65 Nigerian soldiers were killed in coordinated raids by insurgents belonging to the Islamic State West Africa Province in the North-East within a two-week period. The insurgents reportedly overran several military bases in Borno State, killing dozens of soldiers and abducting hundreds of civilians while deploying sophisticated weapons including anti-aircraft machine guns and drones.

According to HURIWA, the scale, frequency and sophistication of these attacks show that terrorist groups are increasingly better armed and tactically superior to the security forces tasked with protecting Nigerians.

The association said the situation represents a clear indictment of the current leadership of Nigeria’s security establishment, particularly the Office of the National Security Adviser headed by Nuhu Ribadu.

HURIWA therefore called for the immediate removal of the National Security Adviser, arguing that the country urgently requires a far more experienced military strategist capable of coordinating a comprehensive and decisive war against terrorism and organised armed violence.

“The continued killing of Nigerian soldiers, including senior officers, by terrorists and bandits is a national embarrassment and a glaring signal that the current security framework has collapsed,” the group stated.

According to HURIWA, a competent and battle-tested military general should be appointed to replace the current National Security Adviser in order to restore strategic coordination among the armed forces, intelligence agencies and other security institutions.

The association said Nigeria’s security challenges have become multidimensional and require a radically new approach rather than the “repetitive and ineffective tactics” that have allowed terrorist groups to expand their operational capacity.

HURIWA also accused the Federal Government of failing to secure Nigeria’s porous borders, arguing that the steady flow of illegal arms into the country is directly fueling the expansion of terrorist networks.

The group said Nigeria’s border management system has effectively collapsed, enabling criminal groups to move weapons, fighters and logistics across international boundaries with little resistance.

According to HURIWA, the failure to secure the country’s borders has allowed terrorist organisations to access military-grade weapons with alarming ease while ordinary citizens remain largely defenceless.

As part of its recommendations, the association called for the introduction of a more liberal firearms licensing regime that would allow law-abiding Nigerians to legally acquire weapons for self-defence.

HURIWA argued that citizens should not be left completely vulnerable to heavily armed terrorists who operate freely in rural communities and along highways.

“The reality on the ground today is that terrorists and bandits possess sophisticated weapons while innocent citizens remain completely defenceless. This imbalance must be corrected if communities are to survive,” the group said.

The association further recommended the introduction of structured military training programmes for adult citizens as part of a national civil defence strategy aimed at strengthening community resilience against attacks.

According to HURIWA, countries facing similar security threats have adopted civilian defence systems that equip responsible citizens with basic training in self-protection and emergency response.

The group added that the Federal Government should consider policies that would allow properly vetted and trained citizens to carry higher-grade weapons for self-defence, especially in rural areas that experience frequent terrorist invasions.

HURIWA said the objective of such reforms would not be to militarise society but to ensure that communities are no longer left helpless in the face of heavily armed attackers.

The group stressed that the increasing number of attacks on military formations and patrol teams indicates that terrorist groups now possess operational confidence that must be urgently dismantled through a comprehensive national security overhaul.

According to the association, the country’s counterterrorism strategy must include stronger intelligence coordination, enhanced border security, modern surveillance technology and decisive leadership capable of anticipating and neutralising threats before they escalate.

HURIWA warned that unless bold and innovative reforms are introduced, Nigeria could face an even more dangerous phase of insurgency that threatens national stability.

The group expressed condolences to the families of the slain soldiers, vigilantes and civilians who have lost their lives in the recent attacks, describing them as patriots who paid the ultimate price in defence of their communities and the nation.

HURIWA concluded by urging the Federal Government to urgently adopt a new national security doctrine capable of protecting lives and property, stressing that safeguarding citizens remains the primary responsibility of the state.

“The survival of Nigeria depends on decisive leadership, a new security doctrine and a comprehensive war against terrorism. Anything short of this will only embolden the enemies of our nation,” the association stated.

By George Mgbeleke

Senate, on Wednesday at plenary passed for second reading the Federal Capital Territory Administration, FCTA 2026 Appropriation Bill, authorizing the issuance of N2.2 trillion from the FCT statutory revenue fund.

The passage of the Bill followed consideration of the lead debate presented by the Senate Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele (APC Ekiti Central) during plenary.

Bamidele explained that out of the total budget, N165.8 billion is allocated for personnel costs, N378.2 billion for overheads, and N1.657 trillion for capital projects.

According to him, the capital projects allocation is expected to drive development in the Federal Capital Territory, and improve the quality of life for residents.

He highlighted Abuja’s unique role as the nation’s capital and emphasized that the budget seeks to support infrastructure, social services, public utilities, health facilities, educational institutions, and transportation networks to enhance the quality of life for residents and visitors.

The bill also mandates monthly and quarterly reports to the National Assembly to ensure transparency and value for money in project execution.

Bamidele added that the FCTA 2026 budget is expected to focus on key areas such as infrastructure development, healthcare, education, and security, among others.

Contributing, the Deputy Senate President, Senator Jibrin Barau (APC Kano North) praised the N1.6 trillion allocation for capital projects, saying it shows the seriousness of the FCTA in the physical development of the Territory.

In his remarks, the Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio commended President Bola Tinubu and the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike for their commitment to the Territory’s development, especially in terms of roads infrastructure, public buildings, and other social amenities.

The Senate President referred the bill to the Committees on the Federal Capital Territory and Area Councils for further review before returning to plenary in one week.
