In a bid to give Nigerians a trusted and transparent Electoral Act ahead of 2027 genaral election, the Senate on Thursday set up a special committee to review and harmonise divergent views on the ongoing amendment of the Electoral Act 2022, as part of efforts to strengthen Nigeria\u2019s electoral framework.<\/p>\n
The committee is to be chaired by the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Judiciary and Legal Matters, Senator Niyi Adegbomire, with Senators Adamu Aleiro, Waziri Tambuwal, Adams Oshiomhole, Muhammed Goje, Tony Nwoye and Titus Zam serving as members.<\/p>\n
The decision of the Red chamber followed hours of a closed-door session by lawmakers, after which the Senate mandated the committee to conclude its assignment within forty-eight hours and submit its report ahead of the next plenary session scheduled for Tuesday.<\/p>\n
Speaking on the mandate of the committee, the Senate said the amendment of the Electoral Act is aimed at reforming the nation\u2019s electoral process by enhancing transparency, boosting voter confidence and promoting wider participation in elections.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe objective of this amendment is to strengthen the credibility of our electoral system and address grey areas observed in previous elections,\u201d a senator said during plenary.<\/p>\n
Key proposals under consideration include the electronic transmission of election results, stricter penalties for electoral offences and the expansion of voter identification options to curb fraud and malpractice.<\/p>\n
Lawmakers noted that the expedited timeline given to the committee underscores the urgency of providing a credible and effective legal framework ahead of future elections in the country.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Senate is determined to ensure that the Electoral Act reflects best practices and responds to the expectations of Nigerians,\u201d the Senate leadership stated.<\/p>\n
