A member representing Bayelsa has maintained that establishing Federal University of Science and Technology in Bayelsa state will end restiveness and militancy in Niger Delta<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
This is as Senate has passed for second reading a bill seeking to\u00a0 establish the Federal University of Science and Technology Okorokorisei in Bayelsa\u00a0 state for teaching and research in science and technology.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
The passage of the Bill followed the presentation of the general principles of the bill by the sponsor\u00a0 Senator Benson Friday (PDP-Bayelsa) at plenary yesterday.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Leading the debate on the Bill, Senator Friday said the\u00a0 university would\u00a0 not serve only Bayelsa\u00a0 people but an institution of learning\u00a0 where\u00a0 people from all parts of the country could come and learn.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
He said the\u00a0 proposed university was\u00a0 for the training of young men and women and\u00a0 older Nigerians\u00a0 in science and technology, adding\u00a0 that\u00a0 education\u00a0 was a driver of\u00a0 modern economy.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
According to him, the university\u00a0 would also teach courses that are particularly relevant to each immediate area, especially marine engineering, petroleum, and other fields of research.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
He said beyond those disciplines, the\u00a0 university would also produce graduates in diverse fields of engineering, medical science, and information technology among others.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
“The university will award both graduate and postgraduate degrees, and contribute in developing the manpower required for building our nation’s economy.”<\/div>\n

Speaking with journalists after plenary, Senator Benson Friday said \u201cwe need education more than any other person is because as I’m talking to you 90% of the militancy in the country is in southern Ijaw<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u201cIf you take away militancy in southern Nigeria then the militancy issue,\u00a0 and all of that will come to the barest minimum.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
I tell you more than 60 percent of those who are called militants that became involved with those who never went to school and how do we bring them to school?<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
He said the children of the militants should go to school where their parents could not.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
He said there was need to take advantage within the global economy to build\u00a0 the nation\u2019s manpower base via establishment of the deserving universities.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
He said there was need\u00a0 to establish more universities to train and equip them and give them a hope\u00a0 and a future.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
“That is why the proposed federal university of science and technology\u00a0 should be\u00a0 established.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
“Establishing this university will also draw young people out of the streets and get them engaged in activities that will brighten their future and the future of this society.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
“It is a weapon against youth restlessness and other biases that may arise in the future,” he said.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Contributing Senator Seriake Dickson(PDP-Bayelsa) said the bill sought the need for additional investment in the nation’s education sector.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
He urged lawmakers to support the establishment of the institution, given the need for additional educational\u00a0 investment in the state.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
President of Senate, Godswill Akpabio shortly after the bill passed second reading referred it to Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFund for further legislative inputs and to return back to Senate in four weeks.<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
