{"id":10838,"date":"2026-02-05T04:28:14","date_gmt":"2026-02-05T04:28:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dailyechoes.ng\/?p=10838"},"modified":"2026-02-05T04:28:14","modified_gmt":"2026-02-05T04:28:14","slug":"senate-eulogizes-virtues-of-senator-okey-ezea-in-a-valedictory","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dailyechoes.ng\/index.php\/2026\/02\/05\/senate-eulogizes-virtues-of-senator-okey-ezea-in-a-valedictory\/","title":{"rendered":"Senate eulogizes virtues  of Senator Okey Ezea in a Valedictory"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By Our Correspondent <\/p>\n<p>The Senate, on Wednesday, paid last respect to its deceased member, the late Senator Okechukwu Ezea, who passed away on November 18, 2025, at the age of 62. <\/p>\n<p>The late lawmaker who represented Enugu North Senatorial District in the 10th Senate on the platform of the Labour Party (LP), resisted all pressure to defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), when other lawmakers were cross carpeting.<\/p>\n<p>During the valedictory session, Senators extolled the good character of Ezea, enumerating his enormous contributions to humanity and society in the areas of politics and business. <\/p>\n<p>Setting the stage for the valedictory session, the Leader of the Senate, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele (APC-Ekiti Central), described the news of Ezea\u2019s death as a profound shock, saying it \u201csilenced a calm but principled voice in this Chamber and robbed the nation of a patriot who believed deeply in service, equity, and the supremacy of the public good.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bamidele observed that the late politician brought \u201cquiet wisdom\u201d to Senate debates and deliberations, demonstrating unwavering commitment to national unity, describing Ezea as a gentle personality and bridge builder across party lines. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs an industrialist, he was a colossus and a think tank for several boards in both private and public sectors,\u201d Bamidele said. \u201cHe carried the hopes of Enugu North with dignity, sponsoring bills and motions that reflected his commitment to service. He came, he saw, and he excelled. His brilliance will shine forever,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>Senators Victor Umeh, Enyinnaya Abaribe, Orji Uzor Kalu, and others who spoke, poured encomiums on their late colleague, saying that he exhibited unbeatable character both in private and public life.<\/p>\n<p>Deputy President of the Senate, Barau Jubrin (APC-Kano) described Ezea as a good man who stood by his convictions. Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe (APGA-Abia South) said Ezea was a role model for his constituents, while Senator Victor Umeh (LP-Anambra Central) called him a colossus in human capital development and a friend to all.<\/p>\n<p>Senator Osita Ngwu (PDP-Enugu West) described Ezea as firm, courageous, and positive, noting that his demise is a great loss to Nsukka Senatorial District and Enugu State. Senator Kelvin Chukwu (APC-Enugu East) added that Ezea was a man of integrity who stood by his beliefs and convictions.<\/p>\n<p>President of the Senate Godswill Akpabio, in his tribute said, \u201cThough he did not live to see the fulfillment of Nigeria\u2019s promise, God took him to the mountaintop and showed him the Nigeria of promise. He breathed his last comforted by the knowledge that his labors would not be in vain.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Akpabio highlighted Ezea\u2019s distinguished service as Vice Chairman of the Senate Committee on Housing and across other Committees, describing him as a faithful servant of the Nigeria whose legacy demonstrates that public office is a trust and service is a calling.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;He served with distinction as Vice Chairman of the Senate Committee on Housing, and contributed meaningfully across other committee assignments\u2014always acquitting himself with diligence and earning the respect of his colleagues.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Senator Ezea believed deeply in the dignity of public service. He believed that laws matter, that institutions endure, and that the slow, patient work of nation-building\u2014though often thankless\u2014is noble labour. In committee rooms and on this floor, in counsel and in debate, he brought a calm sense of duty, an abiding loyalty to the Constitution, and an unwavering commitment to the people who entrusted him with their mandate.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;His was not a politics of noise, but of purpose; not of spectacle, but of service. He understood that nations are built not only by those who command attention, but by those who shoulder responsibility\u2014day after day, bill after bill, duty after duty.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Today, we mourn his passing, but we also honour his life. We take comfort in the knowledge that he played his part that he kept faith with his oath, and that he leaves behind a legacy of service worthy of remembrance. Nigeria is poorer for his departure, but richer for the example he set,&#8221; Akpabio stated.<\/p>\n<p>He noted that a high-powered delegation will be sent to condole with his family, the people, and government of Enugu State. Christian and Muslim prayers were offered, and a minute of silence was observed in his memory.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, before the commencement of the session, Ezea\u2019s remains were laid in state at the foyer of the Senate chamber.
