{"id":11574,"date":"2026-03-06T11:27:56","date_gmt":"2026-03-06T11:27:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dailyechoes.ng\/?p=11574"},"modified":"2026-03-06T11:27:56","modified_gmt":"2026-03-06T11:27:56","slug":"aba-literary-week-alumni-promote-reading-culture-among-students","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dailyechoes.ng\/index.php\/2026\/03\/06\/aba-literary-week-alumni-promote-reading-culture-among-students\/","title":{"rendered":"Aba Literary Week: Alumni Promote Reading Culture Among Students"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By  Philip Ezuma, Port Harcourt <\/p>\n<p>Several public and private secondary schools in Aba  participated in the maiden edition of Aba Literary Week 1.0, an educational empowerment initiative to promote reading culture and healthy academic competition among students.<\/p>\n<p>The maiden Aba Literary Week held at Priqueen International School, Ogbor Hill, Aba, Abia State, was organised by the All-Saints Secondary School Ehere, &#8217;92 Set, featuring quiz competitions, literary reviews, and presentations centred on the novel Beaten, written by Obinna Olewe, a member of the alumni association.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking during the occasion, the Proprietress of Priqueen International School, Mrs Lilian Ogbonnaya, stated that the literary week was aimed at boosting reading culture among secondary school students through quizzes and literary reviews. <\/p>\n<p>The Proprietress noted that literary exercise was a good way to encourage students to read, write, and calculate, stating that it would broaden their reading horizons and help them embrace intellectual challenges.<\/p>\n<p>Mrs. Ogbonnaya said the competition is about building confidence and promoting literacy, especially in public schools, where it\u2019s needed most.<\/p>\n<p>The Director of Education Services at Abia State Basic and Secondary Education, Mrs Stella Kelechi Ogugbuo, praised the initiative and called it a shared commitment to promoting literacy and nurturing a reading culture among the younger generation.<\/p>\n<p>Ogugbuo noted that the goal of the competition is not simply to identify the best speller or writer, but to cultivate intellectual growth, encourage self-expression, and boost confidence among students.<\/p>\n<p>She commended the Governor of Abia State, Dr Alex Otti, for reviving education in the state and acknowledged the support of alumni associations in this regard. <\/p>\n<p>The Director of Priqueen International School, Mr Orji Ogbonnaya, reiterated that the literary competition would rekindle students&#8217; interest in reading. He observed that readers of today would become leaders tomorrow.<\/p>\n<p> \u201cThrough platforms like this, we give children the opportunity to grow intellectually, develop critical thinking skills, and express themselves meaningfully,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The 2026 Literary Week promoted academic excellence, healthy competition, and unity among secondary schools in Aba, further demonstrating the All-Saints Secondary School Class of 1992 Alumni&#8217;s commitment to advancing education in Abia State.<\/p>\n<p>Organisers said the programme forms part of the All Saints \u201992 Set\u2019s community impact initiative and aligns with the educational targets of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 4, which promotes quality education.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking on the initiative, the President of the All Saints \u201992 Set, Chief Engr. Martin Ikechukwu Uzoegwu described the project as a strategic investment in young minds.<\/p>\n<p>He said the association is committed to building a sustainable platform that encourages lifelong learning, strengthens reading culture, and positively influences the educational ecosystem within Aba and beyond.<\/p>\n<p>Also speaking, Chairman of the Organising Committee, Engr. Samuel Ogbuagu said the literary week was designed to foster collaboration among alumni, schools, government institutions, and the private sector.<\/p>\n<p>According to him, this programme is not just an event but the foundation for an annual educational empowerment framework that will continue to grow and benefit students and schools in our community.<\/p>\n<p>The literary event brought together several secondary schools in Aba, including Word of Faith Group of Schools, Jet Age Private Schools, Ehere Community Secondary School, National Institute of Nigerian Languages (NINLAN), Ogbor Hill Secondary School, Presbyterian Secondary School, Great Big Thinkers, Giant Immaculate, and Ehere Community Secondary School. <\/p>\n<p>After a keenly contested academic battle, the National Institute of Nigerian Languages (NINLAN) emerged in first position, earning accolades for its outstanding performance and consolation prizes.
