Zulum describes  attack as despicable, cruel, and cowardly,"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By Our Correspondent <\/p>\n<p>About  22 person were feared dead  while several others were  injured in a triple Improvised Explosive Device (IED), blast suspected to be Boko Haram  insurgents at the  busy Post office area, Monday Market and University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH), gate all in Maiduguri metropolis.<\/p>\n<p>Confirming the incident, the Borno state Police Command, in a statement issued by its spokesman , ASP.Nahum Daso said Preliminary investigation reveals that the incidents were carried out by suspected suicide bombers.<\/p>\n<p>He lamented that a total of twenty three (23) persons lost their lives, while one hundred and eight (108) others sustained varying degrees of injuries.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Following the devastating suspected suicide IED explosions that occurred at about 1924HRS on 16th March, 2026, at (1.) Maiduguri Monday Market, (2.) University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH) gate, and (3.) Post Office Flyover area, Maiduguri&#8221;, the police said.<\/p>\n<p>ASP Daso said &#8220;Following the incidents, a combined team of Police Tactical Units, the Military, and other Joint Security Operatives were swiftly deployed to the affected areas. The scenes were immediately secured, cordoned off, and subjected to thorough sweep operations by Police Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Unit Base 13 Maiduguri to rule out the presence of any additional threats.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The command said the  Commissioner of Police, CP Naziru Abdulmajid, visited the affected locations to conduct an on-the-spot assessment of the situation and to evaluate ongoing response efforts.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, the command while  commiserating  with the  victims and their families, assured the public of the Command\u2019s unwavering commitment to safeguarding lives and property.<\/p>\n<p>The statement added,&#8221; victims were promptly evacuated by emergency responders, including the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), to medical facilities where they are currently receiving treatment.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Command  assured that  that normalcy has been fully restored in the affected areas. Meanwhile, joint security operatives have heightened security presence and surveillance across Maiduguri and its environs to prevent any further occurrences.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Police, Investigations  are ongoing to further ascertain the circumstances surrounding the incidents and to bring perpetrators to justice.<\/p>\n<p>The Borno State Police Command urged  members of the public to remain calm, vigilant, and to promptly report any suspicious movements or objects to the nearest security agency through the following Emergency contact numbers: 08068075581, 08023473293.<\/p>\n<p>The Command appreciates the cooperation and resilience of residents and reassures all of its commitment to maintaining peace and security in the State.<\/p>\n<p>Also, the Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana  Zulum, has condemned in the strongest terms the explosion that occurred in some parts of the metropolis on Monday evening.<\/p>\n<p>The Governor  who is currently in Saudi Arabia for the Lesser Hajj, described the attack as despicable, cruel, and cowardly, targeting innocent people in the holy month of Ramadan.<\/p>\n<p>Zulum In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media, Dauda Iliya, called for increased vigilance and heightened security measures, particularly in places of worship, as the festive period beckons.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am deeply saddened by the explosions that occurred in parts of the metropolis on Monday evening.<br \/>\nMy thoughts and prayers are with the families of the victims and those injured as a result of the blast. The act is utterly condemnable, barbaric, and inhumane,\u201d said Zulum.<\/p>\n<p>According to the governor,\u201cThe recent surge in attacks is not unconnected with intense military operations in the Sambisa forest and other hideouts of the insurgents. &#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He  assured the  people of the state that the military and other security agencies are on top of the situation, as adequate security measures have been taken to forestall further security breach in Maiduguri and the entire state.<\/p>\n<p>He called on residents to remain calm, go about their usual activities, and report any suspicious movement or activity to security agencies.<\/p>\n<p>Also confirming the incident, the Northeast Operation Hadin Kai The Headquarters  Joint Task Force (North East) Operatio Kai said it&#8217;s troops in collaboration with the Nigerian Police Ordinance team and other security agencies  have responded to the incident by securing and condone off the areas of the incidents.<\/p>\n<p>The theater Command in a statement issued by its spokesman , Lt Col Sani Uba said &#8221; the Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK) wishes to inform the general public of suicide bomb explosions that occurred at about 7:05 p.m. on Monday, 16 March 2026, in Maiduguri Metropolitan Council (MMC).&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8221; The explosions were carried out by suspected Boko Haram terrorist suicide bombers who detonated improvised explosive devices at three different locations within the city, namely the Post Office area, Monday Market axis and the entrance to the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH) during the period of Iftar (breaking of fast). The cowardly attacks targeted crowded public areas in an attempt by the terrorists to inflict mass casualties and create panic within the metropolis.&#8221; The statement said.<\/p>\n<p>The theater Command said &#8221; the troops of Operation HADIN KAI, in conjunction with the Nigeria Police Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Team and other sister security agencies, responded swiftly to the incident and immediately secured and cordoned off the affected locations to prevent further harm. Emergency response teams, including personnel from  the National  Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and  other medical service providers, promptly evacuated casualties to the General Hospital, Specialist Hospital and the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital for urgent medical attention.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Military said &#8221; Medical teams are currently attending to injured victims at various health facilities across the city, while emergency responders continue rescue and evacuation efforts at the affected locations.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Preliminary information further indicates that the terrorists may have deployed multiple suicide bombers into Maiduguri with the intention of carrying out coordinated suicide bombings at crowded locations. Security forces have therefore intensified surveillance, patrols and counter-IED measures across the metropolis to track down any remaining suspects and prevent further attacks&#8221;, the statement added.<\/p>\n<p>The OPHK therefore urged the  public to remain calm but vigilant, avoid crowded areas where possible and promptly report any suspicious persons, unattended items or unusual activities to the nearest security agency.
