The Coalition of South East Youth Leaders (COSEYL), the apex sociopolitical youth group in the South East geopolitical zone expresses its outrage and unequivocal condemnation of the reported arrest of Kaduna-based Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Tijjani Umar, following his hosting of a prominent political figure in his residence.<\/p>\n
In a statement signed by COSEYL President General,Comrade Goodluck Ibem, this disturbing development is not only shocking but represents a dangerous assault on the fundamental principles of democracy, civil liberty, and the rule of law. The alleged action is anti-democratic, wicked, barbaric, and unacceptable in any society that claims to uphold justice and freedom.<\/p>\n
COSEYL views this incident, as a blatant attempt to intimidate citizens and suppress freedom of association, expression, and movement\u2014rights that are clearly guaranteed under the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.<\/p>\n
Nigeria is not a police state. No citizen should be harassed, intimidated, or arrested simply for exercising their constitutional rights or for hosting a guest, regardless of political affiliation. Such actions set a dangerous precedent and signal a steady drift toward authoritarianism.<\/p>\n
We state clearly: Injustice to one is injustice to all. An attack on one Nigerian, anywhere in the country, is an attack on every citizen who believes in democracy, fairness, and justice.<\/p>\n
We therefore demand the immediate and unconditional release of Sheikh Ahmad Tijjani Umar and a full and transparent explanation from the relevant authorities regarding the circumstances surrounding his arrest.<\/p>\n
We demand an end to all forms of harassment, intimidation, and politically motivated persecution of citizens.<\/p>\n
We call on all lovers of democracy, civil society organizations, and the international community to rise and condemn this alarming development. Silence in the face of oppression only emboldens tyranny.<\/p>\n
Nigeria\u2019s democracy must not be reduced to a system where citizens live in fear because of perceived political associations. We must collectively resist any attempt to erode our freedoms.<\/p>\n
