{"id":13354,"date":"2026-05-05T17:02:58","date_gmt":"2026-05-05T17:02:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dailyechoes.ng\/?p=13354"},"modified":"2026-05-05T17:02:58","modified_gmt":"2026-05-05T17:02:58","slug":"ogidi-killing-senate-demands-justice-mourns-victim","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dailyechoes.ng\/index.php\/2026\/05\/05\/ogidi-killing-senate-demands-justice-mourns-victim\/","title":{"rendered":"Ogidi Killing: Senate Demands Justice &#8230;&#8230; Mourns Victim"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By George Mgbeleke <\/p>\n<p>The Nigerian Senate on Tuesday called for thorough and conclusive justice following the killing of 28-year-old, Meneh Ogidi, who was allegedly shot by officers of the Nigerian Police Force.<\/p>\n<p>The call was made during plenary, where the Senate President of Nigeria conveyed condolences to the bereaved  Meneh Ogidi family and Nigerians affected by the tragic incident.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/dailyechoes.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/IMG-20260323-WA0023.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1152\" height=\"1440\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-12095\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dailyechoes.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/IMG-20260323-WA0023.jpg 1152w, https:\/\/dailyechoes.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/IMG-20260323-WA0023-240x300.jpg 240w, https:\/\/dailyechoes.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/IMG-20260323-WA0023-819x1024.jpg 819w, https:\/\/dailyechoes.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/IMG-20260323-WA0023-768x960.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1152px) 100vw, 1152px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Addressing lawmakers, the Senate President,Senator Godswill Akpabio stressed the sanctity of human life and the responsibility of the state to protect its citizens.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery Nigerian life is sacred, and the strength of our republic rests on the assurance that citizens are protected under the law,\u201d he said. \u201cPublic trust demands that state authority be exercised with restraint, not impunity, and that justice must be swift, fair, and certain.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Senate acknowledged steps already taken by the police, including the identification, dismissal, and initiation of legal proceedings against the officers involved.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe note the prompt actions taken by the Nigerian Police Force in identifying and dismissing the officers and commencing legal action,\u201d the Senate President stated. \u201cHowever, this commendable beginning must culminate in conclusive justice through a transparent and diligent process.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lawmakers emphasized the need for accountability within law enforcement, insisting that professionalism and respect for human rights must remain non-negotiable.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLaw enforcement agencies must be empowered, but they must also be held firmly to account,\u201d he added. \u201cNo individual, whether in authority or not, is above the law, and no citizen is beneath its protection.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Senate also directed Senator Ide Davinone, who represents the affected constituency, to formally convey the chamber\u2019s condolences to the Biri family.<\/p>\n<p>In its resolution, the upper chamber urged relevant authorities to pursue the case to its logical conclusion while ensuring that ongoing police reforms are fully implemented to prevent future occurrences.<\/p>\n<p>The Senate observed a minute of silence in honour of the late Ogidi, with lawmakers reaffirming their commitment to building a just society.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe must continue to strive for a nation where justice knows no bias, institutions command trust, and every Nigerian lives free of fear,\u201d the Senate President said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By George Mgbeleke The Nigerian Senate on Tuesday called for thorough and conclusive justice following the killing of 28-year-old, Meneh Ogidi, who was allegedly shot by officers of the Nigerian Police Force.
