The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Federal Government, and all state governors to urgently heed the grave warning issued by former Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Tukur Yusuf Buratai (Rtd.), regarding the worsening state of insecurity in Nigeria.<\/p>\n
HURIWA in a statement signed by National Coordinator,Comrade Emmanuel Nnadozie Onwubiko believes that General Buratai spoke not as a politician but as a statesman, a patriot, and a nationalist whose decades of military experience have given him a deep understanding of the security architecture of Nigeria. His intervention should not be dismissed or politicized. Rather, it should serve as a wake-up call to the nation’s leadership.<\/p>\n
The warning by General Buratai that ministers, senators, governors, and other top public officials could soon become targets of terrorists, insurgents, and bandits if the current security trajectory continues is both profound and alarming. Coming after the reported abduction and killing of a senior military officer, Major General Rabe Abubakar, the statement underscores the frightening reality that criminal elements are becoming increasingly emboldened and capable of challenging the authority of the Nigerian state.<\/p>\n
HURIWA agrees with General Buratai that Nigeria has reached a critical point where insecurity can no longer be treated as a routine governance challenge. It has become a full-scale national emergency requiring extraordinary and decisive action.<\/p>\n
Consequently, HURIWA demands the immediate declaration of a National Security Emergency across the federation. The organization further calls for a comprehensive review of the nation’s security leadership, including the immediate dismissal of all security chiefs whose performance has failed to produce measurable progress in the fight against terrorism, insurgency, banditry, kidnapping, and other violent crimes.<\/p>\n
In particular, HURIWA believes that the National Security Adviser, the Inspector-General of Police, and other key security officials must be subjected to an objective performance assessment. Where incompetence, inefficiency, or failure is established, such officials should be replaced without delay in the overriding national interest.<\/p>\n
The rights group also strongly supports General Buratai’s call for a more aggressive military and intelligence strategy against terrorists and bandits. HURIWA reiterates its longstanding position that the policy of negotiating with terrorists, rehabilitating violent extremists, and reintegrating them into society without adequate accountability has failed to deter criminality and may have inadvertently encouraged impunity.<\/p>\n
Nigeria must immediately halt all programmes that prioritize the rehabilitation and reintegration of terrorists while thousands of innocent citizens remain displaced, traumatized, widowed, orphaned, or murdered by the same criminal elements. The primary duty of government is to protect law-abiding citizens and uphold justice.<\/p>\n
Furthermore, HURIWA calls for the declaration of a total and uncompromising war against terrorism, banditry, insurgency, and all forms of violent criminality threatening the unity and survival of Nigeria. This effort must include dismantling the financial, logistical, and intelligence networks that sustain criminal groups across the country.<\/p>\n
The association is particularly concerned about persistent allegations of procurement corruption within the defence and security sectors. HURIWA urges the Federal Government to thoroughly investigate and eliminate all forms of corruption associated with military procurement, intelligence funding, and security contracts. Resources meant for the protection of Nigerians must never be diverted by corrupt officials and contractors.<\/p>\n
According to HURIWA, no security strategy can succeed where corruption undermines operational readiness, compromises troop welfare, weakens intelligence gathering, and deprives frontline personnel of critical equipment.<\/p>\n
The organization warns that if the scenario painted by General Buratai begins to unfold, Nigeria could face an unprecedented security catastrophe capable of undermining constitutional democracy itself. The targeting of top government officials by terrorists and bandits would signify a dangerous collapse of state authority and could plunge the nation into a state of widespread instability and conflict.<\/p>\n
HURIWA therefore urges President Tinubu, the National Assembly, state governors, security agencies, and all relevant stakeholders to act decisively before the current security crisis degenerates into a full-scale national emergency beyond the control of existing institutions.<\/p>\n
General Buratai’s warning must not be treated as another routine intervention. It is a patriotic alarm from a former military commander who understands the devastating consequences of inaction. Nigeria cannot afford to ignore such counsel.<\/p>\n
