The Independent National Electoral Commission on Tuesday moved to stop the deregistration of the African Democratic Congress and four other Political parties, throwing its weight behind their appeal against a controversial Federal High Court judgment that ordered their removal from Nigeria\u2019s political landscape.<\/p>\n
Court of Appeal in Abuja that it supports an application seeking a stay of execution of the judgment delivered by Justice Peter Lifu.<\/p>\n
The electoral body further revealed that it was \u201cshocked\u201d by the judgment, insisting that the lower court proceeded despite an earlier order of the appellate court restraining the delivery of the verdict.<\/p>\n
Adressing a three-member panel of justices through its counsel, Mr. Haliru Mohammed, INEC disclosed that it was never informed that the judgment would be delivered and only became aware of the decision through media reports.<\/p>\n
\u201cMy Lords, we are aware of an order that this court made on May 22, which stopped the delivery of the judgment of the lower court, which was initially reserved for delivery on June 5,\u201d the Commission stated.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe were not aware of any notice from the court regarding the delivery of the judgment. We only saw it as breaking news in the media.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Commission\u2019s position marks a dramatic twist in the high-stakes legal dispute that has generated widespread political interest ahead of the 2027 general elections.<\/p>\n
