The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Olaka Nwogu, winner of Saturday\u2019s by-election for the Rivers South-East Senatorial District seat. <\/p>\n
The June 20 bye-election which was contested in seven local government areas that make up the Rivers South-East District including; Khana, Gokana, Tai, Eleme, Andoni. Oyigbo and Opobo, had only four political parties and their candidates cleared by the INEC to contest the seat which became vacant following the death of Senator Barry Barinada Mpigi in February 2026.<\/p>\n
Announcing the result at the INEC collation centre in Bori, Khana Local Government Area, the Returning Officer, Professor Rosemary Ogu of the University of Port Harcourt, said Olaka Nwogu, a close ally of the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, who is the PDP candidate secured 47,961 votes out of the 51,150 valid votes cast across the district\u2019s seven local government areas to emerge winner of the poll.<\/p>\n
Prof. Ogu said, “The candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Osarosaka Erewari, came second with 1,647 votes, Douglas Fabeke of the Action Alliance (AA) came third with 1,175 votes, while the Labour Party (LP) candidate, Sam Kinanee Barikpoa, polled 367 votes.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe election was contested. The candidates received the following votes. Douglass Fabeke, Male of the political party, AA, received a total of 1175. OsaroKaka Ebenezer Erewar, male, of the APC political party, 1647 votes. Sam Kinani, male, of the LP political party, 367 votes. Nwogu Olaka Johnson, male, of the PDP political party, 47961 votes.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat Nwogu Olaka Johnson of the PDP, having satisfied the requirements of the law, is hereby declared the winner and is returned elected.\u201d<\/p>\n
INEC however, said it is putting measures in place to address incidents glitches arising from the Bimodal Voters Accreditation System, BVAS, that occured during the exercise in order to ensure a smooth electoral process, going forward.<\/p>\n
The Head of Department, Voter Education in INEC, Rivers State, Geraldine Ekelemu, disclosed this while speaking with newsmen during an inspection tour of some participating LGAs in the Senatorial District alongside the INEC National Commissioner representing the South-South, May Mbu.<\/p>\n
She said INEC made provisions for backup B-VAS machines, saying the devices can be reconfigured in cases where the primary B-VAS malfunctions.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
