Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has extended the deadline for the submission of lists and personal particulars of candidates by political parties for the 2027 Presidential and National Assembly elections, following an appeal by the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC).<\/p>\n
The electoral umpire announced that the submission deadline, which was initially fixed for Saturday, July 11, 2026, has now been extended to midnight on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, to enable political parties complete the nomination process for their candidates.<\/p>\n
INEC said the extension became necessary after several political parties, through IPAC, requested additional time to upload the names and credentials of their candidates on the Commission’s dedicated nomination portal.<\/p>\n
The decision was conveyed in a statement issued on Sunday by the National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Kudu Haruna.<\/p>\n
According to the Commission, the extension demonstrates its commitment to promoting inclusiveness, fairness and equal participation in the electoral process while ensuring strict compliance with the provisions of the Electoral Act and the approved timetable for the 2027 General Election.<\/p>\n
“The deadline for submission in the Revised Timetable and Schedule of Activities for the 2027 General Election, being Saturday, 11th July, 2026, has been extended to midnight on Tuesday, 14th July, 2026,” the statement said.<\/p>\n
INEC explained that the adjustment followed an appeal by the Inter-Party Advisory Council on behalf of political parties that were unable to upload the names and personal particulars of their candidates within the stipulated period.
\nThe Commission urged all political parties to make effective use of the extension, stressing that no further opportunity may be available after the expiration of the new deadline.<\/p>\n
It advised parties to ensure that all required information and supporting documents are correctly uploaded before midnight on Tuesday to avoid disqualification arising from non-compliance with the electoral timetable.
\nThe extension is expected to ease pressure on political parties still finalising their internal nomination processes and candidate documentation ahead of the 2027 General Election.<\/p>\n
Political observers believe the additional three-day window will enable parties to resolve outstanding administrative issues and ensure that all nominated candidates are duly captured in INEC’s records, thereby reducing the likelihood of disputes over compliance with nomination requirements.<\/p>\n
