Henry Ola Ekundayo, the former Director General of the Akpatason Campaign Organisation during the 2023 House of Representatives election. His resignation is widely seen by political observers as a significant blow to the APC in Akoko-Edo, given his prominent role in the party’s previous electioneering efforts.

Other party members who have reportedly left the APC to join the African Democratic Congress (ADC) include Juliet Perebo, Hon. Sunday Afowosoro, Ms. Judith Ife, and Nelson Ayodele, with indications that more resignations may follow in the coming days.

The growing exodus has heightened concerns over the internal cohesion of the party, as many of the defectors attribute their decision to what they described as the absence of internal democracy, lack of transparency, and the alleged sidelining of loyal party faithful in favour of moneyed new entrants.

According to the aggrieved former members, individuals who stood by the APC during its most challenging periods and invested personal resources in building the party were overlooked during the recent primary elections, while newcomers with greater financial influence allegedly secured the party’s tickets.

The defectors maintained that the opinions of grassroots members no longer carry weight in the party’s decision-making process, accusing some leaders of sacrificing merit and loyalty for personal interests.

One of the resignation letters obtained by our correspondent was written by Mr. Obayayi Shedrack Ojo of Unit 03, Ward 03, Lampese, who tendered his immediate resignation in a strongly worded letter dated July 14, 2026.

In the letter, Ojo stated that after extensive consultations with his family and supporters, as well as several sleepless nights, he concluded that the APC in Akoko-Edo had reduced internal democracy to “theory only,” alleging that fairness, transparency, and inclusion had become mere slogans.

Employing satire, he wrote that he joined the party to contribute to its growth rather than applaud decisions taken without the participation of ordinary members, likening the APC to “a private WhatsApp group” where major decisions were taken by a select few.

In another resignation letter dated July 14, 2026, Mr. Vincent Friday (popularly known as CSO) of Unit 25, Ward 4, also formally resigned his membership of the APC.

Addressing his letter to the APC Ward Chairman, Vincent stated that after careful consideration, he had decided to leave the party. While he described his decision as being for “personal reasons,” he thanked the leadership and members of the APC for the opportunity to serve within the party and requested that his name be removed from the party’s membership register.

The series of resignations has fueled speculation that the APC in Akoko-Edo may be facing one of its most serious internal crises in recent years, with analysts warning that the continued loss of experienced members could have significant political consequences if reconciliation efforts are not urgently pursued.

As of the time of filing this report, the APC leadership in Akoko-Edo had not issued an official response to the resignations or the allegations raised by the former members.

Political observers are closely watching developments, as more members are reportedly considering leaving the party, raising fresh questions about the APC’s unity and preparedness ahead of future elections.

End

By Jonas Ezieke Abuja with agency report A wave of defections is sweeping through the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Akoko-Edo Local Government Area of Edo State, with several party members, including prominent stakeholders, resigning from the party following the conduct of its recent primary elections.
