Residents of Sagbama Constituency 2 in Bayelsa State have spoken with one voice to condemn what they described as an unlawful plot to remove their daughter, Hon. Mrs. Alice Tangi Allen, the Executive Chairman of Sagbama Local Government Council.<\/p>\n
Contained in a press statement signed by the chief press secretary to the Sagbama local government area Executive chairman,Comrade ThankGod O Ebilamowei ,the community leaders, women groups, and youths who spoke in anger, said the Sagbama Council Chairman enjoys massive grassroots support and should be allowed to complete the tenure the people freely gave her through their votes.<\/p>\n
“Our chairman is loved in the creeks because she has made her office accessible to the people and she is delivering on their needs,” they intoned.<\/p>\n
They went further to say that any attempt to cut short her tenure would be a direct infringement on democracy.<\/p>\n
According to them, Democracy thrives on the choices of the people, not on force, threats, or political intimidation.”<\/p>\n
The residents reaffirmed their unalloyed loyalty to the Sagbama Council Chairman, describing her leadership as people-centered and responsive to their challenges<\/p>\n
They said, removing an elected officer outside constitutional due process or through financial inducement comes with serious consequences, continuing that impeachment is a constitutional tool, not a political weapon,using it to settle political scores undermines the mandate given by voters and sets a precedent that no elected official is safe.<\/p>\n
According to them, it also brings instability in governance, meaning that abrupt removal of council leadership disrupts projects, stalls service delivery and creates a vacuum that deepens hardship.<\/p>\n
In furtherance, the people of the creek said, it would also cause breakdown of rule of law, adding that towing unlawful steps encourages impunity.<\/p>\n
The residents equally condemned the use of intimidation, duress, frustration tactics, and other forms of coercion to compel people to support a party or candidate they do not believe in.<\/p>\n
They noted that such tactics are anti-democratic and harmful because they
