The Anglican Diocese of Calabar has delivered a stinging critique of Nigeria’s political and moral state, with Bishop Rt. Rev. Prof. Nneoyi Onen Egbe describing the country as a “two-tier nation” where elites live in comfort while the masses struggle for survival.<\/p>\n
Speaking at the 3rd Session of the 12th Synod 2026, held recently at the Holy Trinity Anglican Communion, the Bishop addressed hundreds of clergymen, senior citizens, and royal fathers. The Synod’s theme, “Not Offended in Me” (Matthew 11:6), set the tone for a message heavy on repentance and national rebirth.<\/p>\n
The Bishop’s analysis of Nigeria was unsparing. He identified two distinct tiers within the country.<\/p>\n
“The first tier is the self-sufficient Nigeria, characterised by solar energy, private security, controlled systems, and comfort,” he said. “The political class and few of the private sector cronies of theirs live in this tier.”<\/p>\n
The second tier, he said, is “Nigeria of survival,” marked by darkness, bad roads, insecurity, poor healthcare, and uncertainty\u2014where the large majority of Nigerians live.<\/p>\n
“What do we observe?” the Bishop asked. “Nigerians are trapped in the tragedy of normalising evil and dishonesty. Nigerians are not angry at the evil around us, but are angry because they are not included in the benefitting few.”<\/p>\n
He accused leaders of prioritising their own problems over national issues, citing Aso Rock’s dependence on solar power while the national grid remains dysfunctional. <\/p>\n
“They have chosen to insulate themselves from what is happening rather than engineer transformation of the nation,” he added.<\/p>\n
Governor Prince Bassey Edet Otu received both praise and criticism. The Bishop commended the governor’s approach to governance, youth employment, road construction, aviation improvements, and the purchase of three planes for Cally Air.<\/p>\n
He also acknowledged efforts to recover oil wells, renovate public schools, develop agriculture, and improve security.<\/p>\n
“With one hand we say thank you, with the other we say the work has just begun,” the Bishop said.<\/p>\n
The Bishop expressed displeasure over the handpicking of candidates for elective positions, describing it as a “theft of the people’s will.”<\/p>\n
He also criticised the governor for celebrating his 3rd anniversary in Abuja instead of Calabar.<\/p>\n
“We advise your Excellency against playing politics with governance,” the Bishop stated. “We hope this will not happen again. We will also appreciate you spending more time at home.”<\/p>\n
The Synod communique took a firm stand against integrating Sharia financial systems into Nigeria’s financial regulations.<\/p>\n
“This move will not enhance clarity, credibility, accountability, or transparency as claimed,” the communique read. <\/p>\n
“We again say NO to Islamisation of our country. We cannot continue this dance of death with the deliberate intention to Islamise this nation.”<\/p>\n
The Synod called on Christians to return to God in genuine repentance, confessing modern-day idolatries including self, money, status, pleasure, fashion, technology, and human rights.
\nIt warned believers against slipping into these forms of worship “occasioned by the subtility through which commitment to God is lost.”<\/p>\n
The Synod recommended that political appointees emerge from a college of religious and traditional leaders across the nation. <\/p>\n
It argued that a presidential appointee as INEC chair “will always be a stooge.” The Synod called for emphasis on merit, ability, and residence over ethnicity and place of origin.<\/p>\n
“We need technocrats to run our economy, not politicians,” the communique stated.<\/p>\n
The Synod also urged stronger border controls, noting recent claims that many terror attacks are carried out by non-Nigerians. “Should we not know who has entered into or lives the country as well as what such people do?” it asked.<\/p>\n
The Synod expressed delight at positive developments in the Diocese, including the establishment of a printing press, scholarships for indigent children, building a house for a widow, provision of boreholes in underserved communities, economic empowerment programs, and the reroofing of an elderly man’s home damaged by a storm. <\/p>\n
The Synod commended the three Senators from Cross River State for their developmental strides across the senatorial districts and encouraged them to sustain the tempo.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
