{"id":1704,"date":"2025-02-04T05:51:24","date_gmt":"2025-02-04T05:51:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dailyechoes.ng\/?p=1704"},"modified":"2025-02-04T05:51:24","modified_gmt":"2025-02-04T05:51:24","slug":"council-boss-bans-use-of-weapons-attack-on-women-by-masquerades-during-festivities","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dailyechoes.ng\/index.php\/2025\/02\/04\/council-boss-bans-use-of-weapons-attack-on-women-by-masquerades-during-festivities\/","title":{"rendered":"Council boss bans use of weapons, attack on women by masquerades during festivities\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\u00a0By Our Reporter<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">The Igbo-Etiti Local Government Area of Enugu State has banned masquerades in the area from carrying weapons, including canes, and vowed to deal with any masquerade that violates the order during festivities.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">The council also warned masquerades to stop chasing, attacking or flogging women, girls, and perceived enemies.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">The council chairman, Dr Eric Odo, gave the warning on Monday during the monthly Holy Mass at the Council\u2019s Headquarters in Ogbede.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">Odo emphasised that the current administration had established measures to curb the violent actions of masquerades, who had been causing harm to innocent citizens in the area.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">He noted that out that some of these violent incidents had led to untimely deaths of many, while others were battling life-threatening injuries.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">While reiterating that masquerades are not banned in the LGA, the council chairman stated emphatically that their activities must be conducted in an orderly, civil and acceptable manner.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">According to him, the government will not sit down and watch masquerades, whether Odoh, Akatakpa, or Omaba continue to harass our people, particularly women and girls.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\u201cWe have inaugurated a committee to address domestic, sexual, and gender-based violence, and it will take action against the harm caused by these masquerades.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\u201cIt is our responsibility as the government to protect the lives and property of the people. As such, my government will carry out this responsibility to the latter.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\u201cWe will go to any length to curtail the excesses of these masquerades, including enacting a law and also jailing any masquerade who defaults the order.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\u201cThe fight against domestic and gender-based violence requires the collective effort of everyone to enable the fight to be successful,\u201d Odo said.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">Earlier, the Priest-in-Charge of St. Agnes Catholic Church, Rev. Fr.
