{"id":203,"date":"2024-06-07T10:07:59","date_gmt":"2024-06-07T10:07:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dailyechoes.ng\/?p=203"},"modified":"2024-06-07T10:07:59","modified_gmt":"2024-06-07T10:07:59","slug":"minimum-wagegovernors-reject-n100000-proposal-suggest-n70000-instead","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dailyechoes.ng\/index.php\/2024\/06\/07\/minimum-wagegovernors-reject-n100000-proposal-suggest-n70000-instead\/","title":{"rendered":"Minimum wage:Governors Reject N100,000 Proposal, Suggest N70,000 Instead\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By Our Reporter<\/p>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">As Nigerians await the outcome of negotiation between organized Labour and government representatives, Governors from Nigeria&#8217;s 36 states of the Federation have collectively maintained that a minimum wage higher than N70,000 will be unaffordable and unsustainable.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">This resolution of the governors was arrived at a Meeting held by the state chief Executives under the Nigeria Governors\u2019 Forum (NGF), where they discussed the country&#8217;s economic challenges and the ongoing minimum wage debate.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">Consequently, Options\u00a0 considered by the governor\u00a0 ranged from N60,000, previously offered to Labour by the Federal Government, to N70,000, currently implemented by Edo State.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\u00a0However, the governors failed to reach a consensus on a uniform minimum wage. They have established a committee, led by Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma, to review these options and provide recommendations.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">Sources at the meeting revealed that the governors agreed that a N100,000 minimum wage is unfeasible, especially since some states are struggling to pay the current N30,000 wage, implemented in 2019. In fact, some states are still paying the previous N18,000 minimum wage.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">&#8220;Records show that some states are unable to afford even the N30,000 minimum wage, with only one state adopting a N70,000 wage,&#8221; a source disclosed.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">This stance aligns with a prior statement by NGF Chairman and Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, who emphasized that states would only agree to a minimum wage that is &#8220;affordable and sustainable.&#8221;<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">Meanwhile, the Presidency has denied reports claiming that Finance Minister Wale Edun proposed a new minimum wage of N105,000 to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
