{"id":2189,"date":"2025-02-21T07:10:15","date_gmt":"2025-02-21T07:10:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dailyechoes.ng\/?p=2189"},"modified":"2025-02-21T07:10:15","modified_gmt":"2025-02-21T07:10:15","slug":"at-last-ibb-declares-abiola-winner-of-june-12-election-should-also-admit-prof-nwosu-conducted-transparent-election-chief-chekwas-okorie","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dailyechoes.ng\/index.php\/2025\/02\/21\/at-last-ibb-declares-abiola-winner-of-june-12-election-should-also-admit-prof-nwosu-conducted-transparent-election-chief-chekwas-okorie\/","title":{"rendered":"At last, IBB declares\u00a0 Abiola winner of\u00a0 June 12 election\u00a0 &#8230;&#8230;. should also admit Prof.Nwosu conducted transparent election-Chief Chekwas Okorie\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<div dir=\"auto\">\n<h1><\/h1>\n<div dir=\"auto\">By George Mgbeleke<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<p>Former Military President, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida [IBB] has made a significant disclosure that verged on the validation of the outcome of the annulled June 12, 1993 presidential election.<\/p>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\n<div dir=\"auto\">He took three opportunity of the public presentation of his autobiography to confirm that the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola, who had, up until now, been referred to as the presumed winner of the election, actually was the winner of the poll.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><span style=\"color: #222222;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\n<div id=\"attachment_2191\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2191\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2191\" src=\"https:\/\/dailyechoes.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Screenshot_20250221-073829_1-300x273.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"273\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dailyechoes.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Screenshot_20250221-073829_1-300x273.jpg 300w, https:\/\/dailyechoes.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/Screenshot_20250221-073829_1.jpg 720w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-2191\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Chief MKO Abiola casting his vote at Presidential election that gave him victory<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\n<div dir=\"auto\">This disclosure, which is documented in his autobiography-\u201cA Journey in Service,\u201d which was officially launched in Abuja on Thursday, has settled the contentious question in his life and times.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\n<p>\u00a0It is instructive that IBB has chosen not to go to his grave with this significant validation\/ confirmation.<\/p>\n<p>The book reviewer, former Vice President Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, captured Babangida\u2019s affirmation that Abiola, who contested on the platform of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), secured both the majority of votes and the required geographical spread to be declared president.<\/p>\n<p>Babangida was quoted to have described the annulment of the election as the most difficult decision of his career.<\/p>\n<p>He stated, \u201cThere was no doubt in my mind; MKO Abiola won the election. He satisfied all the requirements.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, Babangida expressed satisfaction that President Muhammadu Buhari posthumously recognized Abiola\u2019s victory by awarding him the prestigious Grand Commander of the Federal Republic (GCFR) title, which is reserved for Presidents.<\/p>\n<p>Reacting to IBB&#8217;s confession in a phone interview with Daily Echoes Media, Pioneer chairman of All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA)Chief Chekwas Okorie\u00a0 congratulated General IBB for confirming Chief MKO Abiola as winner of June 12 presidential election<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\n<div dir=\"auto\">&#8220;Let me say that it is a vindication of Professor Humphrey Nwosu, former INEC chairman,who is yet to be thanked for conducting a transparent election and announced the right result but had to go through all sorts of humiliation.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">&#8220;It is also a vindication that the late MKO Abiola truly won the election and the peoples mandate for him was denied.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">&#8220;The third one is that all those who protested and demonstrated and some of who died in the process of defending Chief Abiola&#8217;s mandate died for a good course because they died defending the truth..<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">&#8220;Now having said that, I will proceed to say that IBB should thank his God that he lived long enough to have the courage to own up to what he did that was obviously wrong,&#8221; he said.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">Chief Okorie further said,&#8221;He accepted responsibility being the commander- in-Chief of the Armed Forces at the time and he said he regretted it based on his words.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">&#8220;He further said that if what happened were to happen again his actions would have been different.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">&#8220;All these are statements of fact and I happy that he was able to do it while he is still alive. It is left for God who has the ultimate power to forgive to forgive him and that also is a lesson to everybody that the only thing\u00a0 that can never perish is the truth. It doesn&#8217;t matter how long it takes, even if you try to bury the truth sometime either in your life time or later the truth will still speak out and that is what happened today.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">&#8220;So, very historic thing happened. In the book itself which I will try and lay hands on.
