He alleged that his client was a victim of police extortion and wrongful detention.

According to the petition, a police officer identified as Rafiu, under the supervision of SP Aliyu Kuta, allegedly demanded the sum of ₦500,000 from Dogoh. Following negotiations, Dogoh was forced to pay ₦50,000, which was transferred through a Point of Sale (POS) account provided by Officer Rafiu.

Barrister Joseph Godwin Igboche, explained that the case involved a Toyota Corolla car that his client legally purchased from a car stand in Kubwa, Abuja. Dogoh reportedly completed the change of ownership process with all necessary documents. However, an error made by the Vehicle Inspection Office (VIO) was yet to be corrected at the time of registration in 2025.

Upon visiting the VIO office for the correction, Dogoh was informed that the vehicle had been flagged as stolen. He complied with their request to return to the office, only to be arrested by officers from ‘B’ Division of the Niger State Police Command. His original documents were confiscated and transferred to SP Aliyu Kuta’s office.

The lawyer expressed concerns over the handling of the investigation by SP Kuta, alleging a lack of integrity and professionalism. He stated that despite repeated requests, neither the police nor the VIO officials had presented the complainant who reported the car as stolen. Instead, the police continued to demand 500,000 from Dogoh, out of which 50,000 had already been paid through POS.

Barrister Joseph Godwin disclosed that he had submitted a formal petition on February 7, 2025, requesting a fair investigation. However, when the commissioner summoned a meeting on February 13, the same day as the Bar-Bench Forum, Dogoh was made to wait for hours. Eventually, SP Kuta informed him that the commissioner was unavailable.

Shortly after Godwin Igboche left for the forum, his client was taken directly to the commissioner’s office. There, Dogoh was reportedly intimidated for filing a petition and was the only one detained, while others involved were released on bond. The lawyer condemned the act as an abuse of power and a violation of his client’s rights.

He further alleged that the real complainant may have sold the car and was now using the police to recover it fraudulently. He questioned why the complainant had not been presented and why Dogoh’s original documents had been seized.

Barrister Godwin called on the Police Service Commission to intervene immediately. He demanded that the case be transferred to a neutral department for proper investigation and that the complainant be publicly identified to ensure transparency in the matter.

However, in a swift reaction, the Commissioner of Police in Niger State, CP Ebenezer Shawulu, Danmaman, described the petitioner as a bunch of lier and malicious legal practitioners that his conduct in legal field is unethical and unprofessional.

CP Ebenezer Shawulu, who spoke to newsmen through the head of#the CP Monitoring squad SP Aliyu Ahmed Kuta, explained that the whole contents of the petition as written by the legal practitioner is far from the reality of his claims in the petition.

According to the head of the Monitoring squad, one Yakubu Dogo had approached the Bida office of the Vehicles Inspection Officer (VIO) to change some documents of the vehicle, “It was discovered that the name on the papers was not his name which informed the VIO to put a call to the rightful owner of the vehicle to confirm the truth owner of the vehicle.

” It was then the original owner of the vehicle confirmed that his vehicle was stolen two years back in Port Harcourt.

“The VIO informed him that the vehicle is currently in Niger State and some came to their office in Bida to change some documents. This is how the Police was invited to arrest the person that came to change the vehicle documents” he told Journalist.

However, the Police will now Transfer all the people involved in the case to River State for further investigation, ” Because the case was reported in one of the Divisional Police Command in River State”

By Uthman Baba-Al-Naseer- Minna A Minna based legal Practitioner Barrister Godwin Igboche Joseph,, has petitioned the Police Service Commission (PSC) to intervene in a case involving his client, Yakubu Dogoh, urging the transfer of the matter from the Niger State Police Commissioner to a competent and neutral authority for further investigation.
