The organization stated that if proven true, the claim would represent a serious abuse of power and a direct attack on the dignity and rights of women in leadership, governance, and decision-making roles.

“Sexual harassment within the corridors of power is not just a personal violation—it is an attack on gender equality, a form of gender-based violence, a betrayal of public trust, and a stain on the integrity of governance,” FIDA Nigeria stated. “It fosters a toxic culture where women in leadership face intimidation, coercion, and discrimination, which continue to hinder female participation in politics and governance.”

The women’s legal advocacy group condemned all forms of harassment and intimidation, stressing that justice must be served. It urged swift legal action to ensure that such injustices, when proven, do not go unpunished.

“This issue transcends politics; it is about law, justice, and fundamental human rights,” the statement continued. FIDA Nigeria cited constitutional provisions and legal frameworks, including the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act (VAPP) 2015, which criminalizes sexual harassment, intimidation, and abuse of authority. The organization also reminded the Nigerian government of its international obligations, including the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW), which mandates proactive measures against sexual harassment.

FIDA further called for an independent and transparent investigation into Senator Akpoti’s allegation, warning that silence or inaction would only embolden perpetrators and discourage victims from speaking out.

“The allegation is particularly disturbing as it comes from the legislative arm of government—a body responsible for making laws for the entire country. Justice must not only be done but must be seen to be done. Power should never shield misconduct, and no woman should be subjected to harassment, whether in politics, the workplace, or any sphere of society,” the statement added.

The organization also emphasized the need for protection against retaliation, ensuring that women who speak out do not face intimidation, political persecution, or career setbacks. It urged authorities to implement the 35% affirmative action for women in governance, moving from rhetoric to reality.

“We must create a political and institutional environment where no woman is forced to choose between her dignity and her ambition,” FIDA stated. “Women must be given the space to serve the country boldly and courageously.”

Reaffirming its zero-tolerance stance on abuse and gender-based violence, FIDA called on all relevant authorities, civil society organizations, the legal community, and the public to unite in demanding justice, accountability, and a safer Nigeria for women.

“Justice must prevail. The time for action is now,” the statement concluded.

By Uthman Baba-Al-Naseer- Minna The International Federation of Women Lawyers ( FIDA) has expressed deep concern over the recent sexual harassment allegation made by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan against the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio.
