There are strong indications that a large number of students from\u00a0 tertiary institutions in the country are venturing into survide mission as a result of depression from the current economic hardship in Nigeria.<\/div>\n

Daily Echoes Media survey reaveled a result of prevalent depression, 22.5 percent of the Lagos State University (LASU) and 21.6 percent of the defunct Lagos State Polytechnic, LASPOTECH are on the verge of committing suicide.<\/div>\n

Dr Oreoluwa Funnih, Special Adviser on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to the State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu further attested to this during the ongoing ministerial press briefing to mark the end year of the second term of the Governor in office, at Alausa, Ikeja.<\/div>\n

Finnish, who explained that the discovery was made almost four years ago, noted the agency is working towards addressing the disturbing trends.<\/div>\n

She added that out of 17 goals on SDGs, the Lagos government is focusing on 10 which include; poverty, quality education, clean water and sanitation, affordable and clean energy, decent work and economic growth, industry, innovation & infrastructure, responsible consumption, climate action, peace, justice & strong institutions and partnership for the goals.<\/div>\n

In her words: “Students across Nigerian tertiary institutions face stresses from academic pressures, social isolation, adjustment to university life, etc.<\/div>\n

“A research on students in Lagos State University (LASU) and Lagos State Polytechnic revealed the prevalence of depression and suicidal ideation being ~22.5% and 21.6% respectively.”<\/div>\n

She added, “The of\ufb01ce is working with LASU, LASUCOM and other tertiary institutions in Lagos towards creating a permanent centres for counseling of identi\ufb01ed students.”<\/div>\n

Finnish who stated that 10 percent of Lagosians live in signi\ufb01cantly undeserved and hard-to-reach communities, added, “Over 1,200 women in the five Divisions of the state have been empowered with \ufb01nancial literacy training. The of\ufb01ce has completed the Need assessment Survey in 5 Underserved communities.”<\/div>\n
