As ASUSS lauds FG for new admission requirement"},"content":{"rendered":"<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">By George Mgbeleke<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\u00a0Education Minister, Dr Tunji Alausa, has said that the federal government has pegged the minimum age for admission into tertiary institutions at 16 years.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">Alausa spoke in Abuja on Tuesday at the 2025 policy meeting of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\u201dThis policy decision reflects a balance between cognitive maturity and academic preparedness. 16 years is non-negotiable,\u201d he said.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">He noted that provisions existed for clearly documented and justified exceptions like gifted children with accelerated educational progress.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">He warned institutions against attempting to circumvent the rule by altering age records, stressing that such acts would attract sanctions.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">The minister also unveiled new measures to curb the scourge of examination malpractices, which he described as a \u201ccancer\u201d undermining merit and eroding confidence in Nigeria\u2019s education system.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">He announced the establishment of a Central Examination Malpractice Unit within the Federal Ministry of Education, noting that that would be chaired by the Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Abel Enitan.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">He added that the unit would serve as a national clearing house for documenting and reporting malpractices cases across all levels of education.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\u201cThis central database will be accessible to all institutions. It is our hope that this will reduce the tendency to engage in malpractices, as offenders will be appropriately tried under the Exam Malpractices Act,\u201d the minister said.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">He also confirmed the government\u2019s support for WAEC and NECO to adopt computer-based testing to curb malpractices.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">Meanwhile the\u00a0 Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools (ASUSS), in Osun State has commended the Federal Government for pegging the minimum age for admission into tertiary institutions at 16 years.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">Recall that the Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, during the 2025 policy meeting of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB, pegged the minimum age for admission into tertiary institutions at 16 years.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">Reacting via a phone conversation with our correspondent in Osogbo, on Tuesday, the State Chairman, ASUSS, Adediran Segun,said the move will prevent students from being exposed to different social vices.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">He however, urged parents to be patient with the system, stressing the country&#8217;s educational structure has been programmed in a way that will not allow students below 16 years to pursue admission at higher institutions.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">He said, \u201c I commend the Federal Government for taking sure decision.
