The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Monday hosted a high-powered delegation from the National Election Board of Ethiopia (NEBE) and the Coalition of Ethiopian Civil Society Organisations for Elections (CECOE), led by Mr. Tesfaye Neway, Deputy Chairman of NEBE.<\/p>\n

The visit marks the beginning of a one-week working exchange aimed at strengthening democratic institutions and promoting credible elections across Africa.<\/p>\n

Receiving the delegation at INEC headquarters in Abuja, the Commission\u2019s Chairman,\u00a0Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, underscored the importance of continental cooperation in advancing electoral governance and institutional capacity.<\/p>\n

He disclosed that the week-long visit would feature nine technical sessions covering the entire Nigerian electoral process\u2014from planning, voter registration, and technology deployment to stakeholder engagement and election monitoring.<\/p>\n

\u201cINEC and NEBE share similar constitutional responsibilities. Over the next week, we will share various aspects of the Nigerian experience in conducting elections, including innovations in technology, inclusivity, and stakeholder engagement,\u201d Prof. Yakubu said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis visit is happening at a time when voter registration is ongoing in the Federal Capital Territory ahead of the February 2026 FCT Area Council Elections, giving our guests the chance to observe real-time voter registration,” he noted.<\/p>\n

Prof. Yakubu expressed gratitude to the German Agency for International Development in Ethiopia for facilitating the visit, assuring the Ethiopian delegation of a productive and interactive engagement.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe believe that through collaboration, our institutions can learn from each other to deliver more credible and transparent elections,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Speaking on behalf of NEBE, Deputy Chairman Mr. Tesfaye Neway described the visit as an important opportunity to deepen institutional learning and foster strategic partnerships among African electoral bodies.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur presence here is part of an experience and exposure visit aimed at building strategic partnerships between our institutions.<\/p>\n

“We believe democracy grows stronger when institutions learn from one another,\u201d Mr. Neway said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe hope to learn from Nigeria\u2019s innovations in voter registration, electoral technology, civic education, and stakeholder engagement while also sharing the challenges we face, such as electoral violence and misinformation.\u201d<\/p>\n

Also speaking, the Executive Director of CECOE, Mr. Abera Hailemariam, highlighted the crucial role of civil society in strengthening electoral integrity and voter education across diverse communities.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe value this partnership and look forward to deeper cooperation between NEBE and INEC, with support from development partners. We are especially interested in how Nigeria conducts voter education in diverse languages,\u201d Mr. Hailemariam remarked.<\/p>\n

The visit, facilitated under a strategic knowledge exchange framework, is expected to deepen mutual understanding and enhance technical collaboration between both institutions.<\/p>\n
