Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, stated that there was no reason for the protest, urging organisers to focus on various government policies designed to improve their circumstances. \u201cThe government of President Bola Tinubu is committed to ensuring peace, unity, and prosperity for all,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>IGP Orders Tight Security<\/p>\n<p>In light of the planned protests, Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun has ordered a heightened security presence nationwide to ensure a safe environment for citizens during the Independence Day celebrations. The IGP&#8217;s directive, communicated through Force Public Relations Officer Olumuyiwa Adejobi, emphasized the deployment of human and tactical resources to guarantee security across major venues and highways.<\/p>\n<p>Assistant Inspector-General of Police for Zone 7, AIG Benneth I Gwen, announced that no protests would be allowed in Abuja due to the lack of formal applications for protest from any groups. He highlighted intelligence indicating that certain factions might attempt unauthorized demonstrations in the FCT.<\/p>\n<p>Protest Remains On Despite Police Stance<\/p>\n<p>Notwithstanding police warnings and alleged intimidation, Omoyele Sowore, convener of the #RevolutionNow movement, affirmed that the protest would proceed. He asserted that \u201conly a revolution would save the country,\u201d emphasizing the necessity for citizens to voice their grievances against economic hardship and insecurity.<\/p>\n<p>Civil society organisations (CSOs) in Edo State were reportedly divided on the protest&#8217;s execution, while coordinators across 19 northern states withdrew, citing security concerns. Meanwhile, the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) advised against involvement in any protests that could disrupt port operations.<\/p>\n<p>No Room for Protests in Abuja<\/p>\n<p>AIG Igweh reiterated the government&#8217;s stance on maintaining order during the Independence Day celebration. He urged potential protesters to respect the law, emphasizing that protests could only occur within legal frameworks. The police command has strategically deployed personnel and anti-riot equipment throughout Abuja to ensure a secure environment.<\/p>\n<p>Sowore Calls for a New Independence<\/p>\n<p>Sowore clarified that the protest aimed to challenge not just the historical independence from British rule in 1960 but also the current internal governance issues, framing it as a quest for fresh independence from what he terms \u201cinternal colonizers.\u201d He emphasized the intent behind the protest was to demand accountability rather than engage in dialogue with government officials.<\/p>\n<p>Northern Coordinators Withdraw<\/p>\n<p>Just before the protest, coordinators of the #EndBadGovernance initiative in the north expressed their withdrawal from the planned actions, citing safety concerns for participants and a lack of adequate security measures in place to protect protesters.<\/p>\n<p>Civil Society Divisions in Edo State<\/p>\n<p>In Edo State, civil society groups exhibited mixed feelings regarding participation in the protest. Some groups expressed support, while others opted to abstain, preferring a focus on peace following recent tensions from the governorship election.<\/p>\n<p>Maritime Union Stresses Non-Participation<\/p>\n<p>MWUN reiterated its non-involvement in the protests, urging its members to continue delivering essential services and avoid disruptions that could affect Nigeria&#8217;s economy.<\/p>\n<p>Kano Police Heighten Security Measures<\/p>\n<p>In Kano, the police command announced enhanced security measures in anticipation of both the Independence Day celebration and planned protests.
