Barely 24 hours after the Enugu State governor, Peter Mbah defected to All Progressives Congress (APC) with his entire cabinet,governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa State has resigned his membership of the Peoples’ Democratic Party with 19 members of the state House of Assembly.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
This is as former governor of Bayelsa State, Senator Henry Siraki Disckson has declared is resolved to remain with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) despite all odds noting that a country without opposition is dictatorship.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Meanwhile, governor Diri made this declaration at the State Executive Council Meeting at the Government House in Yenagoa on Wednesday.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
This as 19 Members of the State House of Assembly from the PDP alongside the Speaker, Mr. Abraham Ingobere have equally resigned their membership of the PDP.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
The Chief Press Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr. Daniel Alabrah confirmed the development in a post on his verified Social Media handle.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Members of the State Executive Council have also resigned membership of the PDP.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Reacting to the development, former governor of Bayelsa State a serving member of the Senate, Senator Henry Siraki Disckson<\/div>\n
Said since he left office, “unlike others, I have not played godfather. I made no requests, no demands, no pressure. I have only been available for consultation and advice. In this case, the governor consulted me several times, to his credit. I was not convinced because I saw no compelling reason for a second-term governor to defect.<\/div>\n

“We all know the PDP has issues, but those issues should be solved by its leaders. They are the ones who created them.”<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Continuing Senator Disckson said, ” I remain standing in the PDP\u2014the party that gave my people and the Niger Delta the opportunity to produce a Vice President, an Acting President, and a President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. This other party cannot do that.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
“If, however, we do not succeed in saving the PDP, then we will be part of a collective decision\u2014but that should not be to join the ruling party. I believe there must always be opposition. A democracy without opposition ceases to be democracy; it becomes dictatorship and totalitarianism.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
“Being in opposition does not mean fighting the government. Here I am, supporting the President\u2019s nomination because it is his constitutional duty to forward a name for INEC Chairman.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
“Some people say a partisan President should not have that power. That may be how the law ought to be, but as of now, that is what the Constitution provides.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
“When the government declared an emergency in Rivers State, I condemned it\u2014and I still do. You cannot be wrong and get it right.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
“When they proposed a tax reform law, I supported it because I am a federalist. I am not in this service for other considerations. I am in it to advance ideals and values that are bigger than me and bigger than all of us. Those are the things that move me and brought me into politics.”<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Also,Bayelsa State PDP chairman, Mr Solomon Aguanana in a phone in interview said governor Douye Diri was the leader\u00a0 of the party here, “he had the reasons he said he is leaving the party, so let’s still give him some few times so that the reason will be clear, as at today, it’s still sketchy.<\/div>\n

“We cannot say as a party if we are joining him, he has not said where he is going, he resigned from the party today, so, let’s give him sometime for us to know where he is heading, and then subsequent details will be made public.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
“If the deputy governor is not joining the governor to resign, he becomes the party leader, because in the absence of the governor, the deputy becomes the leader, he has been the deputy leader of the party, according to the constitution of the party, the constitution recognizes governor and the deputy, but we have to get the clarification from the deputy governor himself, few days from now, the situation will be clear, for us to give you the proper perspective.”<\/div>\n

Speaking further Mr Aguanana said”, we are not challenging the resignation in court, at national level, PDP has a lot of defection issues, how many of them have they be able to challenge, the one of Governor Mbah yesterday, that has not been challenged, the one of Delta Governor, the one of Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State, they have not been able to challenge any,”<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
