{"id":805,"date":"2024-10-09T13:53:06","date_gmt":"2024-10-09T13:53:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dailyechoes.ng\/?p=805"},"modified":"2024-10-09T13:53:06","modified_gmt":"2024-10-09T13:53:06","slug":"brain-drain-senate-wants-fg-to-increase-budget-of-tertiary-institutions-in-2025","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dailyechoes.ng\/index.php\/2024\/10\/09\/brain-drain-senate-wants-fg-to-increase-budget-of-tertiary-institutions-in-2025\/","title":{"rendered":"Brain Drain: Senate wants FG To Increase Budget Of Tertiary Institutions In 2025"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Brain Drain: Senate wants FG To Increase Budget Of Tertiary Institutions In 2025<\/p>\n<p>*Raises alarm over spates of\u00a0 menace<\/p>\n<p>Disturbed by the increasing rate of brain drain in Nigerian universities, the Senate, on Tuesday, called on the Federal Government to increase budgetary allocation to Nigerian universities in the country in the 2025 budget.<\/p>\n<p>The upper chamber also Mandated its relevant Committees to liaise with Ministers of Education, Finance, Health and other relevant agencies of government, with a view to working out modalities to check the increasing spate of brain drain in the Nigerian universities.<\/p>\n<p>These resolutions following a motion titled &#8220;urgent need to address the challenges of increasing cases of brain drain in the Nigerian university system&#8221;, sponsored by Professor Anthony Ani.<\/p>\n<p>Senator Ani represents Ebonyi South Senatorial District, having been elected to replace former Governor of Ebonyi State, Senator Dave Umahi, who resigned from the Red Chamber, after being appointed Minister of Works by President Bola Tinubu.<\/p>\n<p>After Senator Ani introduced and led debate on the motion, other Senators who made contributions lamented the pathetic trend that has hit the nation&#8217;s Universities in particular and some other critical sectors of the economy.<\/p>\n<p>The Lawmaker articularly lamented that according to report contained in the National Universities Commission (NUC), many Nigerian Universities operate with less than 50 percent of the required academic staff due to brain drain .<\/p>\n<p>According to him, the remunerations of the Nigerian University Lecturers are among the poorest in the world, as it was last reviewed over 15 years ago, saying that this could not meet the current economic realities of the country.<\/p>\n<p>He added that many universities in other West African Countries have better working conditions than what is obtainable in the Nigerian university system, describing it as rather worrisome.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Brain drain has assumed an unprecedented posture in recent time, due to the current economic situation of the country.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This should be a cause for concern, as it threatens the survival of the country\u2019s higher education, particularly in the engineering, medicine and sciences, which are critical for the socio-economic development of this country&#8221;, he said .<\/p>\n<p>Many Senators who contributed to the well debated motion, submitted that the problem was not limited to the Universities but some other critical sectors like the health sector where doctors and Nurses , are leaving their jobs in droves on yearly basis for greener pasture in abroad.<\/p>\n<p>In his remarks at the end of the debate on the motion, the President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio said: &#8220;Brain drain is a big problem not just in the education sector but in some other critical sector like the Health sector where not let down 22,000 Nigerian Health Workers are in the United States of America alone.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We shall surely do our best to improve the lots of Universities teachers and others , in curbing the problem&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>End.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Brain Drain: Senate wants FG To Increase Budget Of Tertiary Institutions In 2025 *Raises alarm over spates of\u00a0 menace Disturbed by the increasing rate of brain drain in Nigerian universities, the Senate, on Tuesday, called on the Federal Government to increase budgetary allocation to Nigerian universities in the country in the 2025 budget.
