A civil society organization, Development Watch Network (DWN), has urged the leadership of the National Assembly to account for the alleged missing N18.6 billion meant for projects under the National Assembly Service Commission (NASC).<\/p>\n
The group, in a statement signed by its Executive Director, Abdulgaffar Akin, on Tuesday, said the unaccounted funds raised serious concerns about financial management within the legislative bureaucracy. <\/p>\n
He enjoined the Senate President and the Speaker of the House of Representatives to make public the full details of how the \u20a618.6bn NASC project funds were utilized, calling for a comprehensive and independent audit of the commission\u2019s financial records.<\/p>\n
The statement partly reads, \u201cThe Development Watch Network (DWN) is gravely concerned by credible reports regarding the unaccounted \u20a618.6 billion earmarked for the National Assembly Service Commission (NASC) project funds. This staggering sum, reportedly missing, represents a critical breach of public trust and a direct threat to transparency, good governance, and national development.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs a civil society organization committed to promoting accountability and participatory governance, DWN calls on the leadership of the National Assembly\u2014both the Senate President and Speaker of the House of Representatives\u2014to: Publicly disclose the status and usage of the \u20a618.6 billion NASC project funds, Initiate or support a full-scale, independent audit of the NASC\u2019s financial activities related to the missing funds.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe also want them to cooperate with anti-corruption and law enforcement agencies to ensure that those responsible for any mismanagement, diversion, or embezzlement are held accountable, and commit to transparency by publishing NASC budgets, expenditures, and procurement processes moving forward.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe National Assembly must not be seen as shielding financial misconduct. It must instead serve as a beacon of accountability to the nation it represents. The apparent disappearance of \u20a618.6 billion\u2014funds meant to strengthen the legislative service infrastructure\u2014is an insult to Nigerian taxpayers and an affront to democratic values.
