As the nation awaited the outcome of Namdi Kanu\u2019s trial on Friday,the Federal High Court in Abuja has fixed November 20 for judgment in the terrorism trial of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), marking a crucial phase in the long-running legal battle between the separatist leader and the Nigerian government.<\/p>\n
Justice James Omotosho announced the date on Friday, following the expiration of the six days earlier granted to Kanu to open his defence. <\/p>\n
The court noted that Kanu failed to utilize the opportunity, ruling that he could not later allege denial of his right to a fair hearing.<\/p>\n
During the resumed proceedings, Kanu filed a fresh motion challenging the legality of his trial, arguing that the Terrorism Prevention and Prohibition Act, under which he is being prosecuted, had been repealed and therefore no longer forms a valid basis for the charges against him.<\/p>\n
The IPOB leader contended that terrorism is no longer a recognized offence under Nigerian law, insisting that the case lacked any legal foundation. He, therefore, urged the court to strike out the charges and order his immediate release.<\/p>\n
Justice Omotosho, after hearing the arguments, reserved judgment for November 20, when the court is expected to deliver a definitive ruling that could determine whether Kanu continues to face trial or regains his freedom.<\/p>\n
