Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja on Thursday sentenced Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), to life imprisonment after convicting him on terrorism-related charges.<\/p>\n
Delivering the sentencing, the judge said the gravity of Kanu\u2019s offences and his lack of remorse placed him at risk of receiving the maximum penalty under the law, which is death.<\/p>\n
However, Justice Omotosho stated that the court had chosen to temper justice with mercy, opting instead for a life sentence.<\/p>\n
The court held that Kanu\u2019s actions, including the issuance of violent threats and directives that allegedly led to killings, destruction of property and widespread fear across the South-East, had caused significant harm to citizens and undermined national security.<\/p>\n
Justice Omotosho also ordered that Kanu be held in protective custody. <\/p>\n
He noted that, given the outrage and suffering linked to Kanu\u2019s activities, particularly in the South-East, it was necessary to safeguard him from possible attacks while serving his sentence.<\/p>\n
Kanu was immediately returned to the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS), which is expected to enforce the court\u2019s directive regarding his protection and long-term confinement.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
