The Nigerian government has called on citizens to embrace low sulphur fuels and Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) to protect the environment and improve public health.<\/p>\n
The Minister of Environment, Balarabe Abbas Lawal, made the statement during the inauguration of the Inter-Agency Committee on Fuels in Abuja.<\/p>\n
Lawal emphasized that the use of cleaner fuels like low sulphur petrol and CNG would significantly reduce air pollution and mitigate health issues linked to high sulphur content in fuel.<\/p>\n
He pointed out that the burning of high sulphur fuels contributes to the worsening of air quality, extreme weather events, and the overall effects of climate change.<\/p>\n
“High sulphur fuels have been linked to rising cases of asthma attacks, chronic bronchitis, and other respiratory ailments,” Lawal said, stressing the importance of adopting cleaner energy sources.<\/p>\n
The Minister also highlighted the recent revisions to Nigeria\u2019s Industrial Standards, which lower the permissible sulphur concentrations in petrol, diesel, and kerosene. These changes, Lawal noted, were made possible through collaboration with key stakeholders in the energy and environmental sectors.<\/p>\n
Mrs. Bahijjatu Abubakar, Director of Pollution Control and Environmental Health at the Federal Ministry of Environment, also addressed the gathering, thanking committee members for their commitment to supporting the government\u2019s efforts in achieving cleaner air and a healthier environment.<\/p>\n
