Judicial Corruption Threatens Nigeria’s Democracy-HURIWA – Demands Swift Prosecution of Corrupt Judges by EFCC, ICPC
By George Mgbeleke
The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has called on the National Judicial Council (NJC) to establish a robust, transparent and time-bound internal anti-corruption mechanism to work closely with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) to investigate, expose and prosecute judicial officers credibly implicated in corruption.
HURIWA says the disturbing warning by retired Supreme Court Justice Amina Adamu Augie that corruption is turning Nigerian courts into “market stalls” captures the depth of the crisis confronting the nation’s justice system and reinforces the urgent need for decisive institutional action.
The association warns that judicial corruption represents a grave threat to public confidence, constitutional democracy and the peaceful resolution of disputes in Nigeria. When citizens begin to perceive the courts as commercial outlets where justice goes to the highest bidder, the very foundation of the rule of law becomes endangered.
HURIWA says Nigeria cannot afford to allow this dangerous erosion of public confidence to persist, particularly as the country approaches another election cycle. If citizens lose faith in the ability of the judiciary to deliver impartial justice, aggrieved individuals and groups may increasingly contemplate self-help, with potentially devastating consequences for national stability, democratic governance and social cohesion.
The association cautions that no democracy can survive sustainably when its citizens lose confidence in the institutions responsible for protecting their rights, resolving disputes and holding public officials accountable.
HURIWA therefore demands that the NJC stop treating judicial corruption as an exclusively internal disciplinary matter whenever credible evidence points to possible criminal conduct. While acknowledging the constitutional and administrative responsibilities of the NJC, the association insists that these responsibilities must not become a procedural shield against criminal investigation and prosecution by legally empowered anti-graft agencies.
HURIWA calls on the Chief Justice of Nigeria, as Chairman of the NJC, to initiate an urgent institutional framework with clear timelines for examining corruption complaints against judicial officers. The framework should ensure that credible cases involving suspected bribery, abuse of office, illicit enrichment and other criminal offences reach the appropriate investigative authorities without unnecessary delay.
The association says the NJC must act decisively on petitions against judicial officers and promptly refer matters requiring criminal investigation to the EFCC and ICPC, in accordance with the law. Administrative disciplinary proceedings must complement, rather than frustrate, legitimate criminal investigations and prosecutions.
HURIWA maintains that the fight against corruption must not stop at the doors of the judiciary. Judges occupy positions of extraordinary public trust, and their authority carries an equally extraordinary obligation to uphold integrity, impartiality and accountability. Any judicial officer who abuses that trust for personal enrichment must face the full consequences of the law if the evidence establishes criminal wrongdoing.
The association urges the EFCC and ICPC to discharge their statutory responsibilities without fear or favour, including in cases involving powerful judicial officers. HURIWA says the agencies must neither intimidate independent judges nor permit the prestige of judicial office to obstruct lawful investigations.
At the same time, the association stresses that every accused judicial officer remains entitled to due process, a fair hearing and the presumption of innocence. HURIWA says the objective must be to identify, investigate and punish proven misconduct, not to undermine judicial independence or expose honest judges to politically motivated attacks.
HURIWA says the distinction is fundamental: judicial independence must protect judges from improper interference, not provide cover for corruption.
The association also calls for stronger institutional safeguards against the manipulation of court proceedings, the deliberate frustration of cases, the sale of favourable judgments and other practices capable of turning the administration of justice into an instrument of privilege and oppression.
HURIWA notes that Justice Augie’s intervention highlights a wider institutional challenge. Inadequate funding, undue political interference, prolonged litigation and the high cost of accessing justice compound the damage caused by corruption. The association therefore urges the relevant authorities to strengthen judicial financial autonomy, modernise case management and improve access to affordable and timely justice.
However, HURIWA stresses that structural deficiencies must never become excuses for bribery or professional misconduct. The judiciary must confront corruption within its ranks with the same determination with which it expects other arms of government and members of the public to obey the law.
The association warns that public confidence cannot be restored through ceremonial declarations, public relations campaigns or the protection of influential offenders. It requires visible accountability, credible investigations, timely disciplinary decisions and prosecution where evidence supports criminal charges.
HURIWA calls on the NJC, the EFCC, the ICPC and the wider legal profession to demonstrate that no individual stands above the law and that the judiciary will not tolerate conduct capable of destroying its legitimacy.
The association says the consequences of institutional failure could be far-reaching. A justice system that citizens distrust may struggle to resolve political disputes peacefully, protect fundamental rights effectively and command voluntary obedience to its judgments. Such a development would endanger constitutional democracy and deepen Nigeria’s existing governance challenges.
HURIWA therefore declares that the time to decisively confront judicial corruption and bribery is now. Nigeria must not allow corruption to consume the judiciary from within and leave citizens without a credible institution to which they can turn for justice.
The association urges the NJC to act with urgency, the anti-graft agencies to investigate credible allegations professionally, and the legal profession to demonstrate zero tolerance for proven corruption, irrespective of the rank or influence of the offender.
HURIWA says Nigeria must rescue its judiciary from corruption before the collapse of public trust inflicts even greater damage on the rule of law and the country’s democratic future.

NCCSALW Zonal Director Seeks Stronger Partnership with Other Security Agencies to Combat Illicit Arms Trafficking in Nigeria
By Uthman Baba-Naseer,Minna
The Zonal Director of the National Centre for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons (NCCSALW), North Central Zone, Abdul Adamu Eneche, has called for stronger cooperation and intelligence sharing among security agencies to combat illicit arms trafficking in Nigeria.
Eneche made the call in Lafia, Nasarawa State, during the formal handover of recovered firearms and ammunition by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Nasarawa State Command, to the Centre.
He commended the NDLEA for recovering the weapons, describing the operation as a significant contribution to national security.
The Zonal Director emphasised that sustained collaboration among security agencies was critical to dismantling networks involved in illegal arms trafficking, urging stakeholders and members of the public to support efforts to curb the proliferation of small arms and light weapons.
Eneche assured that the recovered weapons and ammunition would be properly documented and securely stored before their eventual destruction in accordance with established international arms-control procedures and best practices.
The Commander of Narcotics, NDLEA Nasarawa State Command, CN Daniel Saidu, said the weapons and ammunition were recovered during raid operations and stop-and-search exercises across the state.
Saidu explained that although the agency’s primary responsibility was to combat drug-related offences, its operatives also recover illicit firearms encountered during operations and hand them over to the appropriate authorities for necessary action.
He reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to tackling drug and arms trafficking, stressing that the seizures reflected its zero-tolerance policy towards criminal activities.
The recovered items comprise four locally fabricated pistols, one locally made revolver pistol, one locally made single-barrel cartridge pistol, 13 rounds of live 9mm ammunition and eight rounds of live cartridge ammunition.
The handover is in line with Section 35(1) and (2) of the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons Act, 2024, which provides for the transfer of recovered, seized or surrendered illicit small arms and light weapons by security agencies to the Centre for documentation, safe storage and eventual destruction.
Officials of both agencies jointly inspected and verified the recovered items following the handover.
The weapons were subsequently transported from Lafia to Minna, Niger State, under armed escort by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) and secured at the DSS Niger State Command pending further directives.

Oyo gruesome murder: APC accuses APM, Makinde thugs … As Alli Asks Oyo Elders to caution Makinde
By Our Correspondent
Sequel to the gruesome murder of an All Progressives Congress (APC) member in Ibadan by Allied People’s Movement (APM) hoodlums, the Senator Sharafadeen Alli Campaign Organisation (SSACO) has called on elders across the state to warn Governor Seyi Makinde and the APM governorship candidate, Hon. Bimbo Adekanmbi, against foisting violence on the people of Oyo State ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a statement by the organisation’s Director of Media and Publicity Bisi Oladele, the SSACO expressed surprise that Makinde and Adekanmbi have adopted bloodshed as their new campaign method, but insisted that their ambition is not worth the life of any individual living anywhere in Oyo State.
The organisation chronicled attacks and killings of opposition members in the state in the last two weeks, and warned that senseless killings and brigandage must not take over Oyo State in Governor Makinde’s desperation to force his lackey, Hon. Adekanmbi, on the good people of the state in 2027.
The statement read: “The Senator Sharafadeen Alli Campaign Organisation (SSACO) was gripped with horror as an APC member in Ward 6, Ibadan South West Local Government, Ridwan, popularly known with the nickname Paul Moor, was machetted to death by APM hoodlums on Friday. The young man was gruesomely murdered for defecting from APM to APC, only 24 hours to his 35th birthday.
“This is the latest in the series of attacks on opposition figures in the last two weeks. Senator Alli’s wife, Alhaja Tawakalit Alli, was attacked during a peaceful free health programme she organised last week. The APC candidate for Ibadan North-West/South-West Federal Constituency Hon. Folake Olunloyo-Oshinowo, was also attacked during a peaceful campaign on the same day. The campaign train of Hon. Remi Oseni, the APC candidate for Oyo South Senatorial District, was also attacked on the same day.
“Similarly, the campaign team of Alhaji Oriyomi Hamzat, Accord Party’s governorship candidate, was attacked at Molete, Ibadan, during a peaceful campaign.
“These ugly attacks and killing of opposition members in Oyo State are anti-democratic, senseless and unacceptable. The rights of Nigerians to freedom of association and speech are guaranteed in the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and remain sacred. Governor Makinde and Hon. Adekanmbi must always remember this fact. The state must not descend to bloodshed by their directive.
“The Senator Sharafadeen Alli Campaign Organisation wishes to remind Governor Makinde and Hon. Adekanmbi that Oyo State belongs to all citizens and residents, not just APM members. It is important for the two leaders to tame their fear of losing in the forthcoming election which is responsible for these senseless attacks. We urge them to have a rethink and prevail on their members to desist from the heinous crimes they are committing.
“For emphasis, the people of Oyo State are tired of the Makinde administration, and they have already embraced Senator Sharafadeen Alli, who will run a people-centred governance instead of continuation of a government of deceit. We call on elders across Oyo State to call Governor Makinde and Hon. Adekanmbi to oder.
“We call on the Commissioner of Police in Oyo State and other security agencies to fish out these murderers and bring them to justice. Oyo State people deserve a peaceful campaign. And Senator Alli will sustain his issue-based campaign throughout this period. We urge the APM to take a cue from us.”
