HURIWA Tackles Oyedele: Stop Campaigning for Tinubu, Rescue Nigerians from Economic Ruin

Published

on

By George Mgbeleke
The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has strongly condemned the Minister of State for Finance, Taiwo Oyedele, for what it describes as a misplaced fixation on President Bola Tinubu’s second-term prospects while Nigerians endure crushing poverty, soaring petrol prices and an escalating cost-of-living crisis.

HURIWA in statement by its national coordinator,Comrade Emmanuel Nnadozie Onwubiko, says Oyedele should stop acting like a political promoter for the President and concentrate on the economic responsibilities for which he was appointed. The association observes that Nigerians need urgent answers to their economic problems, not assurances about what international investors supposedly think of Tinubu’s chances in the 2027 election.

HURIWA maintains that the minister’s suggestion that markets and the international community are already pricing in a Tinubu second term is, at best, his own assessment and cannot be presented as a verdict on Nigeria’s political future. The power to elect the country’s next president belongs to Nigerians, not foreign investors, global financial institutions or powerful boardroom interests.

The association says it is disturbing that a senior economic official would use an international economic gathering to project the President’s re-election prospects when he should be explaining how the government intends to arrest worsening hardship, revive productive sectors, create jobs and restore the purchasing power of ordinary citizens.

HURIWA observes that the Nigerian economy cannot be defended with political projections while citizens are being battered by the consequences of policies they can barely survive. The association challenges Oyedele to explain how the administration intends to make life bearable for workers whose wages have been overwhelmed by the cost of food, transportation, electricity and other essential needs.

HURIWA further says the government must confront legitimate concerns about its growing reliance on borrowing. It observes that reports of increased revenue collections by government agencies should provoke questions about expenditure priorities, fiscal discipline and why borrowing remains a recurring feature of public finance.

The association recalls that economic commentator Dele Oye raised serious concerns about the growth of Nigeria’s public debt under the Tinubu administration in a report published by The Guardian on May 25, 2026. HURIWA says the government owes Nigerians a transparent account of its borrowing decisions, the projects financed with the loans and the concrete benefits those debts are delivering.

It warns that borrowing without demonstrable improvements in citizens’ welfare risks transferring an increasingly heavy financial burden to future generations. HURIWA insists that economic managers cannot demand public patience indefinitely while the costs of government policies continue to fall disproportionately on ordinary Nigerians.

On fuel subsidy, HURIWA rejects the argument that every form of subsidy is inherently incompatible with economic development. The association observes that governments in advanced economies provide various forms of public support to protect vulnerable households, sustain essential services and cushion citizens against economic shocks.

HURIWA says the real problem is corruption, waste, poor oversight and the failure to design and implement public interventions transparently—not the principle of helping citizens cope with unbearable economic pressures.

The association maintains that the removal of petrol subsidy without adequate protection for low-income households has aggravated the hardship facing millions of Nigerians. With petrol prices remaining exceptionally high and wages struggling to keep pace, HURIWA says the government cannot simply invoke market forces while ignoring the human consequences of its decisions.

HURIWA cites Professor Pat Utomi’s criticism of the government’s handling of petrol prices and wages, published by TheCable on October 16, 2026. Utomi questioned the President’s response to the suffering of citizens, asking: “But does the President care? How does he even sleep at night, knowing that millions of Nigerians are struggling to survive in a country blessed with abundant natural resources?”

HURIWA says this question captures the anger and frustration of citizens who see a country rich in natural resources struggling to provide economic security for its people. The association observes that economic reforms lose public legitimacy when citizens are repeatedly asked to endure sacrifices without seeing corresponding improvements in their living conditions.

The association therefore demands that Oyedele redirect his attention from political speculation to the urgent task of economic recovery. It calls on the Federal Government to explain how it intends to reduce the cost of living, expand employment opportunities, strengthen household purchasing power, tackle corruption and ensure that public revenue is translated into tangible benefits.

HURIWA insists that the success of economic reforms must be measured by how Nigerians live, not by how international investors assess the President’s re-election chances.

The association warns that no government can sustainably claim economic progress while millions of its citizens struggle to afford basic necessities. It urges the Tinubu administration to demonstrate greater sensitivity to public suffering, embrace transparent fiscal management and consider targeted relief measures that protect vulnerable Nigerians without opening fresh channels for corruption.

HURIWA stresses that Nigeria’s political future will be determined by the electorate, and no amount of international investor sentiment can substitute for the judgment of citizens who must live with the consequences of government policies.

IGP Olatunji Disu

Operatives of the Bayelsa State Vigilante Security Service have arrested a 21-year-old Boy, identified as Wisdom Oyanbo, over the alleged rape of a 23-year-old girl, Pereagbe, in the Edepie area of Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital.

The suspect was arrested on Friday following a 48-hour intelligence-led operation launched after the victim reported the incident to operatives stationed at the popular Tombia-Edepie Roundabout.

According to the victim’s account, the incident occurred at about 10 p.m. last Tuesday while she was returning home along the School-to-Land Road in Edepie. She alleged that Oyanbo accosted her with a machete and alongside an accomplice who is currently at large, forcibly took her into an uncompleted building, where they allegedly raped her and dispossessed her of valuables, including her mobile phone.

Despite the trauma of the incident, the victim reportedly summoned the courage to report the matter to the vigilante operatives, who immediately commenced investigations and intelligence gathering to track down the alleged perpetrators.

Following the operation, Oyanbo was traced to a hideout within the area and arrested. During interrogation, he allegedly confessed to his involvement in the crime, attributing his actions to the influence of the devil and cultism.

The suspect reportedly led the operatives to a man identified as Ibrahim, said to be from Gombe State, at Yenezue-Gene in Yenagoa. Ibrahim is alleged to be a receiver of stolen properties from suspected criminals and reportedly bought the victim’s mobile phone. He was subsequently arrested for further investigation.

Further information from the security outfit indicated that Oyanbo allegedly confessed to being a member of the Greenlanders cult group. His alleged accomplice, whom he reportedly identified as a fellow member of the same group, remains at large, while efforts are ongoing to apprehend him.

The suspects have since been handed over to Operation Doo-Akpo of the Bayelsa State Police Command for further investigation.

Speaking on the development, Chairman of the Bayelsa State Vigilante Security Service, Hon. Doubiye Alagba, urged members of the public to promptly report suspicious activities and criminal incidents to security agencies, stressing the importance of intelligence sharing and cooperation between residents and security operatives in combating crime.

Alagba assured the victim that the case would be pursued, adding that the arrested suspect would be charged to court and efforts would continue to ensure that his alleged accomplice is apprehended.

He reaffirmed the commitment of the State vigilante outfit to supporting other security agencies in the fight against rape, cultism, robbery and other criminal activities across Bayelsa State, insisting that justice must prevail.

NASS kicks against externally influenced  Staff Promotion  …zeros in on  NILDS for training of personnel

The National Assembly Friday kicked against externally  influenced promotion of its staff not backed by  merit , as provided for ,in the National Assembly Service Act 2014 and applicable scheme of service .
It also kicked against existing ad – hoc arrangements of personnel  training which according to it , is not sustainable and lacking the Institutional capacity the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies ( NILDS), is known for.. .
Clerk to the National Assembly , Kamoru Ogunlana (Esq) , made submissions to these  effects  in his Speech at the commencement of three day retreat for top management of the National Assembly and National Assembly Service Commission ( NASC ), held at Transcorp Hilton Hotel , Abuja .
According to the CNA, the National Assembly service is a professional one , requiring staff to be appointed, promoted and developed principally on the basis of merit, competence, experience and  performance as stipulated by the National Assembly Service Act 2014.
” Where appointments or promotions are influenced by considerations outside the National Assembly Service Act 2014, and the applicable Scheme of Service, we risk creating serious institutional consequences, that is, judicial review, administrative embarrassment and institutional instability”, he warned .
He added that the consequences may not be limited to the individuals involved, they may also affect the entire Service.
” When seniority, cognate experience and competence is subordinated to ‘where you come from’ or other considerations, we may find ourselves with positions occupied by people who do not possess the requisite competence, experience or capacity for those responsibilities.
“The result can be an institution with too many people in positions and too few people with the capacity to perform effectively those positions”, he stressed .
On training , the CNA said time had come for NASS to look inward for training of its personnel  through an affiliate agency , the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies ( NILDS) , on account of Institutional capacity and scarce resources .
He said : ”  Our staff require continuous exposure to legislative practice, parliamentary procedure, policy analysis, research, digital technologies, public financial management, ethics, leadership and emerging global practices in parliamentary administration.
“The present Ad-hoc arrangement of training personnel of service is not sustainable given our limited financial resources.
“In this regard, I believe we should make more deliberate use of the considerable institutional capacity of the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS) as the central professional platform for the training and development of staff of the National Assembly Service”
However in his goodwill message, the Executive Chairman, National Assembly Service Commission ( NASC) , Chief Saviour Enyiekere , said the commission remains committed to fostering a disciplined , competent , responsive and forward – looking legislative service in which merit is recognised , due process respected, staff welfare receive appropriate attention and every officer encouraged to contribute meaningfully to institutional progress .
Both the President of the Senate , Senator  Godswill Akpabio and Speaker of the House of Representatives ,Hon Tajudeen Abbas , were represented at the ceremony .

*Coalition Of Parastatals CEOS: A Masterstroke For Tinubu’s Re-election*

A political earthquake is shaking up the road to 2027: a powerful coalition of federal agency heads has officially formed to spearhead President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election campaign. This unprecedented alignment of institutional heads represents the most strategic and formidable innovation yet ahead of the next general elections.

Under the Forum of CEOS of Federal Parastatals (FORCEPA), these institutional heavyweights have resolved that the campaign cannot be left to the governing All Progressives Congress (APC) alone. Instead, those who execute the government’s policies must actively participate in renewing its mandate—marking a profound shift in political thinking.

For years, Bureaucrats have abandoned the battlefield, cowardly hiding in the shadows. The architects of vital public programmes retreated behind ivory towers of silence, leaving their critical achievements defenseless against political crossfire and partisan sabotage. By refusing to stand and fight for their own records, these administrators have surrendered the narrative to opportunists in the opposition who would rather weaponise their hard-won results than protect the people they serve.

By engaging APC National Chairman Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda and the National Working Committee (NWC), the Forum—led by its Chairman and Director-General of the National Board for Technology Incubation, Dr. Kazeem Kolawole Raji—aims to close the dangerous gap between performance and perception. Their stance is simple and compelling: where the government has delivered, those achievements must be shared. After all, who is better equipped to communicate results than the people who produced them?

The strategic advantages of this coalition are monumental. While the 2023 campaign centered on promises of what President Tinubu would do, the 2027 narrative will shift entirely to accountability—what he has achieved. Winning that argument demands hard data, institutional memory, and deep grassroots mobilization. These chief executives command exactly those assets, making them indispensable to anchoring the next campaign in undeniable evidence.

They provide a complementary technical structure designed to extend the reach of the Presidential Campaign Council, not compete with it. These professionals, public-sector leaders, and political stakeholders offer deep expertise in election planning, grassroots mobilization, and strategic messaging. By leveraging nationwide networks through their parastatals, they drive government messaging into communities the central campaign machinery often misses.

In doing so, they affirm the bold nature of President Tinubu’s reforms, showing that key insiders who weigh the costs and benefits of difficult decisions remain confident enough to publicly campaign on that record. That courage is now being validated beyond Nigeria.

Five influential international institutions and rating agencies, including the International Monetary Fund (IMF), World Bank, African Development Bank, Fitch, and S&P, have acknowledged progress in Nigeria’s reform programme under President Tinubu. Their assessments point to improving macroeconomic stability, stronger external balances, better revenue mobilisation, and renewed confidence in economic policy. rewrite for high impact flow.

This external validation gives the Forum a credible foundation to build its campaign messaging on. However, as the chief executives themselves understand, the next test is to translate these macro gains into lower living costs, more jobs, rising purchasing power, and better living standards for ordinary Nigerians. That is precisely why their grassroots presence matters.

The calibre of the Forum’s leadership virtually guarantees its success, anchored by Chairman Dr. Raji—a distinguished telecommunications authority with more than 25 years of proven success in leadership, project management, and technological innovation.

Dr. Raji, an Oyo State-born engineer affectionately known as “Raji KK,” is a distinguished leader whose academic and leadership foundation was built at the prestigious University of Ibadan. During his time there, he served as the Hall Chairman of Nnamdi Azikiwe Hall (Zik Hall)—widely recognized as the most vibrant, politically active, and influential student residence in any African university.

He possesses an extraordinary academic portfolio that reflects a lifelong commitment to excellence. His qualifications span multiple disciplines, including a PhD. Combining deep technical engineering expertise, executive business acumen, and a proven track record of grassroots leadership, Dr. Raji stands out as a dynamic force in both academia and corporate management. During the 2023 general elections, he drove key grassroots initiatives as the Director of National Youth Mobilisation (South West) for the Tinubu-Shettima Presidential Campaign Council.

Another member of the forum who embodies the suitability of this arrangement is Otunba Biodun Ajiboye, the Chairman of the forum’s Media and Publicity Committee and Executive Secretary of the National Institute for Cultural Orientation (NICO). Ajiboye’s entry into public service is no accident. He brings the formidable expertise of a seasoned media personality and a legendary advertising leader with more than three decades of pioneering experience.

That blend of professional expertise, political loyalty, and oratorical power makes him perfectly cast for his current role. He understands that an election is won not just by mobilisation, but by messaging—and for an incumbent, that messaging must be rooted in performance.

As the CEO of NICO, he directly executes the Renewed Hope Agenda in the cultural sector while remaining one of the ruling party’s most consummate communicators. Thus, when he argued that the communication apparatus cannot be left to the PCC alone—advocating that the Forum act as a technical monitoring body to identify gaps and reinforce narratives—he speaks from both experience and authority.

Ultimately, the contribution of this coalition to the success of President Tinubu’s second-term bid in 2027 could be decisive. It provides what every incumbent needs but rarely organises early enough—a credible, coordinated, and decentralised army of validators who can speak with authority about what the government has achieved. It transforms the campaign from a purely party affair into a national project driven by those who know the work firsthand.

To dismantle the opposition’s relentless campaign of deceit and manufactured narratives, this coalition stands as an unstoppable frontline of undeniable facts, raw institutional power, and boots-on-the-ground dominance.

By deploying its members to explain, defend, and mobilise around the administration’s record — from internationally acknowledged macroeconomic reforms to everyday community impact — it ensures that the President’s long-term economic ambitions are not just understood in Washington, London, and Abidjan, but felt in markets, farms, and homes across Nigeria.

This is how elections are won in mature democracies—not by slogans alone, but by aligning the implementers with the campaigners. With Otunba Ajiboye providing the strategic communication leadership, the Forum has positioned itself as a critical pillar for victory in 2027.
