*MR. PRESIDENT: PLEASE BRING US DOWN FROM THIS CROSS* -Bishop Kukah tells Tinubu

Published

Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Most Rev Dr Matthew Hassan Kukah
Worried by the increasing suffering and hardship orchestrated by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s economic measures, Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Most Rev Dr Matthew Hassan Kukah has pleaded with Tinubu to relief Nigerian from burden.
His Easter message reads in part,”A very happy Easter to you and millions of our countrymen and women. For us Christians, this is the most important event in the history of our faith. It is the season of the Cross, the season of Christ’s triumph over death.
“This triumph was marked by the blind passion of those who crucified innocence. I am therefore using the metaphor of the cross to draw attention to the sufferings and afflictions that have befallen our country in the last years. These sufferings have been marked by a culture of brutality and savagery never witnessed in the history of our dear country.
“Taken together, they have placed our country outside the purveyor of human civilization. Across the entire country, every day, innocent citizens are kidnapped and held under the most inhuman conditions. A dark pall of death hangs languidly from north to south. It is impossible to find a home, a family, or a community that has not been caught in the cusp of this savagery. Now, Mr. President, Nigeria is reaching a breaking point.
“The nation is gradually becoming a huge national morgue. Mr. President, with a greater sense of urgency, hasten to bring us down from this cross of evil.”
Further more he said,”Mr. President, we all admit that you neither erected this cross nor did you effect our collective crucifixion. Notwithstanding, Nigerians have been dangling and bleeding on this cross of pain and mindless suffering for too long. A culture of cynicism and self-doubt over our capacity to secure peace for ourselves pervades our land. Indeed, a majority of our citizens feel that there is no hope in sight. However, for us as Christians, Hope is the anchor on which we hang all our hopes (Heb. 6:19). Now is the time to re-enkindle and renew that hope.
“With broken navigational aids, our journey to greatness is threatened. Yet, amidst all of this, we Christians are compelled to look unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith (Heb. 12:2). In times of deep moral and physical crises, we are often tempted, like the scribes and the elders to ask Jesus to prove himself by coming down from the cross (Matt. 27:40). Yet, we must learn to look up to the cross as the source of our boast (Gal: 14). Therefore, these times of great suffering should be times of hope, hope beyond human imagination, a hope which, as St. Paul assures us, does not disappoint (Rom. 5:5). Mr. President, renew our hope by bringing us down from this cross of brutality and suffering.
“We believe that all is not lost. Our hope has an allay in the holy father, Pope Francis, who last year declared this year, 2025, the Year of Hope with the theme, Pilgrims of Hope. The Pope appreciates that pilgrims are often sailing against the harsh currents of a broken world characterized by violence, pain, suffering, tribulation and death. The Pope said:  Uncertainty about the future may at times give rise to conflicting feelings, ranging from confident trust to apprehensiveness, from serenity to anxiety, from firm conviction to hesitation and doubt. Often we come across people who are discouraged, pessimistic and cynical about the future as if nothing could bring them happiness.
“The road to our collective discouragement in Nigeria has been laid by marauders, murderers, savages and ravenous predators who threaten to overrun our nation. Mr. President, immediately rid our dear country of these forces of darkness and bring us down from this cross of cynicism.”
Continuing he declared,”Mr. President, hunger, sickness and desolation stalk the land. We still believe removing the subsidies was the right decision. We note that the country now has a huge volume of resources in its domestic reserves. For over ten years now, farming has become one of the most hazardous pre-occupations in our country. I restate the obvious by warning that mere palliative distribution diminishes the dignity of citizens. We have remained between the rock of self-doubt and the hard place of hopelessness. Make food security a fundamental human right to all citizens. Mr. President, please bring us down from this painful cross of hunger.
“Some years back, some of our public officers confessed that they brought our current killers into our country as a strategy for upstaging the government of the day and to gain power. Strange as it may sound, today we have watched as the cancer of insecurity and violence have metastasized. Now, this cancer threatens the very foundation of our common humanity.
“The bandits have not only become embedded in every sphere of our lives, they threaten to destroy all that holds our communities together. This self-destructive cancer has invaded our communities and kidnapping is a now a dog whistle for undermining the very structure and foundation of our country. We now hang on the cross at the mercy of these forces of darkness. Mr. President, please, bring us down from this cross of insecurity.
“Finally, we are confident that a majority of the citizens of our country want to live in peace with one another. However, allowing this insecurity to persists will undermine all forms of goodwill that this or any government in Nigeria espouses. We have all the ingredients to create a toxic mix of violence that can spin out of control. Right now, frustration has penetrated every spectrum of our society especially as the government and its security agencies seem to have largely become spectators in the dance of death that has overtaken our country. We are in a dilemma now and the question is simple: is the persistence of the insecurity a statement of the lack of capacity of our men and women in uniform, or is it evidence that those at the top are reaping the fruits of funding their own war machine? In other words, are Nigerians lambs being sacrificed to an unknown god?
” Mr. President, step up, get to the finishing line and bring us down from this cross of shame.”
He added,”The resurrection of Jesus equips Christians to face life’s challenges with confidence. At Easter, we must remember that the law of the Lord is written in our hearts (Rom2:15). The structural deformities, the iniquities and corruption of our country are not an excuse for us to let down our guard. We are the light of the world, a city set on a hill. We are equipped with the light of Christ to drive out the darkness that threatens to engulf our country. Let us collectively renew our commitment and hope for building a society after the mind of our creator. I wish you, Mr. President, a happy Easter.  Blessings and a happy Easter to all Nigerians.”

The Chairman of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria, NAHCON, Ambassador Ismail Abba Yusuf, has reaffirmed the commitment of the board and management to deepening pilgrims’ education and spiritual preparedness ahead of this year’s Hajj.

Yusuf spoke during a strategic engagement and inauguration of the 2026 Hajj Ulama Team at the Hajj House headquarters of NAHCON in Abuja.

He urged the Islamic clerics to support the commission in conducting intensive sensitization sessions in multiple languages before and during the holy pilgrimage.

The meeting, according to NAHCON’s Deputy Director of Information and Publications, Fatima Sanda Usara, brought together 120 prominent clerics from across the country.

They include Professor Mansur Ibrahim Sokoto, Sheikh Bala Lau, Sheikh Abdulmuhyi Nasir representing Sheikh Sani Yahaya Jingir, Sheikh Abdulrahman Olanrewaju Ahmad, Sheikh Nasir Adam, Sheikh Muhammad Kabir Haruna Gombe, Sheikh Usman Usman Dahiru Bauchi, and Dr. Isa Akindele Solahuddeen, among others.

Yusuf stressed that their guidance should focus on equipping pilgrims with a clear understanding of the rudiments and essential aspects of Hajj rites so they can correctly fulfill their religious obligations.

He reiterated the need for continuous guidance and prompt responses to pilgrims’ questions and concerns, particularly in situations that may affect the validity of their Hajj.

The NAHCON boss added that the Ulama Team is also expected to organize special prayer sessions at key locations during the Hajj, especially at Arafat, for Nigeria, its leaders, national security, unity, peace, and economic prosperity.

Responding on behalf of the team, Professor Bashir Umar encouraged his colleagues to urge their congregations to pray for peaceful elections in Nigeria, noting that the upcoming Hajj falls within the 2027 general elections cycle.

The clerics emphasized the importance of nurturing pilgrims’ mental readiness, encouraging unity, sincerity, patience, and total devotion to Allah, while reinforcing Hajj as a transformative act of worship.

They collectively affirmed their readiness to ensure a spiritually fulfilling experience for Nigerian pilgrims.

In a related development, the Kogi State Council of Ulama of Nigeria has backed the NAHCON chairman, describing his appointment as a product of merit and moral credibility.

Led by its chairman, Sheikh Salman Adam Imam, the Council paid a courtesy visit to the NAHCON headquarters in Abuja to congratulate Yusuf.

The Council said his appointment was underpinned by a “distinguished career, tested administrative competence and enduring contributions to ethical development.”

It noted the symbolic significance of his emergence, pointing out that Yusuf is the first indigene of Kogi State—and indeed the North Central geopolitical zone—to head the commission since its establishment nearly three decades ago.

His track record, the clerics said, positions him to steer the commission at a critical juncture.

The group commended President Bola Tinubu for what it called a “well‑considered decision,” expressing confidence that Yusuf’s experience and leadership acumen would reposition NAHCON and restore institutional confidence.

It called on the commission’s management, staff, and stakeholders across the Muslim community to rally behind Yusuf to address systemic challenges and improve operational efficiency.

Responding, Yusuf expressed gratitude for the show of solidarity, describing the visit as humbling and encouraging.

He pledged to justify the confidence reposed in him and assured that his leadership would strive to surpass expectations and deliver measurable improvements in the commission’s performance.

ANI condemns harassment of Hijab-weaing students denied access at JAMB Examination centres

Imam (Dr.) Umar Farooq Abdullahi

By Uthman-Baba Naseer, Minna

The Association of Nigerian Imams has expressed its deep concern and condemnation the reports of hijab-wearing students being harassed, denied access, as well as forced to remove their religious attire at Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) examination centers at the recent 2026 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

The Association’s National Secretary,
Imam (Dr.) Umar Farooq Abdullahi, in a statement condemned the act
of an incident at Esther Oshikoya CBT Centre, Ibadan on Thursday, April 16, 2026, where candidate Fatimah Salaudeen and other female students were reportedly compelled to remove their hijab before accreditation.

Imam Umar, while demanding for prosecution and protection of religious freedom had described it as a direct violation of their dignity, their person hood, and their constitutional rights, stressing that similar reports from Peter Harvard Schools in Abuja confirm this is not isolated.

The statement noted”. We echo the piercing question of the JAMB Registrar, Professor Ishaq Oloyede: “How would you ask another man’s wife to remove her hijab?”.This act is not mere “overzealousness.”

It’s insisted that it is religious harassment, public humiliation, and an abuse of delegated authority.

“Citing sanctions in 2024 at Bafuto Institute, Lagos, and denials at
Covenant University and Mountain Top University during the 2023 Mock UTME,
shows a pattern of impunity that must end in no future distance.

It however maintained”.JAMB’s swift intervention in Ibadan is commendable, and we note that the
restriction was lifted.Saying apologies after violation cannot replace
accountability before violation.

The Association of Nigerian Imams seek for Immediate delisting of Esther Oshikoya CBT Centre and any other center, including Peter Harvard Schools Abuja, found to have enforced this illegal policy. Criminal investigation and prosecution of all adhoc staff, supervisors, and security personnel involved, under Section 10 and Section 38 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and relevant anti-discrimination
statutes.

According to the statement”.Other demands were Public disclosure by JAMB of disciplinary actions taken, to deter future violations, Mandatory retraining of all CBT center operators and security staff on JAMB’s guidelines on religious attire, with signed compliance before accreditation.

However, the law must have teeth, saying that without sanctions, we license the next violation.

The National Secretary had reminded Nigeria that freedom of religion is non-negotiable as stipulated.Section 38(1) of the 1999 Constitution guarantees every person the right to freedom of thought, conscience, and religion, including the right to manifest and propagate religion in worship, teaching, practice and observance.

The statement reiterated that the hijab is not a fashion statement. It is an act of worship and obedience for the Muslim woman.

JAMB’s own guidelines permit it, requiring only respectful, private
screening by female officers where necessary. No official, no security guard, no center owner has authority above the Constitution or above JAMB’s regulations.

Imam Farooq explained that to deny a girl her exam for wearing her hijab is to deny her education, her future,
and her citizenship. It is to tell half of this nation that their faith makes them
strangers in their own country. “We reject that”.

He stated that their message to all stakeholders was very clear which includes: “To CBT Centers: Your license to test is not a license to humiliate.

Respect the faith of candidates or forfeit the right to host them.To Parents and Students: Know your rights. Report every violation immediately with evidence. Silence feeds oppression.

Also: “To Government and JAMB: Enforce your policies. Publish a blacklist of violating centers. Freedom of religion cannot depend on the mood of an invigilator.

While, “To All Nigerians: Today it is the hijab. An attack on one faith is a threat to all faiths. The Association of Nigerian Imams stands with every Fatimah Salaudeen in this country. We stand for a Nigeria where merit, not modesty, determines access to education.

“.We await JAMB’s action beyond statements. The nation awaits justice. It noted.

Hajj pilgrims to Mecca

By Abdul-Ganiyy Akanbi

A faith‑based civil society organisation, CSO, the Independent Hajj Reporters, IHR, has commended the Kebbi State Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Board for releasing its 2026 Hajj flight manifest ahead of schedule and urged other states to emulate it..

In a statement signed by its National Coordinator, Ibrahim Muhammad, the group described the move as a major step toward transparency and efficiency in Hajj operations.

It praised the Executive Secretary Alhaji Farouk Enabo and his management team for complying with the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria, NAHCON’s directive on timely disclosure of travel schedules.

According to IHR, early publication of the manifest helps intending pilgrims plan properly and reduces anxiety before the airlift.

“We commend the Kebbi State Pilgrims Board for releasing its flight manifest well ahead of the airlift.

“This aligns with NAHCON’s directive to ensure pilgrims are informed early about their departure dates to enable proper planning,” it stated.

The CSO noted that releasing the manifest about 17 days before airlift shows growing improvement in Nigeria’s Hajj management.

“This development reflects a significant improvement in the standard of Hajj operations, particularly in pre‑airlift arrangements,” it added.

The IHR urged other state pilgrims’ welfare boards to adopt the practice to boost coordination nationwide.

“We call on other states to emulate this commendable initiative, as it will greatly improve the overall standard of Hajj airlift operations,” the group said.

It also lauded NAHCON for enforcing regulatory guidelines and ensuring stakeholder compliance.

The organisation called for sustained public enlightenment so pilgrims stay fully informed once schedules are finalised.

“We urge continued awareness campaigns so that pilgrims are fully informed once their schedules are finalised,” the statement concluded.
