Osun State governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke

By David Owei.

Governor Ademola Adeleke has tasked the political class in and out of government to prioritise delivery of good governance to strengthen and enhances citizens’ faith and trust in the democratic process.

The governor dropped the admonition earlier today after his arrival in Nigeria after few days of medical check up abroad.

“I am glad to be back after few days off. We are energised to continue the task of delivering on good governance. That is basically the whole essence of politicking. That is what I am committed to.

“Political class must deliver on good governance. We cannot joke with the rule of law. We must be accountable and transparent. We must serve only the interest of the people, not our selfish agenda.

“We must build consensus among ourselves. Any fight over power must be within the rule of law and welfare of the people. Any politics that hurt the people is condemnable. We must seek power to serve the people, not ourselves.

“When we get power, let use it to serve the people. As a governor, at times I forget the position when addressing needs of our people. Leaders must serve the people. That is how we can strengthen our democracy”, the governor noted.

He also repeated his condolence to the people of Akinlalu and expressed optimism that ongoing police investigation will soon be concluded.

“I am back and I again condole with the people of Akinlalu. Investigation is ongoing and I assure the families of victims that justice will be done”, the governor noted at the airport.

HURIWA Warns Security forces Against Political Interference …demands INEC Chairman’s Exit ….condemns delay in S/Court Hearing

National Coordinator HURIWA, Comrade Emmanuel Nnadozie Onwubiko

By George Mgbeleke

Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria has issued a strong warning to Nigeria’s security agencies to immediately steer clear of partisan politics, cautioning that any attempt to compromise their constitutional neutrality poses a grave threat to democracy and national stability.
HURIWA expressed deep concern over what it described as emerging signs of undue involvement of security operatives in political processes, particularly in matters relating to opposition parties.

The association stressed that security forces are constitutionally mandated to protect lives and property—not to serve as instruments for political manipulation or intimidation.

The group warned that any officer or agency found to be acting in furtherance of partisan interests will be held accountable under the law, noting that the integrity of Nigeria’s democracy depends heavily on the neutrality of its security institutions.

In the same vein, HURIWA called for the immediate resignation or dismissal of the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Joash Amupitan, over what it described as a growing crisis of confidence surrounding his leadership.

The association stated that the credibility of the electoral body has been severely undermined by allegations of bias, inconsistency, and perceived interference in the internal affairs of political parties, warning that Nigeria cannot afford to approach the 2027 general elections under a cloud of distrust.

“HURIWA unequivocally demands the immediate stepping aside of the INEC Chairman to restore public confidence in the electoral process. The sanctity of elections must not be jeopardized by questions surrounding the neutrality of the umpire,” the statement read.

Furthermore, the group condemned what it described as an unjustifiable delay by the Supreme Court of Nigeria in hearing the appeal filed by the leadership of the African Democratic Congress led by David Mark.

HURIWA noted that the delay in adjudicating the matter has created uncertainty and tension within the political space, raising serious concerns about access to timely justice and the potential impact on democratic participation.

“The continued delay in hearing this critical appeal is unacceptable. Justice delayed, in this instance, is justice denied—not just to the parties involved, but to the democratic process itself,” the association stated.

The group urged the apex court to expedite action on the matter in line with the principles of fairness, urgency, and constitutional responsibility, especially given the far-reaching implications for political stability and electoral integrity.

HURIWA reiterated that Nigeria stands at a critical juncture and warned that any perceived alignment of security agencies, electoral bodies, or the judiciary with partisan interests could erode public trust and destabilize the nation’s democratic foundations.

The association called on all institutions of state to act within the confines of the law, uphold neutrality, and place national interest above political expediency.

ADC is duty bound to rescue Nigeria from dictatorship, exploitative governance-David Mark …..Says We ‘ll not bow, we will not cower, we will not retreat *Adopts David Mark as National Chairman,NEC …..Expels,Nafiu Bala Gombe as factional chairman

Despite all attempts by the Minister of Federal Capital Territory(FCT) Barrister Nyesom Wike and other Agencies of the Federal government to truncate the scheduled Convention of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) on Tuesday went ahead to hold the exercise at Rainbow Event center Abuja.

This is even as the party unanimously affirmed, former President of the Senate,Senator David Mark as its National Chairman while expelling Nafiu Bala Gombe as factional chairman.

Addressing participants at the convention, the party’s National Chairman, Senator David Mark having recalled the ordeals of the party and it’s National Executive Committee from inception by the ruling party and it’s Agencies, vowed that the party is duty bound to rescue Nigeria from creeping dictatorship and exploitative governance.
According to him, ADC will not bow, we will not cower and we will not retreat.

He said,”Forces that feared what a united ADC represents came for us; through the courts, through institutions, through bureaucratic obstruction. They sought to stop this convention from happening. They removed our names from official portals.

“They denied us preferred venues. They deployed every instrument available to them to ensure that you – the delegates, the members, the owners of this party – would never gather.

“But we are here.At our recent press briefing, we made it clear that the integrity of democratic institutions must be protected at all times. We also made it clear that in an ever-shrinking democratic space that is orchestrated by those in the ruling party, the ADC will not bow, we will not cower, and we will not retreat.

“Dear party members and leaders, let me remind all of us that strong political movements are not built in moments of ease and in comfort. They are built in times like this, when a broken nation cries out for change and the people look for those who would lead with commitment and honesty.

” We will not surrender, because what is at stake is not just about the ADC or the opposition. It is the very survival of our democracy. To surrender therefore is to yield to tyranny and therefore become complicit in the destruction of our democracy. ”

Continuibg he said,”And let us here be the answer to every doubt, every threat, and every shenanigan designed to keep Nigeria trapped in a one-party future. The ADC cannot be wished away. The ADC cannot be litigated into silence. The ADC belongs to the Nigerian people – and the Nigerian people have spoken by showing up today.

“I say to those who orchestrated these obstacles: you have not weakened us. You have welded us together. Every attempt to suppress this party has only deepened the resolve of our members, widened our coalition, and reminded Nigerians why a strong opposition is not optional; it is essential to democracy’s survival.

“Across Nigeria, there is a growing awareness, by a generation that desires a different country, a country that nurtures their talents and support their ambitions. This generation is asking tough questions of leadership and those who seek to lead. We are greatly delighted to see that under the harsh light of this scrutiny, the African Democratic Congress is emerging as a credible alternative, not necessarily because of who we are, but because our vision and ambition align with their own. The reason we are here, the genuine re-commitment to putting the people first, is the very reason that they continue to believe, despite the daunting challenges that they face today, that Nigeria, this great country, will rediscover itself.

” We in the African Democratic Congress recognise this moment as a moment of great opportunity, as well as a moment of great responsibility. Our objective is not merely political success or a mere quest for power. We see it as a duty to ourselves and to posterity to demonstrate to all Nigerians that something good can come out of politics, and that democracy can actually deliver a better life that they seek. This is the fundamental goal of our party.

” We view this as a generational challenge. And this is why we say to all opposition leaders in the country, regardless of your political party, come, let us work together to save our country. The challenges that we are confronted with goes beyond partisanship, it is a patriotic duty to rescue our country from creeping dictatorship and exploitative governance.

“Dear party men and women, let me congratulate us all for the successful conduct of our congresses. Despite the obstacles put on our way, we have stayed focused on the bigger picture, and together, we scaled through those difficulties to deliver a successful and credible congress across the country. This shows that we are successfully planting our roots in villages and communities across the length and breadth of our country; that we are providing platforms for millions of our people to participate in the process of governing their own country. This is the very essence of democracy.

” To those who have emerged as leaders at the local and state levels, I extend my congratulations. Your emergence carries responsibility. Leadership within this party must always be defined by service and accountability. You must also recognise that we are a coalition, a coming together of diverse voices, experiences, and aspirations. Therefore, you must lead with a deep sense of responsibility, openness, and inclusion. Your doors must remain open to all members of this coalition, and to others who are inspired to join us on this journey. Leadership in this moment demands not exclusion, but expansion; not control, but coordination; not narrow interest, but a broad commitment to unity and shared purpose.

“To those who did not emerge, I encourage you to remain committed. Political contests are part of democratic life, but the unity and progress of the party must always come first.

“We are engaged in the deliberate task of building a party that can stand the test of time. The foundational principles of this party are clear. They are transparency, accountability, and participation. These are not abstract ideals. They are principles that must guide our daily actions and the standards by which we will judge ourselves.

” In the ADC, the constitution will be supreme. The party will be supreme. Every member, regardless of position, will be accountable to the rules and values that define us. No member of this party, no matter how highly placed, will be bigger than the party, and no member no matter how lowly placed, will be ignored. This is my personal commitment to you all.

” In ADC, we shall return politics to its true purpose; to improve the lives of the people. This is the central ideology of our party: to make life better for the people. The resources of Nigeria will be deployed in the service of the majority of Nigerians. We will invest in our people, and make them more productive and more competitive. We will protect people and provide the environment for them to thrive.

” Let me therefore reiterate. No one elected or appointed on the platform of the ADC will have the discretion to decide what to do with power. Ours is a solemn commitment. To fly the banner of the ADC is to fly the banner of commitment to service. We will hold every elected and appointed officials of our party accountable. This party will insist that you deliver on the promises that we have made to the people. ”

Again former Vice president of Nigeria, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, appealed to Nigerians, and particularly members of the ADC, to make sure that “this time around, we really need to change the situation in the country.”

According to Atiku I remember when the APC was being formed, the entire political leadership in this country came to my house.
They said, “If you don’t come into the APC, this is not going to be possible.” They literally compelled me to join the APC. Only for us to enter the APC, our economy is gone, our sovereignty is gone, our security is gone, our education is gone, our infrastructure is gone. The healthcare is gone.

“Now, people like me, we must rise and make sure that there is change, genuine change, a serious change to rectify all these challenges that are happening in the country. I am in this game. We are going to win. Because of you, the young men and women, our children and our grandchildren, this country has been good to us.
And we don’t believe that this country is being good to the current generation, to the youth, to the women, and to the future of this country. That is why we are here today.

“You will see real change. Believe me, you cannot get away with corruption in the government of ADC. You cannot. You cannot get away with compromising with criminals and terrorists to make life impossible in this country. No. That is not what we intend to do. Absolutely not.

“Therefore, it is a struggle for all Nigerians. But I will not end these remarks without indicting the chairman of INEC and INEC itself, because it is clear, it is obvious, the evidence is there. Now, INEC is being used to undermine democracy in this country. Let the federal government know that we fought the military to bring democracy in this country, and we are going to fight them to bring democracy in this country.

“Let the chairman know we are not going to let him get away with his illegalities. We will not. And I hope we will have your support and cooperation to make sure we return to true democracy, to true development in all aspects of human endeavor.”

Also former governor of Sokoto state,Senator Waziri Tambuwal warned Judges not allow themselves to be used to destroy Nigeria by those in government today.

“Let no judge or justice allow himself to be used to destroy Nigeria. History is taking note of our roles as individuals. Our children and grandchildren are watching and looking up to us to serve this country.

“Those of you who are in privileged positions should be accountable and bear in mind that wherever you are writing your judgments or rulings, even if there is no individual by your side, God Almighty is watching over you.

“God Almighty will be the ultimate judge on the Day of Judgment. So be wary of those individuals who will be talking to you to influence you to undermine our judicial system, undermine our country, and undermine democracy.
The next set of people I will appeal to are those sitting here. When we started, it was not possible. They could not come together.”

The convention had adopted Senator David Mark as its National Chairman along with it National Executive Committee and expelled factional national chairman Nafiu Bala Gombe.

It also expelled a House of Representatives member, Leke Abejide, and others from the party due to anti-party activities

A motion for their expulsion was moved and passed by an overwhelming majority of delegates at the National Convention in Abuja.

Recall that Gombe has been in court claiming to be the authentic National Chairman of the party.

His actions led to the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, derecognizing the Senator David Mark-led ADC.

Uncertainty beclaouds ADC Convention today as FCT Authorities frustrate efforts to secure revenue …Party says efforts to rent private facility in FCT blocked -No official request to use government facilities-Wike

There are strong indications that the convention by African Democratic Congress (ADC) that scheduled to hold today may have been scuttled by authorities of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) following denial of venue for the exercise.

Daily Echoes Media gathered that all efforts by the party get permission for the use of Eagles Square or anyother government owned facilities failed as FCTA officials told the party officials that they were not allowed to release such facilities for use by the party.

Fielding questions from journalists in Abuja during his project inspection tour,Barrister Nyesom Wike refuted the allegation stressing that no official request had been made for the facilities.

The minister questioned the authenticity, stating that he had no knowledge of such an incident or even the party involved. He noted that if the allegation was linked to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), it could be part of a recurring strategy to attract public sympathy.

“Who denied them? I am not aware of any such development, and I don’t even know which party you are referring to. If it is the African Democratic Congress (ADC), such claims are their usual attempt to gain public sympathy,” Wike said.

The minister clarified that access to Eagle Square is governed by established procedures, which require interested parties to formally apply through the Abuja Investments Company Limited, the body responsible for managing the venue, alongside payment of stipulated fees.

He further explained that the Moshood Abiola National Stadium Velodrome does not fall under the jurisdiction of the FCT Administration but is controlled by the National Sports Commission.

Wike emphasized that compliance with due process guarantees access, citing previous usage by major political parties. According to him, both the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) had adhered to the required procedures when they used the respective venues.

“As we speak, no formal application has been submitted to the Abuja Investments Company Limited. When the APC used the venue and PDP used the Stadium Velodrome, they complied with the process. We do not deny anyone access if the rules are followed,” he added.

Meanwhile the party had after fruitless efforts to secure any government facilities for its Convention in FCT today, had to resort to searching for any available facility in the territory for its programme in order to meet the electoral guideline for political parties.
Daily Echoes Media further gathered that the party at last secured a venue for its Convention at Rainbow Event center at Area 8 Garki, in FCT, Abuja.

However, information reaching us revealed that even after paying for the use of Rainbow Event center at Area 8 Garki, in FCT, Abuja for the programme today, the owner of the facility got back to the leadership of ADC turning down the offer of letting the party use his facilities for fear of shutting down his business by the authorities of FCDA.

According to the party’s Publicity Secretary,Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi ,the party was told by the owner of the facility that he was under pressure to cancel the earlier arrangements to allow the party to use his facility for the Convention by FCDA and Minister of FCT,Barrister Nyesom Wike instructing him not to allow ADC use his facilities for its Convention.

Again Wike who spoke during an inspection tour of ongoing infrastructure projects across Abuja, expressed satisfaction with the pace and quality of work, revealing that critical road projects are on track for completion by May 15.

He disclosed that contractors have committed to meeting the deadline, while installation of streetlights across various locations would be concluded before the end of May.

At Gaduwa, the minister said he had ordered the installation of protective mesh along road corridors to prevent encroachment, adding that streetlight works in the area were progressing steadily.

Wike also announced plans to relocate informal sector operators, particularly traders from the Apo Mechanic Village, to a newly developed site in Wassa equipped with essential infrastructure.

He explained that the initiative is designed to enhance the working environment for artisans while fulfilling long-standing commitments made by the administration to support the informal sector.

Addressing concerns over the recent damage to the Kugbo Bus Terminal, Wike described the incident as a natural occurrence beyond human control.

He clarified that the terminal itself did not collapse, noting that only parts of the roofing sheets were affected by strong winds. According to him, repair works are already in progress and no casualties were recorded.

“The terminal did not collapse. The structure is intact. What happened was that strong winds blew off parts of the roof. Repairs are ongoing,” Wike said, noting that no lives were lost.

The minister attributed the consistent progress of projects within the FCT to strong collaboration between the government and contractors, supported by timely settlement of contractual payments.
