National Pilgrimage: Devotion to Our Lady of Mount Carmel is essential for our spiritual growth-Prof Ogunu

Ignatius Okorocha
National President, Secular Order of Discards Carmelite, Prof. Michael Ogunu has admonished devotees of the our Lady of Mount Carmel to remain steadfast stressing that devotion to our Lady of Mount Carmel  will accelerate our spiritual growth.

Speaking in an Interview with the Publisher of Daily Echoes at the end of a a three day National Pilgrimage on Our Lady of Mount Carmel at Tabor Carmelites Community in Nsukka in Enugu state recently,  Prof Ogunu said the Pilgrimage is of great spiritual benefit to the Catholics who have had the privilege of participating in it.

Prof Ogunu who is equally the International President of the World Apostolate of Fatima also gave insight into the importance of Scapular and those who wear it as sacramental in honour of the Blessed Virgin Mary and her son Jesus Christ.
“The Pilgrimage is of great spiritual benefit to the Catholics who have had the privilege of participating in it.
“From the talks  and the speeches that we have received at this event, our understanding of devotion to our lady of Mount Carmel will be very much broadened.
“It has also enriched our understanding of the Scapular and  the devotion to Our Lady of Mount. The two will serve  as  means of consecration to our lady of Mount Carmel and also as  sacramental. The two are very important.
“Therefore, participants at this Pilgrimage would gain lots of blessings  if they participate actively in the programme,” he noted.
On why most Catholics were not present at the Pilgrimage he said,” this  Pilgrimage we have to understand is not like a Pilgrimage to holy land or Pilgrimage organized by the universal church. It is essentially, a Carmelite Pilgrimage and it is for  the Carmelites who are able to attend the Pilgrimage that are here.
“The invitation is not to all  Catholics in the whole world, it was essentially to Carmelites of whatever category. And I know that many Secular Carmelite would have wished to be  here and members of the Confraternity of our Lady of Mount Carmel are not all here because of some personal reasons or obstacles such as illness, inability to travel from their places of residence and so on and so forth.”
On why the membership of the  Secular Carmelites (OCDS) is dwindling he said,” membership of OCDS is dwindling in many parts of the country even including my own community.
“I think there is need to discuss this matter with the Vicar of the Carmelite Order in Nigeria as well as with the Provincial Delegate who is the spiritual Adviser to the Secular Carmelite.
“I, as the National President of the Secular Order of Discards with some other members can have this discussion with the relevant priests so that some progress can be made,” he noted.
On the suggestion by the former Spiritual Assistant of Mother and Queen of Carmel Abuja, Rev Fr Clement Obiora (OCD) that the Order should lias with Catholic  Bishops on the need for canonical erection of Carmelites Order in their dioceses , he said such an idea is a good one, noting that the idea is very good adding that it will further enlighten most Catholics on the need to increase devotion to our blessed Virgin Mary.
Also another participant at the National Pilgrimage, President of Nsukka community of Secular Discards Carmelite (OCDS) Sr Benedicta Ugwuanyi(OCDS), said,” We  as a a host community feel delighted, we feel highly honoured that the programme is taking place in our community.
“We don’t need to travel like many other brethren that traveled long distances from Abuja, Benin, Lagos and other cities and states in Nigeria to be here.”
She expressed optimism that she believed that she would  be spiritually uplifted at the end of the programme, noting that the spiritual exercise will strengthen our relationship With God through our Mother Mary.
On the  possible reasons why most OCDS members were absent from the programme, she said,”the reason may be basically blamed on  the hardship in the country.
“My brother, things are hard, people find it difficult to feed, let alone finding means of traveling to Nsukka for this programme. I think that is the main reason why they are not here, “,he said.

Senate backs receivables financing Bill to boost MSMEs, unlock trade credit

The Senate on Wednesday concurred with the House of Representatives on the Factoring Assignment and Receivables Financing Bill, 2026, a measure aimed at expanding access to finance for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) and deepening domestic and international trade.

The Bill seeks to establish a legal and regulatory framework for debt factoring, a financing arrangement that allows businesses to convert unpaid invoices and credit sales into immediate cash.

Leading the debate, Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele said the legislation would create an enabling environment for alternative financing mechanisms and strengthen liquidity for businesses across the country.

According to him, the Bill provides a framework governing factoring contracts between sellers and financiers, while clearly defining the rights and obligations of all parties involved.

Bamidele said: “The Factoring Assignment and Receivable Financing Bill 2026 seeks to create a regulatory framework that would facilitate the development of debt factoring as an alternative means of financing for domestic and international trade in Nigeria and provide an enabling environment for it to thrive.”

He added: “The bill makes provisions for factoring contracts between the seller and the factor, sets out the relationship between the creditor and the factor, and defines their respective rights and obligations.”

The Senate Leader noted that the legislation had successfully passed through all legislative stages in the House of Representatives and had met all procedural requirements for Senate concurrence.

Supporting the bill, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Banking, Insurance and Other Financial Institutions, Senator Adetokunbo Abiru, described the measure as a major intervention for small businesses struggling with liquidity constraints.

Abiru explained that the proposed law would enable enterprises to convert credit sales into working capital without resorting to conventional loans.

He said: “In simple terms, what this bill seeks to do is provide a regulatory framework to support financing arrangements that will help most of our micro, small and medium enterprises convert their credit sales into immediate cash and provide liquidity and working capital.”

The Lagos East senator noted that factoring had become a major financing instrument across Africa, especially through the activities of the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank).

According to him, the African factoring market is currently worth more than $50 billion, but Nigeria accounts for less than one per cent of the market.

Abiru said: “The size of that market today is in excess of $50 billion, and Nigeria’s share is under one per cent.”

He added: “Countries like Egypt and Morocco have benefited largely from this, and passing this legislation will support our MSMEs in converting credit sales into cash without resorting to conventional borrowing arrangements.”

Following unanimous support from lawmakers, the bill was referred to the Committee of the Whole for clause-by-clause consideration after which it was passed.

The legislation is expected to improve access to finance, modernise commercial transactions and enhance Nigeria’s competitiveness in regional and global trade.

A fire outbreak in the Senate wing of the National Assembly was quickly contained on Wednesday, preventing it from spreading beyond the kitchen compartment of Hearing Room 107.

The incident occurred shortly after the Senate Committee on Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, concluded the screening of Dr. Zainab Marwa as the member representing the North East on the commission’s board.

It was gathered that the fire emanated from a microwave oven left on in the kitchen area which led to smoke from the fire to rapidly filled the hearing room, causing brief commotion among officials and journalists present.

Chairman of the Senate Committee on NDDC, Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong (Cross River South), and Senator Salihu Mustapha (Kwara Central) swiftly intervened to put out the fire before it could escalate.

The quick action of the two lawmakers ensured the fire was extinguished and normal activities resumed shortly after.

No injuries or significant damage to property were reported as at the time of filing this report.

Earlier during the screening, lawmakers expressed satisfaction with the response of Marwa to the questions put to her over the new role in the NDDC.

President Bola Tinubu had last week asked the Senate to confirm the nominee as a member of the Governing Board of the NDDC.

The Senate President Godswill Akpabio, who read the letter containing the request during plenary, referred it to the committee for legislative process and report back within two weeks

In a bid to tackle Ebola eradication in the country,President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the establishment of a Presidential Task Force on Ebola Virus Disease Preparedness and Emerging Public Health Threats and ordered the immediate release of N10 billion as emergency intervention funding.
The fund will strengthen the operational preparedness of the National Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) and support critical national public health emergency response activities.
The Presidential Task Force on Ebola will be chaired by the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, with membership drawn from relevant Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) and State representatives.
Ebola has recently resurfaced in the  Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Uganda, both neighbouring countries.
The President’s approval followed a stakeholder meeting convened under the chairmanship of the Chief of Staff to review Nigeria’s preparedness and develop strategies against the possible importation of Ebola into Nigeria.
Other critical stakeholders at the meeting included representatives from the Ministry of Interior, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), the Lagos State Government, and others.
President Tinubu also directed all States hosting international airports and international border corridors, as well as relevant MDAs, to submit their plans, funding requirements and intervention needs for consideration and coordinated implementation.
Additional measures to be put in place by the Task Force are: Intensification of passenger screening at all international airports, including enhanced temperature checks and crowd-control protocols; Enhanced monitoring of passengers arriving through high-risk airline routes including Air Uganda, Rwanda Air, Air Tanzania, Air Angola, Kenya Airways, and Ethiopian Airlines;  and Immediate activation of referral and isolation centres at Lagos and Abuja international airports, with other airports to follow.
Others include: Mandatory activation of QR code-based pre-arrival health declaration systems for passengers originating from or transiting through designated high-risk countries, and disinfection of departure halls, cargoes, baggage areas, and airport facilities as precautionary environmental measures.
The President mandated that the advisory group consult with security, diplomatic, and aviation bodies with a view to regulating flights from affected and designated high-risk countries.
In a statement signed by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on information and Strategy, the Task Force is further directed to designate specific airports or terminals for high-risk flights to enable controlled screening and isolation procedures, and to consider adjusting flight timings to minimise interaction between high-risk passengers and others.
