Name INEC Hqrs after Prof Humphrey Nwosu- Chief Chekwas Okorie

Professor Humphrey Nwosu,1st INEC National chairman
It is sad that the most visible unsung hero of the much celebrated June 12, 1993 presidential election in Nigeria is Professor Humphrey Nwosu, the National Chairman of the National Electoral Commission (NEC) which later became INEC.

Chief MKO Abiola casting his vote at Presidential election that gave him victory

Nigerians commended President Muhammadu Buhari for declaring June 12 as Democracy Day in the place of May 29. He also affirmed late Chief M.K.O Abiola, the winner of the June 12 presidential election, along with Alhaji Babagana Kingigbe as his running mate.
The two were accordingly honored with the requisite National Honors of GCFR and GCON, respectively.
Regrettably, no mention was made of Professor Humphrey Nwosu in the honors list for the historic June 12 election. Professor Nwosu had long before President Buhari honored the June 12 heros written his book where he gave account of the true outcome of the June 12, 1993, presidential election, including the figures scored by Chief MKO Abiola the presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party, SDP, and Alhaji Bashir Tofa, the presidential candidate of the National Republican Convention, NRC, showing Chief Abiola’s resounding victory in that election.
The undisputed fact is that there would be no June 12 celebration in Nigeria without Professor Humphrey Nwosu. He stuck out his neck in the face of obvious threats to his life by a military junta determined to scuttle the election and announced the actual election results.
This did not prevent General Ibrahim Babangida, the military President of Nigeria, from proceeding to annul the election.
After more than three decades, General Ibrahim Babangida publicly presented his memoir in which he vindicated Professor Humphrey Nwosu. He even boasted that it was under his watch that Nigeria had the fairest and freest presidential election.
Yet the architect of this unprecedented national feat remained unsung. The big question is, when will Nigeria have the good fortune to have the likes of Professor Humphrey Nwosu to preside over our Independent National Electoral Commission again?
President Muhammadu Buhari has done his own bit by giving Nigeria a more acceptable Democracy Day, which is June 12, and honored late MKO Abiola as former President and a posthumous award of the Grand Commander of the Federal Republic, GCFR.
The ball is now in the court of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to give Professor Nwosu a befitting National Honor.
Unfortunately, Professor Humphrey Nwosu died recently and his burial program has been announced by his family.
It is the expectation of Nigerians that President Tinubu should authorize a national burial for him. It will be to the credit of President Tinubu, the only true civilian to be elected President of Nigeria after President Shehu Shagari and Dr. Goodluck Jonathan to approve the National Headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to be named after PROFESSOR HUMPHREY NWOSU.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu should sieze the moment.

Former governor of Kaduna state, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai,

A chieftain of the Social Democratic Party, SDP, Nasir El-Rufai, on Monday visited the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, at his palace in Kano State

Addressing journalists after the visit, El-Rufai said Nigeria urgently requires a trustworthy political alternative to save the country.

The former governor explained that godfatherism and dysfunction had ruined both the All Progressives Congress, APC, and the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP

El-Rufai also disclosed that he had joined SDP to help create a credible political alternative free from godfatherism.

According to El-Rufai: “Kano is critical of any serious political formation because of its consistently high voter turnout. Kano is critical to any serious political formation because of its consistently high voter turnout. After joining the SDP, it was important to come and engage with stakeholders here.

“Twelve years ago, we merged three major parties to form the APC and defeated an incumbent president. But now, the goal is different. We are bringing together disaffected members across political divides under an existing platform, the SDP, which we believe has the best pedigree and potential.“We have seen how godfatherism destroyed the PDP and is now wreaking the APC. Nigerians deserve a party built on fairness, internal democracy, and equal opportunity; the SDP can be that alternative.”

Gov of Baylesa state, Douye Diri

By David Owei, Baylesa

The Bayelsa State Government has expressed dismay over the shooting incident during a political rally organised in the state on Saturday by the NEW Associates, a group allegedly loyal to the Federal Capital Territory Minister, Chief Nyesom Wike.

The state government in a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information, Orientation and Strategy, Mrs. Obiuwou Koku-Obiyai, on Saturday night called on the Inspector-General of Police and the police authorities in the state to unravel those behind the incident at the rally ground.

IGP Kayode E

The government expressed concern that the shooting was not a coincidence as the organisers had earlier threatened that “the good, the bad and the ugly” would attend the event.

It wondered why a gathering that was expected to be peaceful turned violent with some persons reportedly injured.

The statement urged the police to immediately commence investigation in order to bring to book anyone found culpable.

While noting that the event negated guidelines for political activities as stipulated in the Electoral Act and by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the government observed that it was held on the camp ground of a religious organisation.

It warned political groups in the state not to drag religious organisations into their partisan activities that desecrate sacred places of worship.

It further stated that it would not hesitate to sanction any religious organisation that breach the law.

The government restated its commitment to sustaining the peace in the state as well as ensuring the security of lives and property of all residents.

Despite Gunmen Attack, Supporters Throng Pro-Wike Mega Rally in Bayelsa

FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike

By David Owei ,Baylesa

Supporters of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, defied an armed attack by persons suspected to be sponsored political thugs, who fired gunshots into the crowd during a pro-Wike rally in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State to scare invited guests and party faithfuls.

The ceremony was intended to inaugurate the New Associates group at the Church of God Mission Camp at Igbogene, Yenagoa, was briefly disrupted as security operatives and the armed thugs exchange gunshots which led many scappered for safety.

The rally organized in appreciation of President Bola Tinubu for appointing sons and daughters of the state into positions of government, and to declare support for Wike, who is the grand patron of the group, later commenced after security operatives managed to secure the venue.

The supporters of NEW Associates who had thronged the Church of God Mission Camp arena as early as 8am, were already seated when the gunmen emerged from the nearby creeks and bush shooting sporadically.

The supporters however ran for their lives while the combined security personnel from the Nigeria Police Force, Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC) and DSS engaged the hoodlums to retreat.

Speaking shortly after the incident, the Secretary of NEW Associates and former spokesman of Ijaw Youths Council (IYC), Comrade Ebilade Ekerefe, accused the state government of trying to disrupt their peaceful rally, vowing to continue with the rally.

He said they put up the peaceful rally to appreciate President Bola Tinubu for appointing sons and daughters of the state in positions of responsibilities in his government, wondering why somebody should feel threatened with a peaceful rally.

He said: “How will somebody go after the law abiding citizens of Nigeria, particularly Ijaw youths, who have gathered to associate politically, we are not here to cause any trouble, we are here to express our supports, solidarity to the President and Commander-in-Chief.”

Also, the immediate past Commissioner of Health in Bayelsa State, Dr Pabara Igwele, said the rally is a peaceful one, that anybody trying to cause panic is doing so for political reason.

However, after the inauguration, the Convener, Barr George Turnah, MON, said apart from the inauguration of the Bayelsa State chapter of the New Associates, it was an opportunity to appreciate the renewed hope president Bola Tinubu led government and applauded him for the appointments he gave to distinguished sons and daughters of Niger Delta region into position of trusts.

They include, chief Nyeson Wike, FCT Minister, Dr Heneiken Lokpobiri, Minister Petroleum resources , oil, Dr Samuel Ogbuku , MD of Niger Delta Development Commission ,Mr Ebitimi Amgbare MD,Niger Delta Basin Development Authority and Mrs Didi Walson Jack , Head of service to the Federation.
