The National Sports Commission (NSC) has endorsed the 60th anniversary and Sports Icon Awards of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) scheduled to hold in Abuja from Oct. 29 to Oct. 31, 2025.

Mallam Shehu Dikko, Chairman of the NSC gave his approval for the Diamond Jubilee event when the National Executive Committee (NEC) of Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) and Local Organising Committee (LOC) of SWAN@60 visited as part of stakeholders’ engagement ahead of the ceremony.

A Statement by the SWAN @60 Media and Publicity Committee says Bukola Olopade, Director-General of NSC received the SWAN delegation led by Isaiah Benjamin, Ikenna Okonkwo and Ben Ogbemudia, President, Secretary General and Chairman of the LOC respectively at the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja.

Olapade who spoke on behalf of Dikko commended SWAN for its professionalism, visionary leadership, and commitment to sports development and administration in Nigeria through responsible journalism.

The administrator said sports writers were crucial to lending credibility to activities in the sports sector at a time when falsehood and distrust had become the order of the day.

Olapade who was presented with an award for his contributions said there was need for continued collaboration between the NSC, sports federations, and the media to promote grassroots and elite sports.

He said the ongoing partnership with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) led by Alhaji Ibrahim Gusau was an example of synergy for national progress.

The DG reiterated the Commission’s support, continued collaboration and partnership with SWAN to promote sports journalism and development adding that the award was a testament to credibility of what the NSC was doing.

Addressing the President, Olapade said, from the first time we met, I saw your visionary attitude, every one of our conversations has always been about your members’ interest.

“That has been the foundation of the image you and the General Secretary have shown.

“I must commend the professionalism of SWAN members in the reportage and management of pre-election activities within the sports community.

“I also acknowledge your role in sustaining public trust and protecting the reputation of sports administrators.

“In the past, the public space would have been filled with confusion and complaints, but you have handled information with maturity and responsibility. I sincerely appreciate that.

“I want to assure you that there is nothing you need from us that you will not get,” he said.

Olopade dedicated the award to Chairman Dikko and the entire Commission noting that their collective leadership and teamwork had greatly advanced sports development across the country.

Earlier in his remarks, the President of SWAN, Benjamin, commended the National Sports Commission for its efforts in ensuring sports development in the country.

Benjamin used the opportunity to officially invite the NSC leadership to the SWAN 60th anniversary celebration and award ceremony scheduled to hold in Abuja, the nation’s capital territory.

Other members of the delegation were Ijeoma Peter-Nwante the Financial Secretary, and Friday Joshua, member a the LOC and Assistant Secretary, SWAN FCT, Chapter.

The Ogbia Brotherhood Youth Council (OBYC) Worldwide has condemned the planned protest over the legal dispute involving Azikel Group President, Dr. Azibapu Godbless Eruani, CFR, and Mr. Kariyai Daukoru, describing the action as unnecessary while the matter remains before a competent court.

OBYC, in a statement issued on Saturday and made available to newsmen, urged Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) Central Zone Chairman, Comrade Peres Ineife, to suspend the proposed protest and allow the judicial process to run its course.

It also appealed to the newly elected IYC Worldwide President, Dr. Doubra Collins Okotete, to promote dialogue and reconciliation among the parties involved in the Aviation Training initiative.

OBYC maintained that Dr. Eruani’s aviation training initiative was a philanthropic programme designed to empower Bayelsa youths and rejected allegations that he intended to victimise anyone.

The Council further called on Ijaw youths, political leaders and stakeholders to exercise restraint, respect the rule of law, and avoid actions capable of undermining the judiciary or disrupting peace.

Two Fishermen Feared Dead ln Bayelsa Ocean

Gov Douye Diri of Bayelsa State

By David Owei,Bayelsa

Two fishermen have been declared missing after their boat capsized off the coast of Opu-Okumbiri in Brass Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.

It was gathered that the missing fishermen were identified as Elder Sunday Sample Timothy and his assistant, Mr. Avarada.

According to a source, Chief Saturday Akimi-Omunhuo, a community leader, the two men left for a fishing expedition at about 1:00 a.m. on Friday when the outboard engine of their fishing boat reportedly developed a fault while they were far out at sea.

Chief Akimi-Omunhuo said a rescue boat towed the disabled vessel toward the continental shelf and the Atlantic coastline. However, as they approached the shore, strong waves reportedly capsized the faulty boat, throwing the two fishermen into the water.

He narrated that the rescue boat and those aboard reached the shore safely, but the two fishermen have remained missing.

Community members were said to immediately launch a search operation along the coastline and surrounding waters. The search team later recovered the fishermen’s fishing gear, but there was no sign of the missing men as of the time of filing this report.

Chief Akimi-Omunhuo described the incident as tragic, noting that similar accidents have occurred over the years in the coastal communities.

He appealed to the Brass Local Government Council, the Bayelsa State Government, the Federal Government and relevant stakeholders to provide improved safety equipment, weather monitoring systems and other support for fishing communities whose livelihoods depend on the sea.

“Our people depend on fishing for survival. We need better safety measures to reduce the loss of lives on our waterways,” he said.

Search efforts for the two missing fishermen were still ongoing at the time of this report.

Authorities were yet to issue an official statement on the incident.
