2027: APC Clears 72 For Assembly Primaries In Bayelsa…As Aspirants Jostle For 24 Tickets
By David Owei, Bayelsa
The Bayelsa State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has cleared 72 out of a total 76 aspirants who procured and submitted nomination forms to contest for its primary elections.
Inside source disclosed to that the reason for denying others clearance was due to alleged refusal to sign an agreement on ‘voluntary withdrawal’ from the race which is seen by some of the aspirants as tactics to chicken them out of the race.
Our reporter who has been monitoring developments in the State reports that already the purchase/submission of expression of interest/nomination forms have since ended.
The eight local government areas of Bayelsa is delineated into 24 State Constituencies.
Meanwhile, shortly after the close of sale/submission of nomination forms, a second round of screening exercise was carried out by the party’s national Secretariat for the aspirants with names of cleared aspirants now shortlisted, signalling the end of the screening exercise.
Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Abraham Ingobere, is said to be eyeing a return to the House unopposed by other aspirants from the party in his Brass Constituency three seat.
Speaking earlier, Chairman of the screening committee for the Assembly aspirants, Engr Iboro Ekanem described the exercise as peaceful and transparent.
He noted that his committee work was just to screen the aspirants who have submitted their nomination forms, promising to execute its functions meticulously to prevent litigations which may come thereafter.
In their separate remarks, former Chairman of Ogbia local government area, Chief Ebiango Egain, an aspirant for the Ogbia Constituency one Assembly seat expressed the optimism that he would win the primaries.
He emphasized his readiness to synergize with stakeholders across his constituency and the State to work towards a more impactful leadership if elected in the 2027 polls.
Egain noted that it was time those who have made impacts and are popular across party lines get elected into the state legislature.
“You can’t stop the rain from falling. You can see the mammoth crowed which has accompanied me just to submit my nomination form. Imagine what will happen during the elections.Victory is sure. It’s time to elect those who have made impacts in peoples lives into the Bayelsa State House of Assembly. Ogbia constituency one can’t be left out this time”, he said.
Also speaking, Engr. Tonbara Inegbegha, aspirant for the Southern Ijaw constituency one, promised to continue touching lives of his constituents if he emerges as candidate in the primaries and eventually wins in the general elections.
He charged youths to take up political leadership, saying older folks should leave the House of Assembly seats for much younger and vibrant youth, just as he described the forthcoming APC primaries as decision making time for youths across the state.
“Older folks should leave the House of Assembly seats for youths. The State Assembly, for me is the beginning of leadership for youths to learn the political landscape. Our youths are vibrant and productive. And if elected I’ll bring this to bear in my tenure as an assembly member”, he said.
Reacting to functions of the screening committee and those in charge of the of the nomination forms, some aspirants for Ogbia constituency three expressed their desires to continue reaching out to their constituents and stakeholders to micro-zone the assembly seat to their ward.
Ogbia Constituency three comprises 12 communities which are delineated into four wards, including Kolo one-three and Amorokeni, ward 9, Imiringi and Elebele, ward 8, Emeyal one and Emeyal 2, ward 7, and Otuasega, Yiba-Ama(Oruma), Ibelebiri and Otuegwe two, ward six
Our correspondents further gathered that Ogbia Constituency three parades a total of five aspirants, including Dr Peter Isu, Dr(Barr.) Michael Priesthood, Gabriel Ogbara, Monday Eribo and Champion ThankGod Obom.
“Ward nine of the Ogbia constituency three has for too long been marginalized. Considering the number of tenures sister wards have produced assembly members for the constituency it would be politically correct for stakeholders to give ward nine the privilege to produce the next assembly member come, 2027”, Dr Isu said.
The assembly hopefuls contended that they have the requisite support base to win the general elections for the party, promising to conduct themselves according to the expectations of constituents if elected.
Interestingly, serving members of the House stagging return to the assembly have continued to remain silent without speaking with the media, a situation observers predicted may be unconnected to the alleged exclusion of some of them from participating in the forthcoming primaries due to zoning arrangements in their constituencies and other yet to identify social expediencies

Diri Laments Oil Production Effects, Inaugurates 18-Member C’ttee For Cancer Treatment Centre
By David Wei,Bayelsa
Governor of Bayelsa State, Senator Douye Diri, has described as unfair and unacceptable the situation whereby communities in the state which bear the cost of the nation’s wealth are left without the care they need to remain healthy and productive.
Governor Diri stated this at the weekend while inaugurating an 18-member steering committee for the establishment of the Bayelsa Cancer Treatment and Research Centre at Government House, Yenagoa.
Represented by his Deputy, Dr. Peter Akpe, the Bayelsa helmsman noted that cancer “is no longer a distant disease in communities around the state, due to decades of oil pollution with serious long-term health consequences on the people.”
According to him, breast, cervical and prostate cancers have become quite rampant among the populace, resulting in deaths even among young people in their most productive years, thus necessitating the establishment of the centre.
His words: “Let me begin with the plain truth: Cancer is no longer a distant disease in our communities. Almost every family in this hall has a story: a mother diagnosed too late; a brother who traveled to Lagos, Abuja or abroad and spent everything they owned on treatment.
“Breast, cervical and prostate cancers in particular are taking our people in their most productive years. Too many of these deaths are not because the disease cannot be treated, but because treatment was too far away, too expensive, or came too late.
“In Bayelsa, we carry an additional burden. Decades of oil pollution have left their mark on our land, our water, and we fear, on the health of our people. The Bayelsa State Oil and Environmental Commission Report of 2023 raised serious concerns about the long-term health consequences of that exposure.
“We will not accept a situation where our communities bear the cost of the nation’s wealth and are then left without the care they need. Therefore, a cancer treatment centre in Bayelsa State is not a luxury; it is a matter of health justice.”
Highlighting the terms of reference for the committee, Governor Diri charged the chairman and members to make an empirical assessment of the cancer burden in the state, as well as recommend the most suitable location for the centre, equipment, infrastructure, partnerships and financing options, amongst others.
He also charged them to plan for the requisite and competent manpower, maintenance, training, accessibility to the facility and steady supply of drugs and consumables, noting that they were chosen on account of their competence and years of experience.
In his acceptance speech on behalf of the steering committee, the Chairman and Commissioner for Health, Prof. Seiyefa Brisibe, expressed gratitude to the governor for finding them worthy to work for the establishment of a world-class cancer centre in Bayelsa.
Prof. Brisibe, noted that setting up of the committee underscores the unwavering commitment and seriousness the Douye Diri Administration attaches to the health and well-being of the people of the state.
He said the burden of cancer in the state is a reality with huge economic and health burden on families and could no longer be managed with half measures, which informed the careful selection of members with the required expertise.
According to him: “First of all, let me appreciate, with deepest gratitude, on behalf of the members of this steering committee, His Excellency the Governor of Bayelsa State, Senator Douye Diri, for his unwavering commitment to the health and well-being of all Bayelsans.
“It is visionary leadership and decisive mandate that have brought us to this inauguration today. The burden of cancer on communities is a reality that we can no longer afford to manage with half measures.
“Families in Bayelsa endure the excruciating financial, physical and emotional toll of travelling outside the state and often outside the country, just to access basic diagnostic and therapeutic cancer care. This will end with the mandate for the work we are about to begin.”
Members of the steering committee include Dr. Jones Stow, Prof. Jumbo Johnbull, Dr. Boboye Ifie, Dr. Oluwadare Marcus and Dr. James Omietimi.
Others are Dr. Ebikapaye Okoyen, Dr. Ngowari Torunana, Mrs. Beatrice Olomiete, Hon. Kingsley Kuku, Dr. Ibimonye Porbeni and Mr. Nimifagha Esindu.
Also to serve on the committee are Prof. Kelvin Kiridi, Dr. Timipa Peregha-West, Magdalene Alabinte, Prof. Beleudanyo Fente, Dr. Elizabeth Obiorah and Dr. Embeleakpo Apere.
