*ASUP BYSPOLY Issues 14-Day Ultimatum Over Illegal Reappointment of Retired Rector*

The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP), Bayelsa State Polytechnic Aleibiri Chapter, has issued a 14-day ultimatum to the Governing Council of the institution to reverse the purported reappointment of the retired former Rector, Dr. Wisdom Clinton Soreh.

In a letter dated 23rd July 2026 and signed by the Chapter Chairman, Dr. Oyin-Emi Frank Ogbomah, and the Chapter General Secretary, Comrade Tonprebofa Andrew Nemine, the Union stated that the ultimatum takes effect from Friday, 24th July 2026.

According to the Union, the former Rector retired from active service in February 2024 and his tenure as Rector officially ended on 19th June 2026. Following the expiration of his tenure, the Governing Council appointed Dr. (Mrs.) Yaguo Eremasi Ikele as Acting Rector for a period of six months, and the former Rector handed over to her on 24th June 2026.

The Union expressed shock that the Governing Council later purportedly reappointed the retired former Rector as substantive Rector with the appointment backdated to 22nd June 2026, an action deliberately intended to cause chaos in the institution and ridicule the prosperity government that’s known for due process.

ASUP described the action as a clear violation of the NBTE Revised Conditions of Service for Polytechnics and the Establishment Law of the Bayelsa State Polytechnic. The Union decried the usurpation of the powers of the Governor and maintained that the Governing Council has no legal power to appoint a Rector but can only recommend qualified candidates to the Visitor of the Polytechnic, His Excellency Senator Douye Diri for appointment after the vacant position has been advertised and interview conducted.

The Union further stated that the appointment of a retiree as Rector is to undermine all serving Chief Lecturers in the Polytechnic and similar institutions in the State. It noted that the Polytechnic, which has been peaceful since its establishment, is now facing a serious industrial crisis due to the compromised posture of the Governing Council .

The Union therefore demands the immediate reversal of the purported reappointment of the retired former Rector and the commencement of due process for the appointment of a substantive Rector.

The Union warned that failure to comply within the 14-day period would force the academic staff in the Polytechnic to embark on peaceful protest followed by an indefinite strike.

Nigeria’s Ambassador to Qatar, Mahmood Yakubu, held high-level diplomatic meetings in Doha on Sunday aimed at creating employment opportunities for Nigerians and deepening energy cooperation.

Ambassador Yakubu was received in audience by Qatari Minister of Labour Ali bin Saeed bin Samikh Al Marri, where discussions focused on opening up more job prospects for Nigerian nationals. The envoy noted that the initiative aligns with the “4D Doctrine” of Nigeria’s foreign policy, which prioritises active diaspora engagement.

On the same day, the ambassador hosted a delegation from the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF), led by its Secretary-General, Dr Philip Mshelbila, a Nigerian national. The organisation is headquartered in Doha, with Nigeria’s Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo, currently serving as Chairman of its ministerial meetings.

The Ogbia Brotherhood Youth Council (OBYC) Worldwide has condemned the planned protest over the legal dispute involving Azikel Group President, Dr. Azibapu Godbless Eruani, CFR, and Mr. Kariyai Daukoru, describing the action as unnecessary while the matter remains before a competent court.

OBYC, in a statement issued on Saturday and made available to newsmen, urged Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) Central Zone Chairman, Comrade Peres Ineife, to suspend the proposed protest and allow the judicial process to run its course.

It also appealed to the newly elected IYC Worldwide President, Dr. Doubra Collins Okotete, to promote dialogue and reconciliation among the parties involved in the Aviation Training initiative.

OBYC maintained that Dr. Eruani’s aviation training initiative was a philanthropic programme designed to empower Bayelsa youths and rejected allegations that he intended to victimise anyone.

The Council further called on Ijaw youths, political leaders and stakeholders to exercise restraint, respect the rule of law, and avoid actions capable of undermining the judiciary or disrupting peace.
